Past #9: Barry Cable

He did a fund raising bike ride thru the sw of WA recently.

If you get a chance to speak with any Nth supporter of age I recommend you ask them how good Cable was.

You called? OK - the best all round player I have ever seen.

Cable could do anything perfectly. Stab kick, drop kick, punt kick, drop punt, mark on chest, overhead, run and bounce, either hand, either foot. The most talented player in my lifetime.

Cabes worked near me in Pascoe Vale and as kids we would run around Cole Reserve in Cumberland Road Pascoe Vale while Cabes would train by himself. Clubs trained Tuesdays and Thursdays mainly in that era. In between he would do the extras. he would run around with a ball and then stop in the kids area and hand ball through the monkey bars whilst we would pass the ball back. Hardly ever missed. Then he would stand about 15 or 20 from the slide and hand pass to the sweet spot where it would bounce back to him on the full. Could never do that myself. The sort of player that would take others on and almost always beat them. It was the era you could tap the ball in front of you and not be pinged if they grabbed you - he was a master at that.

The bloke was a skills freak. First season at North he would handpass to players backs and feet because they were too slow to react.

Right up there as the best player I have seen in terms of skills.

Sheehan had no scandal to talk about - was all football (and a bit of post footy farm injuries).
If he played for pies or Hawks he'd have been listed as greatest of all time

He is known as one of the greatest. He's an AFL Legend. That's the highest honer any player can achieve

Watching the highlights, he seems like a cross between Cunners & Boomer

It would be more accurate to say that both Cunners and Boomer have some of the traits of Barry Cable. IMHO (not so humble really), Barry Cable is the best player North has ever had.

I think when listening to the interview and he was talking about a young, nervous Joseph. People saying to him why would you want to go to North, they're no good. Hearing him say how that made him want to play for us more, he loved the underdog.
He really struck a chord with me. Reminded me (sadly) of a past Australian mentality. Getting behind the underdog and building them up. He knew coming to North he'd be a target and was completely comfortable with that. He wore the hits and just went about his business.

It sort of also makes me sad, that part of Australian personality is dying. Players these days will only choose to go to top clubs. They don't want to build success, they want to be injected into it. I realise North used the 10 year rule to their advantage, that has nothing to do with Cable.

I reckon that's what I respect about him the most. He came to North before they became the power house. The rest followed. Champion

Anyone from WA knows how good he was. Absolute freak with hand and foot. Had the ability to not only see options that others just wouldn't see, but the ability to find that option when others couldn't. Even as a kid I loved watching him play for East Perth, despite hating the Royals!

Played against his son a few times, good player, thought he would have done better at AFL level.

I used to have a paper round in Cumberland rd. The guy who ran the newsagency in Gaffney St at the bottom of the hill near Pacco train station was a North Melbourne supporter. I did that paper round in 1982 or 1983. Was he still working there then?
