Re: 19. Jack Ziebell

I hope the kid won't be injury prone with 2 broken legs already. His old man broke his leg 3 times during his career apparently.

I would prefer to see Jack playing the quarterback/defensive centreman role in 2011 to protect him from a heavy inside schedule for a while until his bones are stronger or recuperate. He could replace Simmo's old role and use his overhead skills and positioning to cut off opposition forays forward and elite field passing to set up attacks.

We have enough top quality inside midfielders with Swallow, Cunnington, Adams, Greenwood, Bastinac to cover this positional change anyway.

Thoughts?
Personally I would like to see him play predominately forward with burst on the ball. His tackling and defensive pressure would be a great asset up forward as one of our weaknesses is allowing the opposition to run the ball to easily out of their defense.

Really nicely written with a good structre, informative and illustrative quotes and a nice payoff (I have done plenty of journo stuff in my time, can't help up but dissect other people's stuff).

I'm also impressed that you didn't feel obligated to make some mention about our 'off-field problems'. I think so many journos (Rohan Connolly and now yourself being honoruable expections that prove the rule) now incude a line or par about us being 'cash strapped' or 'always doing it hard off-field' simply because they feel any North article requires one as a matter of course.

And I know for a fact that especially at The Age if the journos do not include one, the subs or editial staff - including naturellement the Chief Football Writer - will add them in once the journo has filed the copy.

Out of interest - and you don't have to answer his - whereabouts are you in your career: like starting off or well-established.

As you probably know the Border Mail is one of the most respected non-metro papers in the land and is an ideal kickstart for a career with one of the big papers if that's what you want. Also, do you see yourself as sports/footy journo in the long term?

Je ne regrette rien and all that, I had a great career in the UK covering politics and justice and stuff but I do often wonder what would have happened if I'd concentrated on being a footy journalist from the beginning.

Especially now my flog mate JamieJohnstone writes those interminable tracts of shite on the front page here.

Just saw from the Rate Your Year on GD that you are 21 and I'm presuming the Border Mail job is the new one you refer to there.

Good effort that. As I said above, the BM is widely respected in the media world and a few years there to kick off your career will hold you in fantastic stead with editors elsewhere.

A word of advance: do your level best to try and win a Young Journo of the Year award of some sort, you know, best young regional rpint journo, something like that. An award on your CV gets you a long way in journalism, especially given what a crowded market it is.

Yeah mate, this is my first gig.

Absolutely set on sport, done a bit of general stuff and can definitely handle it but the sole reason I got into the industry was to cover sport.

Certainly happy up here at the moment because as you said, it's a great paper, but my heart is definitely set on trying to get back to one of the major metros in Melbourne.

How do all those award type things work? I've only been in the industry for five months so still pretty naive when it comes to that sort of stuff:p

Good effort mate. Judging by your avatar pic, you're also a soccer fan - won't be too many articles about Barca in Border Mail I wouldn't have thought...;)

Maybe you can slot a piece about Xavi or Inniesta winning the World Player of the year award.

On a serious note, not that I am an industry expert or something, but I would suggest interviewing a coach or a senior AFL club official would also be good for your CV. Basically, the logic being that you can handle yourself with the tougher, older person, and throw in some difficult question or two, that should hold you in a good stead. Not too many 21 year olds would be interviewing senior coaches, but there is your chance to stand out.

Brad Scott would be an easier start than the 2010 Premiership coach - just a tip...;)

Spent my uni years down in Geelong and worked part time, fired a few at Bomber Thompson over the journey in his press conferences.

quite the experience.

his stare is scary.

also covered GF2 this year, so was present for the Malthouse and Lyon pressers, didn't get a question in though.

I see Jack shaved 30 seconds off his pre-christmas time-trial?

Ziebs obviously wasn't telling me fibs when he said it was as fit as he'd been at the club :p

Woooop Woooop!!!! Basti's back and Jack's fitter than ever, giddyup! Maybe you should do a couple more north interviews Bourky? Could help shave 30 seconds of a few more blokes PB's. :)

Can. not. wait. to see more of the Ziebs in action. It's almost like he's a new recruit, only better.

Looking forward to much more of this...
