AFL Player # 6: Jye Caldwell

Watched the first half again this morning whilst the kids decided that 4am was a suitable time to wake up.

I can see why we pushed so hard to get him and why GWS were so salty he left.

Looks to be a genuine get. If his body holds up, that combo of Caldwell, Merrett and Parish will go a long way to getting success back at our club. Add in Draper, Shiel, Stringer running through, and that’s a seriously dynamic group

Ones fight and the others flight response

His tackling, aggression, 2 way running and kicking are above and beyond plus he can hit the scoreboard better

Hes not as explosive or quick breaking the lines

I feel him and Hobbs will be like Adams and Beams crashing in for 10 years

Jeez this is just blatantly incorrect on Shiel who is probably our best two way runner at the club.

Why can’t people seperate the fact we overpaid for him at the trade table from his actual performances

Agree Shiel works harder than most the other way

Caldwell looked really good. Just everywhere and didn't allow Parish to get clean possessions for a lot of it. That said, I feel like Parish was taking it a bit easy.
Yeah, there’s an element of control to Merrett and Parish’s games where they still crack in for the hard stuff but don’t look frantic. Caldwell, looks like a mad man. Probably comes with experience and maturity, although could go some way to explaining parish and merretts longevity to date

Selwood looks like a madman after over 300 games, think it's just how some players operate.

Caldwell (hopefully) will be the kind of player opposition players short step a bit when they see him coming for the ball.

Some just have trouble seeing past their blinkers or reading anything other than the basics in a game .

How Selwood has made it to 300 games is extraordinary. That’s one hard head he’s got.

Whatever people think about his free kick stats, he’s absolutely tough as nails and an incredible leader. Any club would take an 18yo Selwood in a heart beat.

What could have been. Dam you to hell AFL.

On-ball brigade is really starting to look dynamic. Other clubs will be so conscious of not allowing Parish to accumulate, hopefully with no answer to Caldwell gathering possessions. And if the intra-club a couple of weeks ago is anything to go by, Hobbs will be just as capable in a couple of years. It's a Hydra!

Best game I’ve seen him play today.
Might not show up on the stat sheet but had heaps of confidence possessing the ball around the contest and willing to take the tackler on. Huge upside.
His contested ability and clean hands set up plenty up forward but we need it in the midfield more, coaches need to realise this.

Is fast overtaking McGrath and Shiel in the midfield pecking order.

Wow Merrett, Parish and Caldwell starting on ball now in a must win midfield scenario.

One of only a handful of players who genuinely seem to seek contact before disposing of it.

He’s the kind of guy you want around the ball because he’s going to scrap for it, tackle, collide, and generally do the ugly crash and bash that too many others won’t.

Hopefully he gets a clear run at it this season.
