I will start adding numbers to these drafts based on the cumulative difference between expected and actual numbers of a draftees pick, plus numbers of direct hits.

I have added a number in front of each of the lists below. This is a calculation of the real top 30 compared with where they were expected to be drafted. I added up the absolute differences between the two values. I didn't go above 30th pick, because that would have disadvantaged the drafters who only gave lists of 30. It disadvantaged them a fair bit anyway.

Smaller is better. A score of 300 means each draft pick differed by an average of 10.

The in-season lists:
386 Chris25 5/7 top 60
334 Rancid Trogs 16/7
395 Shamrock 31/7
406 The Trial run 11/8
318 Twomey's September Phantom form guide 8/9
322 Bishop Power Rankings 18/9
322 Carlton Phantom Draft 20/9
290
Footyprophet 1st edition 7/10
380 missionpossible 9/10

Footyprophet a clear winner here, with Callum Twomey also doing well so early. Of the BigFooty posters, Bishop and the Carlton draft were closest.

The post Combine lists:
272 Chris25 21/10

The discrepancies went down after the Combine. A consensus Phantom Draft did well, while RedBull and AFLprospectss were the leaders in this group.

210 Emma Quayle's final phantom draft 24/11

Brett Anderson (SEN) had the better of Cal Twomey and Emma Quayle in the days leading up to the draft.
Among Big Footy posters, Gee Dub's phantom was the most accurate .

I also used the stats I've collected to ask the question "Which clubs reached for their players the most and which got bargains?"
This implies the combined wisdom of the phantom drafts is worth comparing to. Which some would debate, but it does give a numerical figure to the complaints that we all hear when a club selects someone few of us have heard of.
For this, I subtracted the real draft pick of a player from their average phantom draft pick. A player with a negative score was selected lower than expected, a positive score higher.
For example, Sean Darcy got picked at 38, but the 6 drafts that selected him had an average of 73.2. Difference = 35.2. But Luke Ryan was widely tipped to picked earlier (at an average of 33.3) was picked at 66. Difference = -32.7
This was impossible for 5 players who weren't picked by any phantom drafts, so they were left blank. (Geelong had two of these.)

I then added these scores together to get an idea of the difference from expectations of each club's draft picks.

Richmond -45.5
Gold Coast -44.1
Carlton -36.2
Brisbane -28.0
West Coast -26.3
Hawthorn -20.7
Essendon -18.3
Fremantle -5.1
Adelaide -4.7
Sydney 8.6
Port Adelaide 16.7
St. Kilda 22.4
Melbourne 26.0
GWS 27.6
North Melbourne 32.0
Collingwood 36.5
Western Bulldogs 39.0
Geelong 50.4

Overall, Richmond, Gold Coast and Carlton fans should feel happy that they got the biggest bargains, while Geelong, Bulldogs and Collingwood fans will have to trust that their recruiting teams knew what they would were doing, because they reached the most for the players they selected.

Going on from my previous post, these players were the top ten sliders from BigFooty expectations (who actually got selected -Jonty Scharenberg and Zach Sproule share the undrafted sliders title).
Brad Scheer Gold Coast
Patrick Kerr Carlton
Luke Ryan Fremantle
Dylan Clarke Essendon
Jake Waterman West Coast
Ryan Garthwaite Richmond
Harry Morrison Hawthorn
Harrison MacReadie Carlton
Corey Lyons Brisbane
Jack Graham Richmond

These players were the top ten bolters from phantom draft expectations:
Sean Darcy Fremantle
Sam McLarty Collingwood
Patrick Lipinski Western Bulldogs
Mitch Hannan Melbourne
Ben Long St. Kilda
Esava Ratugolea Geelong
Declan Watson North Melbourne
Lewis Young Western Bulldogs
Brandon Parfitt Geelong
Isaac Cumming GWS

These players weren't even considered by any of the 76 drafts I surveyed:
Timm House Geelong
Ryan Abbott Geelong
Matthew de Boer GWS
Mitchell Lewis Hawthorn
Dion Johnstone Melbourne
Fergus Greene Western Bulldogs

If they hadn't been considered perhaps they should be rated at the last drafted position in order to rate the "bolting"?

I could do that, but it wouldn't make much difference. (Just did it to check!)
Instead of adding 0 to the score, it would add between 1 and 13 for the players, except the mighty Matthew de Boer, who would add 19 to the score. Only Hawthorn is in bargain territory in that list, and they still would be (just behind Essendon). Melbourne, GWS, Western Bulldogs and Geelong would be shown to have reached even more.

I hope you do this again this year

It would be interesting to see who did the best draft not based on how accurate they were, but how close they were if the players were drafted now.
The power rankings have always been a bit more interesting in that. Not swayed by trying to predict who clubs want/need

Looking forward to this years effort Clems Knee.
Thank you, I wasn't going to. I was very interested in Sammo PS and how he was going, and this year I don't have as much vested interest. Very time consuming, especially in the week before the draft and setting up. Might give it another crack.

I always planned to look at the phantom drafts again once the redo the 2016 draft thread comes out and (kind of) reaches a consensus. Anecdotedly, I think Quigley is among the best at picking the long term winners. But he picked SPS as number one, so at the moment that opinion is just my confirmation bias. Will be interesting to see.

I looked at all the Phantom Drafts and Rankings that I could find for the 2017 draft and categorised them in the same way as last year. The lists had to be in numerical order down to at least 30. I didn't look at Phantom Rookie Drafts.
This year I found 74 lists, down from 75. No Quigley, no Emma Quayle and no Gee Dub, among others, but some Bigfooty drafters left their earlier boards up for people to see changes.
This year there were 181 individual players named as prospective draftees, compared to 176 last year.

