Seeing both he and Cunnington in this week didn't make sense when a quicker bloke like Urqs was needed at Subi.
Maybe as a sub, but that was about it. However. Warren was the more sensible choice.

There's a reason that Gav runs laps at training whilst everybody else does ball skills. His endurance isn't up to scratch. He would have died out there yesteday, and from all reports he had a pretty unforgettable hit out for Werribee v Coburg.

Certainly the worst game of his short career to date. It was unusual to see him make so many poor decisions buy every player has games like this so no need for panic.

His biggest issue though is that is a long way back fitness wise in comparison to his contemporaries and this is not going to change any time soon unfortunately. He has just turned 20 and had his first proper preseason. I would expect that he will benefit from playing a full year and getting another preseason under his belt but I don't expect to see JZ running out games strongly for another 18-24 months by which time he will still have 8-10 years of quality football in front of him, injury permitting.

It's obvious that Bon sees him as an important part of the team 'going forward', so I don't expect him to be sent back to the seconds after one poor outing. If we can get 60-70% game time out of him and 20 touches a game then I think that will be a good return considering he generally does something good with it. Still got a lotta JZ love in me yet.

I'll have a bet each way - the bloke has certainly shown more than just courage. But let's give him some time to recover some match fitness and not worry about expectations too much. If he never meets his perceived potential after those injuries, well he wouldn't be the first as we know all too well.

Sure, he did some terrible things, the kick in, being caught holding the ball.

He also looked pretty damn good going back through traffic and drilling the ball across field to edwards in the first quarter. Shows a lot of poise does young Jack.

Seeing it was his first game back off a broken leg, interstate, and the team was playing in a kiln, Ill cut him some slack.

There can be only one...
You don't drop a potential 200+ gamer for just one poor game. That knee-jerk bullshit usually sends players backwards with psychological issues rather than forwards.

Re: 19. Jack Ziebell

Round 1- West Coast Eagles

The Summary:
Well, Jack's first up performance wasn't one of his best games, some would say one of his worst.

His first touch was class, after finding his way through traffic, he put a 45m pass out infront of Azza who was the only one who could get to it.

However his kick-in that went over the head of Rawlings (who has to take some of the blame) went straight into the arms of Priddis and gave the eagles some momentum after we had kicked the first three goals.

He was also caught holding the ball deep in the eagles forward line having tried to do too much and not having had taken the first option. That also resulted in an eagles goal.

It is also fair to say that his fitness, whilst improving, isnt quite there yet. Was cramping early in the last quarter, as were a lot of other players I might add, and was moved deep forward and didn't have much of an impact as he was, on most occaisions, in a 2v1 situation.

Overall, he would be the first to say that his game wasnt up to scratch, however the kneejerk reaction to drop him to the VFL is a little premature. He needs time in AFL to get back up to speed, having had both his seasons ended prematurely by broken legs. I have full confidence that this will happen.

Looking for an improved effort next week and for Jack to return to the damaging player that we have seen in his previous 24 games. However, it wont be easy as we take on the Collingwood juggernaut and then after a week off, we head over to Subi again (FU AFL) to play the Dockers.

Oh dear, people already calling for Jack's dropping to the ressies. Please people give him a chance. He should continue to play in the seniors because he will come good sooner rather than later.

From what i saw it was his fitness that was the problem..

Completely spent after half time and couldn't chase at all.

Until he gets a proper tank he will have plenty of games like last night

because if you can't get to contests then you are wasting your time.

He will get better as the year goes on.

P.S

Geez I liked Adams and Cunnington last night...Especially Adams :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Jack had an ordinary game - no question. But not on his own. And he did show a touch of class from time to time. Dumb call to drop him but I am sure our coaching panel has the smarts to be able to talk him through his mistakes.

Especially Cunnington. With so little preseason proper his poise under pressure was top shelf. Adams a genuine gun - if he could kick straight. Misses too many simple chance that Boomer would get every time. Tarrant the bonus of the day. Chill time I thinks for North supporters.

I would give him another week or two, but if he fails to gain some touch and increase his running ability, he needs to go back to the VFL and work on it there then promote whomever is deserving.

VFL form should not be ignored, look at what Pederson produced on the weekend.

Nup, not copping this. Knee jerk reactions to rd.1 results is probably my most hated trait in football commentators/supporters. Jack is a third year player coming off injury breaks who is easily in our best 22. Do you think B Scott will change 6 months of planning for 1 bad kick in and 1 holding the ball. Please. The first 3 rounds were always going to be very tough, let's take a look at things after rd 5, by then we will have a clear picture of where we are at.

I wouldn't "drop" Ziebell as such. I didn't think he should have played round 1. He needs a good month IMO of VFL footy just to dominate and get some match fitness back. The start of the season is always the quickest and that is his Achilles so I don't see we would lose much by doing it.

Wright and Ziebell is an interesting comparison I think.

Both debuted in 2009 as very promising talents, both have played 25 career games.

In that time Wright has had a full season without interruption from injury, JZ has had 2 broken legs, played 10 games 2009, 14 games last year.

Fair to say he's way behind the eight ball development wise and that, under the circumstances, is to be expected. Wrighty on the otherhand is showing the benefits of an unhindered run playing senior football and the results are obvious.

Calls for Ziebell to be axed at this stage, frankly, are preposterous.

Well, he wasn't great but like everyone else being whipped this week - McMahon, Thompson, Hansen, Garlett etc. - he was nowhere near as bad as people are making out. Brad Scott sums it up well in his press conference.

I'm not calling for him to be dropped. The predictions of him becoming a superstar are premature and unfounded. Jack has some glaring weaknesses in his game that he might or might not overcome.

It was his first 'AFL' match return after two broken legs. Give him a little time.

Admittedly, he was average by his standards last night, in most part due to poor decision making, such as stepping back through the corridor in defence.

He'll hit back hard.
