Is he the best second ruck in the game at the moment?

Remember that time people on here were making threats if he were forced to shoulder some ruck responsibility?
Yeh, nuh. Me neither

Nominated for Mark of the Year, vote for him here: https://markoftheyear.afl/vote/round/8

His pack mark in the third quarter not only triggered a large roar around the stadium, it also led to his nomination for the AFL Mark of the Year award.

Entrants go into the running to win one of two official AFL Sherrin footys each week and the major cash prize of $5000 at the end of the 2017 AFL home and away season.

mustn't have been too many hangers taken this round for that one to get nominated tbh
Last year he had an amazing mark that would've been Mark of the Year any other year, but bloody Majak Daw managed to outshine him in the same round, didn't even get the weekly media cycle -.- :p I guess this is swings and roundabouts.

I feel like Joe could do worse than take a look a Buddy's goal kicking routine with the curved run up. Seems to have a similar kicking action in the run to Buddy but in his set shots runs dead straight.
Last year most of his misses we're to the right with big hooks. This season the ball is going straighter off the boot but his high ball drop leaves too much margin for error resulting in him pushing either side. He also on occasions lay back too much instead of having full momentum through the kick.

Skipworth says he has a strict set of parameters he follows when choosing which kick to take and explains them. This makes me confused.
Over the last 3 games Joe has taken a number of set shots outside of 45 degree, within 35 metres from goal where he has opted for a standard drop punt. He missed at least 3 against Melbourne and 1 against Freo when by his own set rules he should have gone around his body. Skippy says this is in place he know what is best suited for every situation and he has gone at 80% conversion around the body.

Why then has he gone away from this, without his kicking coach even being aware of it. Am I missing something?

It's a good question. Curious if these parameters are a really recent thing or if he's misjudging where he is on the field, or just overriding the parameters as he sees fit. Generally his judgment and leadership seem to be praised, so I find the last possibility odd, but also kinda likely.

has kicked 55 goals in his last 22 games. Hasnt been kept goalless once.
Testament to the talent of the bloke, imagine if he was kicking straight?
Still quite a large portion of the general footy public that believe he is overated, that being said the general footy public tend to regurgitiate whatever footy related headlines they read that week, and as we know Joey seems to attract a lot of negative attention.

As a general rule, the 'experts' on television and radio, as well as the BF hive-mind, is usually a good 12 to 24 months behind when it comes to players taking the next step. This time next year it will suddenly dawn on a lot of posters that Daniher is pretty damn good.

It is a similar scenario to when Buddy was really struggling in front of goal. Joe demands so much of the ball that you know weight of numbers will eventually see him shine. Two seasons ago he struggled body on body and in contested marking, now he is elite. Fingers crossed his goal kicking will improve at a similar level.

Over and under rated are the biggest bullshit terms ever. How exactly do you work out what his rating is and then whether his performance is over or under that mark? Not sure why people get caught up on this?

Not really. I think you'd find it hard to argue against the fact that it's only recently Zach Merrett has become not underrated. He was playing at a level that belied public opinion for quite a while. It's hugely commonplace that public appreciation and understanding lags behind performance
