If he's going to hand it over, it should be because he wants to mentor Drew for a year or two while he still plays.

Not because of any form bullshit being peddalled on here. He is clearly still ****ed by that injury.

3 touches after 1/2 time on Sat night in conditions that `should' suit him tells me his reign as captain should be over & his career as a footballer is well & truely at the crossroads.

He was very good again for most of this year. Didn't come back well from injury, underperformed in the last few games and that's all some people remember. He'll stop playing when he's ready and give up the captaincy when he's ready and that's fine with me.

Kirk showed Simmo what being a captain is all about.
If you supported Sydney, i have no doubt you would be a massive Kirk bagger. Kirk and Simmo are very similar, and Simmo has had plenty of games like Kirk had tonight where he has dragged us over the line.

I think he should give the captaincy to Petrie and play out his last year in a support role to Drew.

He has been a fantastic servant, but I don't think he is suited for the modern game any longer.

It is all about possessions, run and carry, effective disposals. How many finals do we need to bomb out of with a defensive midfield that can't get the ball to our outside midfielders before it is time to make a change?

Our midfield has far too often this year struggled to perform. it is time to force a change. We can make the top 4 next year but if we have the same defensive midfield we will get obliterated by a fast high possession midfield in the finals.

110% correct...

He will be 33yo before the season starts next year....He should follow James hird from last year ( who was playing alot better than Simpson has) and give it away...
At 33 and poor skills and being slow the game has gone straight past you....
Let it go Adam....Let it go

I think that it is probably time for him to go. Like someone else said, we should hand the baton over to the new generation - now just seems like the right time. Put your faith in other people to stand up and they probably will.

Not sure I agree with that H2H and not sure that is correct for any player let alone Simmo.

In my mind it's what's best for the club not the player. We need to bring a new batch of midfielders through asap. Agree he's been a great player but it's not just about him now. Like anyone else he needs to be getting game on his merits and to warrant retaining an AFL captaincy he needs to be performing at a very high level in 2009.

Re: 7. Adam Simpson

Round 21,

Geelong Vs North Melbourne,

Adam Simpson's Stats:

Kicks:11
Handballs: 16
Marks: 2
Inside 50's: 3
Clangers: 7
Tackles: 1
Clearances: 4
Contested Poss: 10
Uncontested Poss: 20
Efficiency: 52%
Time on ground: 81%

These were just some of the stats i could find.

Crap game, we lost. That about describes this game in one.

Poor game by Simmo's standards, sure got alot of the ball but made way to many critical turnovers. The second quarter would have been his worst quarter of the season. In that quarter he cost us 3 goals from direct turnovers.

The only positives would be that he never gave up, worked hard for the whole game unlike some who couldn't be bothered. I'm sure this game was a one off & he will be back to himself against the Power.

Match Rating: 4

Season Average: 6.42

Season Total: 122
Seems like this game was more like a three-off for Simmo. How did you rate his final?

Simmo shouldn't have played against PA and was still not fit on Saturday night. Last 4 weeks he has excuses.
Read on another thread that he knew he was not right to play.....

32yo thats not right trying to play finals footy......Either selfish or stupid but just a contributing factor to the loss.....

We are 21 points up at about 23 mins in first quarter...handball at CHF comes straight to Simpson....wheels around for 4 paces and kicks straight into on coming traffic...Ball flys back 30m the wrong way...Jack to running goodes goal......Swans finally on their way and quickly kick the next 2 goals.....Massive pivotal moment in the game.....HHHmmmmmm:thumbsdown:

Players were either voting on mad Monday or they were Geelong & Carlton players using the Simpson box on the ballot as a Donkey vote to keep their own gun captains in the mix.

Regardless, if their names are on the voting form, they will be target tested all season in 2009!

Yeah, he kicked it into the back of Watt. And the irony is Simmo has become a touch like Watt in that when they make a mistake, it usually results as a goal to the opposition.
Heard Martin Pike on SEN last night say that a few years ago at Brisbane, when the players voted on `Most Courageous Player' for the AFLPA Award, 10-12 of them voted for Ryan Lonie as a shit-stir.

Yeah let's hang him from his ankles from the North Melbourne Town Hall clock tower. That one kick has to be just about the most heinous act of villainy since Genghis Khan was wearing short pants. Get a grip Wellsfan. Your opinion has been exposed as foolish by the majority of footballers in the AFL. They might just have a better idea about captaincy than you.

Also, our players voted him in the best three players at the club (with Petrie and Boomer) up until the time of the nominations.

And we on Bigfooty had in as the 3rd best player at the club for most of the year.

Also led the club in total clearances despite playing 2 games less than the next best player.

But yeah, he had a bad few games coming back from injury. De-list him.

King Kong Bundy would've been a big help here - he always wanted `5'. The sheer arrogance of demanding a 5-count instead of a 3-count. And interesting that the Moral Police (AKA Caro & Mike Sheahan) never raised an eyebrow at such behaviour. If Fevola did this....... Bloody double standards.

As a captain, I would rate him above all of them except Harley, Judd and Kirk.

He shouldn have played against Carlton and Port. Scotty Burns was injured and he pulled out. Didnt want to affect the team. Simmo should of got his body right for the finals and seeing him against a fully fit Brett Kirk was heartbreaking. But his actions need to be made accountable.
