Pretty sure it's confirmed that Sydney offered pick 9 & their 2020 first rounder (imo likely to be a high pick around 5-8).
Assuming Essendon finish in the lower parts of the top 8 the comp pick would be around 11-15.

So the Sydney offer was significantly better than the potential FA compo.

Sydney wanted 1 of our 2nds back in that trade as well.

Hard to believe people are still spewing about the trade/non trade. Get over it, fair dinkum.

Nobody knows if it was a good or bad move until about 10 months from now. Speculation until then is pointless.

While the first part is true, what's done is done, time to move on.

But considering it is one part of a larger conversation about our trading and recruitment team, if we knew his fate was still very speculative, it's fair that people question whether pragmatism played a significant enough part of our decision making and is certainly a talking point going forward as 1 item of evidence.

His groin is more speculative.

Sure but the club think they can fix him, Sydney also think he's fixable, I just think he's worth that risk.

Sure we may lose him for less but at least we'd have had 12 months to plan, also 12 months into Harry Jones and another 12 in Gown.

And 12 months less into 2 midfielders to kick it to them.

I'm with the club on this one, Losing joe for 2 speculative picks is silly and not worth it.

The irony - People post that draft picks are over-rated YET bitch and moan that PLAYER X must GET two top 5 picks or similar - Finally, some on this board would never go to the draft because everything is speculation.

There is a difference between going to the draft and trading your better players for picks to go to the draft, Had we lost Joe and Fantasia for some good picks then maybe if we were lucky we'd draft 1 player as good as them.

I'm happy with the club backing themselves with this call, Not sure if it was a mistake... won't for a few months yet.

Where's the irony? If draft picks are inherently speculative then of course you want the best ones you can get your hands on.

Can we start a post non trade thread by any chance. I'm only interested in anything current
Until he re-signs or requests another trade, this will be the reality unfortunately. Splitting the thread would just end up with two threads meandering between the non-trade and whatever he's doing currently.

You could just not open the thread unless the thread title changes, as that would typically indicate something important happened, although once the season starts it'll probably sink off the first page anyway. Nothing good ever happens in pre-season :p

Logically if draft picks are over-rated and speculative, then you don't stress about received draft picks for player X, as long as its within the normal range for that player.

This. Should have taken whatever we could get for Joe. He wanted out, now it seems hes just going to play a handful of games for us in 2020 and we will just get him fit for Sydney and get nothing in return. WTF Dodoro...!!!
Yes, giving ourselves 12 months to change his mind when he's a RESTRICTED free agent (ergo, we can match any bid and force a trade) and force Sydney into a trade.

How stupid is that?

Was mostly tongue and cheek. Just kinda feel like any worthwhile debate over the non trade might have run its course. Yes please update the title if anyone posts a remotely interesting comment thanks
