James Rowbottom

The Sydney Swans recruited James Rowbottom with their second selection at the 2018 AFL Draft and the midfield bull impacted from the get-go. The Oakleigh Chargers product made his AFL debut against Richmond at Marvel Stadium in Round 5, 2019 and finished the season with 12 senior games beside his name. Rowbottom also led the NEAFL MVP voting when it was hidden from the public after Round 12. The young Swan is a ball magnet, explosive at the stoppages, an outstanding tackler and a clean user of the footy.

James Rowbottom
DOB: 19 September 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #25, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Camberwell (Vic)/St Kevin's College (Vic)/Oakleigh U18

I genuinely don't understand how the media constantly overlook his influence. Without him I very much doubt that the "big 3" would have the influence they do.
That's the first thing Heeney, Warner and Gulden say about him!

He is like Viney or Liberatore or Prestia. There is always one in every good team.

He doesn't get spoken about and then when we win, the media go 'this guy is awesome'.

We don't have a big 3, we have a big 4.

Rowbottom is every bit as important as the other 3. Has been phenomenal all season and has gone another level in finals.

Positions himself well and has been able to turn defence into attack this finals series. Always makes the right decision as well, hard at it, great footy IQ, and hunts his opponents down.

Completely agree. One of the things I've particularly noticed is that he seems to be the one to take the game on himself especially when the rest of the midfield isn't firing. His effort seems to be much more even across the game.
For a player playing in such a physically demanding role his durability in his career so far has been especially impressive.
For a defensively minded player he seems to get goals relatively often when he is rotating to the forward line. It will be interesting to see if as he develops he improves this side of his game.

I hope he gets a bit more of campaigner in him. He’s already an ultra competitive player. Just add the campaigner which might be hard because he is seen as a big introvert in the club.

After a slow start to the season, his last 2 games have been great. He started to win clearances at will & was the highest rated player against the Kangas, however that's formulated. Great to see him captain the side & put in a true bloods performance. Hope he gets the captaincy again. Has he unlocked another level in his game with his clearance winning ability? I certainly hope so...

Took me back to Kirky captaining days when he had blood running down his face early in the game ❤️

I have two comments about the music they have paired with that clip, Eminem's Lose Yourself:

1. I think it's a bit cheeky of them to be having a dig at our strip but I actually completely agree - "there's vomit on his sweater" is the line - and this particular training jumper looks terrible. I can't really think why else they would have chosen this little clip at that exact point of the song if they weren't having a go at strip. Then again it's the club's own Insta account so that is quite surprising.

2. Possibly one of the all time greatest covers I have ever heard (of any song) is Kasey Chambers' cover of this very song. Well worth checking out if you have even a hint of interest:

.

I'm not an Eminem fan but listening to this cover has dramatically increased my appreciation for Eminem's art and poetry as well as dramatically increasing my appreciation for Kasey Chambers.

We had Kasey here in January. She's a blast.
