He doesn't have to play for them all the time. He doesn't have to play for them at all. Just try to mark the ball and have faith that they'll pay something if it's there. If they don't then just keep playing. You're on a hiding to nothing doing that sort of shit and there's no better way to ensure you don't get any frees going forward (as you correctly point out in the second part of your post).
I agree that he gains nothing from it but at the end of the day he's human and he's also a competitor.

Rather than focus on his reaction maybe the focus needs to be placed on why he's reacting that way because not only is Joe the face of Essendon but sooner rather than later he is going to be the poster boy for the AFL and people pay good money to watch players like him and not the defenders hanging off him.

Agreed. So compete for the ball and let the rest take care of itself.

The only focus on him reacting that way is going to be negative. If the meedja see him getting hung off and generally violated constantly in marking contests and not rewarded it'll only be a matter of time before they start a narrative around it. If he makes a habit of trying to accentuate contact that's there (or worse not there) and then looking at the umpire incredulously while the ball is still in play it'll only be a matter of time before the meedja start an entirely different and decidedly more unpalatable narrative.

The superstar rule needs to be applied to him and soon.

They all get looked after and he should be no different.

I think his knee is not as good as they would have us believe. He hasn't taken any massive marks and his agility hasn't been as brilliant ever since he jarred his foot into the ground and then hyper-extended his knee the following week. Pretty much just jumps straight up and down in the ruck and that's it.
That's an interesting point, since he injured his knee against Carlton he's kicked 6 goals in 15 quarters. He averaged 0.76 goals a quarter before the injury, since it he averages 0.4 goals a quarter.

Top 5 goal kickers Essendon vs North

Essendon:
  • Daniher 62 goals
  • Hooker 40 goals
  • Fantasia 38 goals
  • Tippa 34 goals
  • Stewart 22 goals
North:
  • Brown 63 goals
  • Waite 22 goals
  • Higgins 18 goals
  • Turner 17 goals
  • Garner 18 goals
Slice it anyway you want, Daniher had to compete with more players to kick the amount of goals that he did.