The variation among the top picks was greater this year. Last year 6 players were touted as being no. 1 pick over the course of the year. This year 10 different players were placed no.1 at some stage.
Last year 6 players who didn't get named in any phantom draft got picked up in the real thing. This year there were only 3 - Connor Nutting, Zac Langdon and Sam Switkowski, but there were 4 players who were only named once in phantoms, including the No. 19 pick Wil Powell (named at pick 68 by Brett Anderson).

To evaluate the phantoms, I added together the (non-negative) difference between each top 30 phantom pick and where they really finished. A score of 300 means an average difference of 10 places from their eventual finish. Last year the best (lowest) score was 154. This year it was 167, again by Brett Anderson of SEN. Fair to say, he is the best of the professional Phantom Drafters, by a sizeable margin.

Just like last year I split the Phantoms into three groups: In Season, Post Draft Combine and Last Week.
Last year there were 9 In Season lists beginning in July ranging from 290 to 406 (averaging 350). This year there were 12, beginning in January (5 before July) and ranging from 324 to 613 (averaging 427).
Last year there were 35 Post Draft Combine Lists ranging from 206 to 292 (averaging 245). This year 36 scores ranged from 215 (eastfreo75) to 324 (averaging 306).
Last year there were 32 Last Week Lists ranging from 154 to 357 (averaging 227). This year 26 scores ranged from 167 to 378 (averaging 252).

What does it all mean? It really was a wide open draft, but the depth appears to be better than I expected. I'm really grateful to those who make the effort early in the year, as it is so difficult to get a handle on the young talent. After the combine, the players can't do any more to change their positions and its interesting to see what the draft watchers make of it. In the last week, the phantoms are pretty much based on the rumour mill, and then it becomes a case of who has the better contacts.

More to follow.

2017 Phantom Drafts
The number in front means the cumulated difference between the phantom's top30 and their real position in the draft.
As with last year, smaller is better. A score of 300 means each draft pick differed by an average of 10.

Some of these lists are Phantom Drafts, which try to predict the draft order, and some are rankings which are more likely to differ from the actual draft as they are the poster's opinion of who in the draft pool is the best. eastfreo75 produced a very impressive phantom over 5 weeks away from the draft.

Both years, SEN's Brett Anderson has been the best performer, followed this year by Fox Footy's Riley Beveridge. Bishop and D_P_S were the only two BigFooty posters to beat eastfreo's draft from weeks before.

That’s why Bishop and D_P_S should be everyone’s “go to’s” when it comes to BF draft knowledge.

Well done fellas.

Just as I did last year, I used the stats I've collected to ask the question "Which clubs reached for their players the most and which got bargains?"
This implies the combined wisdom of the phantom drafts is worth comparing to. Which some would debate, but it does give a numerical figure to the complaints that we all hear when a club selects someone few of us have heard of.
For this, I subtracted the real draft pick of a player from their average phantom draft pick. A player with a negative score was selected later than expected, a positive score earlier.

Hawthorn -73.0 Only 3 (late) draftees, but all 3 were sliders.
Port Adelaide -65.9 5 (late) draftees with 3 being sliders
Geelong -40.5 Reversed the strategy of last year with 2 of the 4 draftees being sliders
Richmond -13.0 Only one of the 5 (CCJ) being a belter, with the rest being moderate sliders
Essendon -11.9 Two out of 3 were sliders
Collingwood -10.4 only 3 draftees, with one slider (Murphy)
Adelaide -4.9 Only 2 draftees, both thereabouts, but Fogarty was averaged at 7-8, so they'd be very happy.
Sydney -1.2 Only 3 draftees. One slider (Stoddart) and 2 bolters.
GWS 4.4 (plus a big score for Zac Giles Langdon who wasn't placed in the phantoms) 5 draftees.Apart from Shipley, each player was taken earlier than expected.
Fremantle 6.7 (plus a big score for Sam Switkowski who wasn't placed in the phantoms). 8 draftees. Certainly doesn't deserve a D+ based on the collected wisdom of Phantom drafters. No player (except Sam) was more than 7 from their expected draft position.
St. Kilda 8.0 All 4 draftees close to expected draft position
Western Bulldogs 9.3 all 3 draftees close to expected draft position
North Melbourne 10.8 Will Walker was the big bolter, with the other 4 draftees taken later than expected.
Melbourne 11.7 Bayley Fritsch was a bolter, with the other 3 taken around the mark.
Brisbane 11.8 Of the 6 draftees, Ballenden was a slider, Zac Bailey and Brandon Starcevich were bolters, and the others as expected.
Carlton 12.0 (plus a big score for Jarrod Garlett who wasn't placed in the phantoms) 5 draftees. Schumacher was expected earlier by those who rated him (only 3), but all others were taken earlier than predicted.
West Coast 18.5 6 draftees. Liam Ryan and Brayden Ainsworth were bolters, but the other 4 draftees were taken slightly later than expected.
Gold Coast 28.0 (plus a big score for Connor Nutting who wasn't placed in the phantoms) 4 draftees. Wil Powell the true bolter of the draft, which was countered by two sliders.

Overall, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Geelong fans should feel happy that they got the biggest bargains, while Gold Coast, West Coast and Carlton fans will have to trust that their recruiting teams knew what they would were doing, because they reached the most for the players they selected.
