Firstly, he’s a A-grader. He’s a very, very good player. He’s a reigning All Australian forward five games into his next season.

Yes he’s not playing like it at this very minute, but you don’t drop your absolute stars after a few games in a form slump, because they’re good enough to play themselves back into form at senior level, and can do it very quickly.

Secondly, as a gun forward he continues to provide headaches for the opposition. I guarantee you their best defender will continue to go to him every week. If we drop him and bring in - I don’t even know who - then what? That defender goes to Stewart and affects his output?

Thirdly, he’s a forward. He’s not in form but AFL footy is won and lost so comprehensively in the middle. Defenders and forwards have a very tough time when you’re getting beaten in there.... it’d be hard for any forward to look good for us in a game like yesterday. That makes him look worse than he’s actually going.

He’s not getting dropped, it’s a stupid suggestion.
Great post. There’s making a statement and then there’s shooting oneself in the foot. Dropping him would be the latter.

I wouldn't drop him

but something seems amiss - playing again 4 days later might blow a gasket

hope if there's a niggle they err on the right side of the ledger

I think we should be looking at things bigger than "Take it one week at a time!".
Dropping Daniher would send a clear message through the group and draw a line in the sand of what is acceptable behavior on and off the field. If Daniher isn't dropped or at least 5 changes for Sunday then this season is over and we have wasted another 12 months. I'm really disappointed with the club, for me the team has dropped away since a few key players and staff signed new contracts in the last 12 months.

but then it just becomes optics and semantics doesn't it?

he's not playing.. why?

do we have to make a grand statement that he hasn't been dropped but has been rested?
It’s not hard. If he’s fit enough, he plays. If he genuinely needs a rest and isn’t right physically, then rest him.

But this idea that dropping him to make some grand statement and fix everything is flawed on a lot of levels.

agreed, i'm not dropping him to make a statement, that's for sure

id prefer we make a statement by winning a game of football

There is that, but you also don’t drop your best players on the back of just a few weeks of bad form. And he wasn’t even that bad against Port anyway, and I think how bad he was yesterday is being overstated too.

Being a forward in that side at the moment would be hard work

If they’re going to go down the statement route, I can think of many more worthy candidates.

hes just set the bar very high for himself

only the best have that problem - anything less is considered a failure of a game.

2 big issues for me are his goal kicking and his reliance on calling for the ball deep in the forward line, starting behind his opponent and hoping to take a screamer over his opponents shoulders.

There are others parts of his game that he has been doing ok this year. If he can start to correct those 2 issues he will be ok.

The beauty this week is that he only has to wait 4 days to redeem himself.

I can’t imagine he’d be too fatigued after yesterday’s minimal output.
man he was spent from over action!

how many times did you see him dive to make a tackle and stay down? don't think it was cause he was squibbing, I genuinely thick he was spent

Can’t agree. He doesn’t work hard enough in f50, prefers to stand flat footed & play from behind rather than leading up/doubling back to create options for his ball carriers.

It’s mindset with Joe at the moment. He needs to listen to instruction & keep his concentration up at all times. Seems to think his height & ability will get it done for him, when it couldnt be further from the truth atm.

I agree on the type of his movement being flawed - but I don't think he lacks effort, I think the effort is just poorly placed.

id guess right now his legs would be jelly - not because he chose to stand behind the pack and call for the ball over the top, but because he actually ran tirelessly. Just not to the places we needed

Towards the end it seemed every action he made was last ditch - like diving at do or die tackles that had him left sprawled on the ground instead of being able to get up and keep chasing. This to me looked like a bloke who wanted to keep going harder but had fumes left in the tank. Not a bloke just squibbing out of laziness.

Apart from a good performance last year, he only averages 1-2 goals a game. For a guy of his potential, and his importance to our structure, it is very disappointing. He is a great mark and very agile but his kick for goal continues to let him down. If not fixed he could he the biggest wasted opportunity this club has ever seen.
