Autopsy 8 point loss to Essendon

That was WTF kind of game.

Me looking at the Essendon list. Wow, that's a really tall talented back line, we are going to need to be careful about how we go inside forward 50 or we will get out marked. Cox, we are going to go long inside 50, and we did. WTF ?

The game starts and we are not going man on man, and they waltz through our zone defence. Reminiscent of the GF. WTF?

The players seem unsure of the game plan. WTF?

Heeney, Chad, Campbell, and most of the rest can't kick straight to save themselves. Not to mention Juzzy. WTF?

Heeney can't keep his feet.WTF?

Sheldrick is made sub after showing last week that he is crucial to our midfield effectiveness.WTF?

The umpires decide, after a 3 to 1 against free kick ratio last week, that there are new rules this week that are only going to be applied to the Swans. WT bloody F.?

Season on the line and it's not looking good. WTF?

That gave me the best laugh of the evening thanks mate

He played against a guy who was too old and slow for north - a team that hasn’t won ten games in five years. You’d hope he was doing stuff

But he still gave away his usual free kicks and was still appalling in the ruck - by as a follower he did well - he might be our best tackler in the midfield

Yep fair summary, still solid compared to most

2024 Grand Final certainly changed that.

Each game this season has been so tough to get excited about. Senior players are coasting by, showing up for 20-25 minutes each game and there's no youngsters coming through that are catching the eye, either in the AFL or VFL. It's what made 2020/21/22 so exciting and fun to watch, even if we weren't the best team.

Love the club, but there's not much to get excited about at the moment - maybe Errol and Amartey coming back, but that's it.
That's a huge worry. Throughout most of the 2010's (up until about a couple of years ago) we always seemed to have some exciting young players coming through. Who's coming through now? Cleary looks the most exciting and even he's not as promising as some of the young guns that we've had in the past. Errol and Chad are still young I guess but they're already stars.

Meanwhile people like Hewett and Dawson was forced to spend heaps of time in the NEAFL and we were hyping up how awesome they looked. No-one like that now!'

I can't see a team with so many guns going Bottom 4 - but we might be stuck in the Essendon/St Kilda area for a number of years - which might be worse.

When we play well we have a runner going past. You can tell immediately when we're off because we don't give it...and today in the first half we had that runner going past to give it to, but burned them then did a pointless sideways kick instead. Roberts alone did this 3 times in the first half, numerous other guilty as well.
That has to be attitude not instruction. We start so causal and timid/lazy so often in the last 12 months, have to fall so far behind before we wake up to and get some urgency in our game.

I'm not too stressed tbh, anyone who thought we would be good this year after getting slaughtered in the GF and then changing coaches has to get their expectations in line. First 2 quarters were still woeful.

We’ve signed a bunch of players on long term deals ….. which means we don’t have the cap space, or list flexibility to bring in many players.

And if we keep busting at the draft - grim times are inevitable.

It’s not all doom and gloom - we still have quality if & when they can get on the park.

But we can’t afford to lose youngsters with upside like Sheldrick because we prefer to give games to Patons and Hamlings. Which is exactly where things are heading.

Thats the crux of today loss not so much the result, i didnt think we would drop that much i expected 8-10th finish not bottom 4.

As frustrating as the season will be there could be a fair bit of silver lining missing the 8. Might give the playing group the kick up the ass they need to stop the bathwater drinking and realise they need to get back to playing with some bloody urgency. If we can draft competently in the first round for a change, we might even grab a kid with elite talent which we're in dire need of.
Having said that you'd hope they don't just roll over and show enough heart to keep fighting for the season until mathematically impossible.

Funny how many of them lifted in contract years.

But they’re mostly on secure long term deals now.

Not a shit take, Just a frustrated supporter and a bad loser and when Warner signed he felt this team was heading in the right direction, so I would even question where we are as a team, injuries are having an effect but nothing resembles what we produced last year, we are a shadow of the team we were last year.

I think we're a similar team to last year - especially that last game of 2024.

So since the rain hit gws win last year we are now

9 wins
12 losses

points for 1757. average score 83.7
points against 1806

% 97.28

We have scored 100 in a game 3 times, 2
coming against North.

Goalless quarters - 5

I've been critical of Blakey and still missing a trick imo playing him so deep.

But that last defensive effort and his chasing was great today, got a lot of ball kicked straight to him at times, but thought he battled at least more than he had other weeks.

Just think he could have won the game in the middle rather then defend it in the back half.
Was playing like Wayne Carey in the first qtr. Marking everything

That game was a shambles, 61 i50s is a joke as well as our kicking at goal. The club plays bursts of what made us dominant first half last year. 7 50s conceded another joke and surely has to be a record?
Our forwards are incapable of leading....its a worry when Ladhams and Francis are our best leading forwards. The rest are too static. Come on down JUH........
