Player Watch #7: Daniel Butler

AFL.com.au understands Butler will walk for next to nothing, with the Tigers well aware of St Kilda's long list of demands this Telstra AFL Trade Period.

Richmond's asking price falls in line with deals it did last year for Corey Ellis and Anthony Miles (combined for a swap of future third-round picks with Gold Coast), Sam Lloyd (pick 64) and Tyson Stengle (68).

---------------------------------------------------------------

Essentially, Butler isn't best 22 and we all know that, so in 12 months time, he'll be even further away so it makes sense just to cut ties. We'll draft youngsters on a fraction of the cost who could have much more upside.

We have Stack, RCD, Ross, Turner, Naish, CCJ who we'll prioritise for AFL game time. Even Luke English could play a similar role to Butler with midfield stints, he's a bit of a forgotten man.

We know exactly what we're doing.

Not sure how it works this yr. Is there a rookie list or are the rookies now part of one big list.

We have 1 very good pick and 3 decent ones. With trades we may well have more decent picks.
Imo we will use about 5 but we have 4 rookies who should come onto the list proper Stack, DES, Baker, and Pickett. If we want to keep Chol does he now have to be put on the list proper as well? im not sure.

If we wish to promote those rookies and use 5 nd picks then we are looking at 9 trades/retirement/delistings

If the magic number is 9 and like i said im up in the air about how it works this yr then the 9 most likely to go are.

Grigg retired
Weller retired.
Ellis trade.
Aarts delist
Townsend delist
Menadue trade
Butler trade

the above 7 seems to be the most likely. Then there's

McIntosh trade a possibility
Moore delist
Miller delist
Markov delist/trade.

Thats 11. It seems they are the most likely ones to be traded/delisted.

This is much how I see it. So many of those players are good at VFL but can't make AFL. Towner, Menadue, Butler, Moore and Markov especially have been stars in the VFL recently.

Markov is the only one I'd be keen to keep just cos he seemed to find a new role as a lead up forward towards the back end of the year and every time I read the VFL report it felt like he was kicking goals.

I'd be trading Kmac too, Miller just doesn't seem to be developing though he's a big fella so maybe he get's another couple years just cos of that.

Think Butler could still be a decent role player at a lesser side, but he just hasn't kicked on the way he should have since 2017.

He was the perfect fit for the Richmond system. I think Dan's key weakness, and reason why he struggled to get a game in recent times, is lack of ability to compete overhead. Bolton, Rioli, Constagna and Stack all play tall, you can kick it up in the air and be confident of getting aerial contest. I don't think this is the case with Butler.

Interestingly when Dimma played Kingy up forward in a early version of the pressure forward role he had the same issue...couldn't really compete in the air.

He is and will always be a Tiger legend

Ironically just as I finished this reply, Bolton took his big hanger in QF against Brisbane which lead to a Lynch goal.

Shouldn't have knocked back the 2 year deal we put on the table for him.

Instead he's going to end up at St Kilda or Carlton, he won't be playing finals again in his career but at the end of the day, at least he won a premiership while he was with us.
a bit harsh, butts is still young, you would think carlton and saints would both be eyeing off finals 2022ish.
