Player Watch #8: Jack Riewoldt

Jack doesn't do that now either mate. He'd be the most ineffective number 1 in the AFL that I can think of atm.

Amen.
He's not pulling his weight!
This nonsense others can't do what Jack does is exactly that as Jack is doing nothing.

He is finished, he would know that.

Bauer needs to be developed next season along side Lynch.
Him playing helps no one next year we are not competing we are a bottom 4 team next season.

I honestly don't think he does listening to him on 360.

And hearing Dermie and the entire 360 staff crap on in support of him staying on sounds alot like they are trying to put some merit to his belief.

The club has to tell him its all over, its their job

Yes, I've been watching his 360 interviews but he has not announced anything which worries he is being convinced to play on.
hopefully last week it was all about Cotch, I hope this week Riewoldt announces the body is done.

Couldn’t take simple marks on the lead because he couldn’t get his feet off the ground and let it go over his head

Sat at the back of numerous packs waiting for a crumb instead of going up with his opponent because he couldn’t leap

Retirement will be this morning imo

I think he wants to keep playing and maybe he will sign on again.
Young has been playing well enough to allow us to look at Gibcus as the KPF role that Jack is playing. If he ever recovers.

I'm not sure who is the draft that we could target, that player would be behind Ryan or Miller.
I think Cumberland is a good 3rd fwd. So he and Bauer as medium talls with Lynch.

The club is good at targeting F/As so I'd hope that some plan is in place. Tricky cos there's not many KPFs around, it takes long contracts to get them to move clubs.

Bauer did what Jack did in his prime, obviously not as well, but he leapt at the ball in the pack. Bauer might be a tad short, and needs a good preseason in the weights room, but he has a big spring which offsets his height, and he really goes at the ball. He deserves his shot at FF to see how he goes until somebody better comes along. Sorry Jack.

One of the reasons why we are sitting 13th besides the obvious of Lynch missing is that Jack is our premier forward. It is almost sacrilege to say that, but it is a fact. His last half of the season has been poor and he would not be playing but for what he has done for our club.

He needs to be tapped on the shoulder if he doesnt pull the pin!

We are better off losing with playing kids and developing them!

Another year of this garbage will tarnish his legacy

Watching Bauer's speed and leap on the lead yesterday really highlighted how far Jack has regressed. Yeah, Bauer didn't mark many of them, but I'd rather watch him (or another forward) develop than see Jack hobble through another season.

Has to go...

It would be selfish to go on now.

Speaking of selfish, it was pretty selfish of him in the 2nd or 4th quarter to take a mark & stand there whinging at the umpire for a 50m while ignoring coulthard in a paddock streaming into an open goal

I'm back and forth on this one. Really depends on the prognosis of the Lynch and Gibcus injuries, trade targets, the projection of Bauer, Ryan and Bradtke and if he's willing to play a lot of VFL footy.
I understand why people might be 50/50.

But we will unlikely be contending next year as it stands, so if we make that our baseline, then all Jack playing on does is take games away from the players we need to be our future.

yes there will be cries that, they are not good enough or ready, but no one really is as a KPF. and if those same people were being honest, some of Jacks performances this year haven't warranted his selection either, but he's earnt those credits. But we can't be foolish and let that continue to happen, all it does is set the club back, from either finding out if who we have are good enough OR finding out they are not good enough and get to finding their replacements.

That is true, but Jack has had plenty of very average games, if not worse.
11 out of 19 games of between 4 and 9 possessions and 5 games with one goal and 4 games with 0 goals.
They are not numbers that any other no.1 forward target might have gotten if they played an entire season.

And we have not seen what Gibcus might do forward, if not him then perhaps someone like Young.

We have not drafted a decent draft pic forward, so we will have to think outside the square.
What is to stop them experimenting with someone like Broad playing forward.
You know you will get a cracking contest with Broad, who is quick, courageous and not bad in the air.

I would rather see them try something new that go back to Jack, because we are a middle of the pack side and we will not be anything more than that until we unearth some form of new formula in our forward half.
Will be controversial … but Broad has slowed a yard in pace too and has been average in recent weeks IMO along with most of them.
Not the player he was three years ago or even last year.
Still had a reasonable season but a long way off what he was.

Was really good early in the year but has not come back after his suspension in that form. His first dip in form in years so who knows.

Agree. Has benefited from being in a good backline until last couple of years. Is a pretty limited player - not quick, don’t really want him kicking it, not an intercept marker, decision making not great so losing a metre of speed makes him look very suspect under pressure. Also my pet hate - one of our players who is tackled and just gets rid of it or let’s it fall loose anywhere rather than hold it in.

yep balance it out. play some vfl etc.
if he plays next year, he's not playing VFL... the only reason he would play on, would be to help the ones. And the only way he could get through a season would be to play 2 games, then rest 1, no interstate travel and possibly avoid the hard deck at Marvel.

When he's not playing ones, he resting, not playing VFL.

When you then have to see how compromised his position would have to be to make an impact, then you realise it's time to hand them up

look you're not wrong. still torn on him playing on. still think he has some value to us, still think they youngsters need to force him out.

If he played 12 games next year he would be far more impactful. I think we need to keep him.

thats 12 games where the kids don't get the opportunity! we are not contending, need to develop the kids even if it means losing everygame. Not like JR is winning games of his boot these days

He needs to pull the pin or get tapped

Really. Broad has been our best backman for two years I think, maybe on par with Rioli. There would be very few quicker 193cm players going round. He has great timing in the air and has added rebound to his game. He averaged more rebound from 50 that Rioli last season and averaged 3 less disposals. He is in a bit of a form slump since his return from suspension but he has been great for us before that.
