Just had a look at his stats - he's only had 8 tackles this year. This surprised me given he puts on his fair share of defensive pressure, but he obviously doesn't get in a position to tackle. It's even more surprising given he has time in the ruck every week where the contest is at his feet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic with his performance this season but this stat took me completely by surprise.
I reckon his work rate shows in other areas of the game - looking at some of the tall Coleman contenders...

Tackles:
Tom Hawkins - 30 (!)
Jack Reiwoldt - 25
Buddy Franklin - 24
Jeremy Cameron - 19
Josh Kennedy - 15
Tex Walker - 11
Ben Brown - 11
Tom Lynch - 10 (GCS)
Joe Daniher - 8

Hit Outs:
Tom Hawkins - 0
Jack Reiwoldt - 4
Buddy Franklin - 2
Jeremy Cameron - 0
Josh Kennedy - 5
Tex Walker - 0
Ben Brown - 19
Tom Lynch (GCS) - 2
Joe Daniher - 43

Joey D has had 11 more Hit Outs then the other 8 combined!

Need to factor in inside 50 stats also.

We are bottom three for inside 50 stat so he's not going to have as many chances to tackle as some of the others.

Having said that their is always room for improvement.

It was good that we cooked him in the Brisbane game after a lot of people disagreed with putting him on the ball. Has benefited big time with his fitness.

I've argued this earlier on in this thread - our way of going i50 isn't bomb it to a tall contest - it's clearing zones and letting our smalls go after it. When you watch Joe he passes the eye test on running hard and chasing (despite looking like Bambi doing so).

I guess its the repeat entries where we are down on. Most teams against us this year have been able to bang it back in straight after we take our kick outs and that's when its the most congested.

We still haven't mastered that yet so when we do Joe and the other forwards will get a lot more opportunity to tackle.

As you say he actually pressures the ball carrier well so I don't think its a massive issue at all.

Based on current ladder position he's averaging 3.75 goals per game against top 8 teams and 2.2 against bottom 10 sides. Of course this is skewed by the horrid conditions against Carlton and the wayward kicking against Melbourne, but would love to see him really beat up on a shit side this week. :thumbsu:

Stewart potentially?
Poor man's Joe. But I rate Joe that highly that it's not really a slight on Stewart.

I've decided I don't mind Joe in the ruck. He's the kind of player that doesn't do things by halves. He gets an idea about what he wants to achieve and then pursues it relentlessly, so if he wants to be a premier relief-ruck as well as a premier forward then I'd be inclined to let him.

He will. He's been building gradually since the start of the season with hauls of two and three but now that team has clicked we are reeping full rewards.

I don't think you get the full grasp of how good Derp is until you have seen him live...

Must admit i wasn't sure about him in his first few games and thought the speed and pressure of AFL would render him neutralized fairly easily until i witnessed him live...

That Roving his own Ruck taps is a thing of beauty i think we will see more of soon too... It's virtually unstoppable when he nails it...

As an aforementioned hater of Joe rucking I must say his tap work has gotten better, seems to be getting more creative with it and trying to hit it into spots where the mids can run on to it. I'll lower my stance to allowing forward half rucking from him.

That's the kind of thing he was doing at junior level because he was just that much bigger than everyone else, it's probably the first time I've seen him physically assert himself on a game in that way in the seniors though
