You could look at things another way.

Since 2000

5 clubs, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney & West Coast have won 12 of the 21 flags and produced 12 of the 21 runners up also.
(27.77% of all clubs make up 57.14% of all premiers and grand finalists)
....and every year after 2001 at least onc, usually more, of those five have featured in at least the prelminary final stage(final four).

I mean what I'm trying to illustrate is you can combine stats to form any kind of argument of why (..and which) teams are always doing well despite the equalisation measures....although obviously the MCG game day factor is a plus to Victorian based sides on GF day.
