Is it just me or do the umpires this season seem to be far more relaxed on giving away 50m penalties.

- Umps seem to be calling the players on the mark back, if they have over stepped. In some cases they are calling the players back 3 or 4 times, this used to be far far more strict IMO.

- holding the man after a mark for a free kick is being let go after it being a big issues a few seasons ago.

I don't mind the more relaxed interpretation just something I have noticed this season.

I think they've erred in not clamping down more at the start of the year and with 50m penalties paid in the back half.

When a forward take a contested or under pressure mark 30m out from goal I don't want to see a 50m penalty because a defender makes them earn it as the old saying goes. Not when the defender is in the contest and isn't taking a cheap shot.

But cribbing the mark and holding players after they've marked just slows down ball movement and delays the game. Just like good soccer refs can keep control of games by issuing smart early fouls, warnings and when needed yellow cards I think good AFL umpiring is to set a standard early in games and early in the season. The 50m penalties suck when they go against you but clamping down causes players to modify their behaviour.

In fact the first goal tonight to Hawthorn was caused from Douglas turning the ball over when Hale was 2 or 3m over the mark. The umpire had started to call Hale back but then called play on and his pressure affected the kick and caused a turnover.

The umpires are calling play on very very quickly this year sometimes when a player with the ball does nothing more than pivot and look in board from the mark, yet aren't protecting the player who's won the ball by enforcing the rules. I'd much rather the man on the mark be punished than the player who's actually got the ball.

Obviously have a short memory or don't watch enough games, there have been games and even weeks where they have been extremely strict on creeping over the mark/entering restricted space.
I really haven't seen much for holding/late contact or creeping the mark but you're right about the entering restricted space one and that's not one I agree with because it's become comical at times where a player runs innocently by, the player with the ball isn't bother in the slightest and the umpire finds a 50m.

Yep, depends on the day. The 50s we received against us for encroaching the mark against GWS were savage.

I wonder if part of the issue is that a 50m penalty can be so costly on the scoreboard if it's awarded anywhere forward of the centre circle. Maybe if they awarded 25m instead for mark infringements it might see them more tightly policed and paid more often.

Leave the 50m for the serious infringements.

The umps need to clamp down on players encroaching the mark. There are certain teams that frequently exploit the leniency. It slows down the ability of the player with the ball to kick and gives the opposition time to get players back.

Crows vs Saints the other week I think there were atleast eight 50m penalties paid and most of them were annoyingly soft...

Last night Crows had a mark in the defensive 50 and you could hear the ump say atleast 4 times "..*forgot player*, back 2 metres... back two metres... back two metres....' while the player on the mark was looking at him and no moving an inch... then the Crows player kicks the ball so ump just says 'play on'..

It's the inconsistency that's annoying.. many of the 50s payed in the Crows v Saints game the players were given no warnings at all to step back, but last night they were giving 3 or 4 warnings and nothing got paid...

The hawks in particular will test the umpire out. if he lets them get away with it early, they will go over the mark and go into space every single time. Took them awhile to cotton on against GWS that the umps had obviously been instructed to watch it

The one thing I hate is when the defending team changes who the player on the mark is.

More often than not the player who shifts onto being on the mark comes from in front of the mark to do so (not directly in front but diagonally in front), which prevents the ability for the player who took the mark to play on. Just because they're moving diagonally backwards onto the mark, doesn't mean that they weren't in front of the mark and preventing the player from playing on. The thing is, they hardly every pay 50 for it.

The players know where the mark is and deliberately try to encroach it. All clubs do this. This two meters, three meters BS is stalling and the players push those limits every game knowing they will just told to come back onto the mark that they already knew the location of.

Get more strict and make the players accountable for marking up in the correct location.

Correct itsba stalling tactic but 50m is too harsh the umps cant possibly five 50m twenty times a game but 15m?? Thyd call all the BS THESE TACTICS try.

I think they became 50m penalties because the original 15m penalties weren't considered a harsh enough detterent for teams to delibrately hold up play. Drag a player down after marking, sure, give them 15 metres, but that's plenty of time to get defensive structures ready and not much of a territory loss - 50 metres was intentially harsh to stop it happening

Well last night they only didn't pull Sloane back, they allowed him to advance over and call play on to Hodge who had the ball.

Ump "Come back Rory"

Rory walks further forward towards Hodge

Ump "Play on"

Yet then the umpires will go and penalize on a hair trigger the guy on the mark for moving diagonally in the direction the player with the ball is moving.

Stand over the mark, get warned 4 times to move back and actually hold up the play, no penalty. Move diagonally on the mark when the play is already moving and you get penalized. AFL game relevant officiating at its finest.
