Player Watch #9: Charlie Spargo

Winning ground ball inside forward 60m, forward pressure and hitting targets inside 50. All crucial to our game
It’s the running patterns as well, totally changes our approach to goal because they change up the angle at half forward As opposed to the mids just bombing long In a straight like out of the wings into forward territory

people bag tonight’s game, norf were putrid. But After quarter time our only downfall was literally kicking on goal. Wasn’t too many long bomb 50 entries

I like that he lowers his eyes and kicks it short to a forward. Alternatively his eyes are already low because he's 3 feet tall and that 25 metre kick is his full distance. Either way it's generally better than our average forward 50 entry.

It's a quality point, coz he can't kick over a jam tin he can't bomb it in.

We need to recruit more noodle legs.

He isn’t a natural forward/half Forward in my opinion, prettycsure he would have played juniors as a midfielder so it’s like Brayshaw and Harmes in that this isn’t he beat footy and he is even further down the order and won’t play mid, still playing a good role though.

There was a few of us who were sh*t on for saying he was a good kick inside 50 last year. One game turns it around aye lol.
He's good. I think he really adds alot around the CHF line and flanks, he runs wide and then hits up targets.
Forwards have always said that he’s their favourite player to have the ball in the hands of at training because he nails their leads. Shock and horror that an underage second year wasn’t necessarily translating that to games in a 17th placed team lol

his role is quite literally to be the second or third last player in the scoring chain as often as possible, either by hand or by foot or from inside 50 or out of it. Will occasionally kick a goal himself, will occasionally get up the field, but this is what he’s in the side for. It also requires everyone else to play their role

He gets the ball in space forward, doesn't have the body strength to break tackles yet same as Pickett but both added something to our mix.

He needs to play 4 or 5 more of that game for me to be convinced he's worth persevering with personally. When he's not in that kind of form, he doesn't add enough. Young enough to find his place, good luck to him.,

Have always maintained he's one of our best kicks and also most creative. Played well. That's the standard he needs to set. Now we have Koz, Spargo doesn't have to be that small crumbing forward. That's not his jam. He's a forward flanker who can set us up and hit that 30m pass to our leading forwards. Could also see him playing the Caleb Daniel role too as he's a smart kick and usually hits it..

No one's blowing their loads lmao, if anything everyone is too blinded by dislike for him to see that he wasn't even that good on Sunday, he just played in the style of how he played most weeks in 2018 and everyone's forgotten how useful his performance in his role was, especially in our crunch games towards the end of the season. The reason we finally beat four top 8 sides in a row and started winning at the MCG isn't just because the midfield was flying, it's because we started connecting around half forward and players like Spargo are the reason that happened. Everyone's so obsessed with the boom and bust cycle in footy to see that you also just need players to do a job where their best is to make everyone else look better than them, and they're never going to be a star because they don't need to be.
