I have to admit I was sucked in.

Was told that he can't kick and he can't kick.

Can't be a top 10 to 20 mid in the competition if you're as wildly ineffective with the ball as he is.

Agree that he's B grade. But he doesn't have to be soft to be B grade.

Ahh ...the Stanton thing again

You know, it’s stuff like that made me cancel my bf account and not visit this board for over a year.

Think it’s time again. This time for good.

See ya.
So long, take your bullshit "softness" with ya!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Soft :drunk: ?

Geez,
His kicking was poor tonight (and has been pretty poor for the season) but I have no idea how you could consider his game soft.

Solid first season but definitely has another level to go to.

If he can work on the Kicking he could be elite. Wasn’t our worst tonight

A huge disappointment last night, and his season hasn't lived up to the trade currency or paypacket. We need a specialist kicking technique coach for him. So much work to do on his game over summer.

Really disappointed in his game last night. Was so keen to see him stand up and win the ball at the coal face like he did for gws a few years back. He was having an absolute blinder in that prelim against Richmond until he got knocked out. Back him to bounce back next year.

I told yas all he was soft and everyone was still in love with him.

We have paid a huge huge price to get a B- mid who is a very ordinary kick.

Oh but he runs fast.

He is not soft.Never has been. He attacks the footy as hard as anyone and gets smashed most weeks and always has. The kicking has been a disappointment for sure. It has not been as good as it was at the Giants. Two years ago he was close to the Giants most important midfielder and they looked a lot worse side when he got knocked over by Cotchin in that final. The problem he has in our side is he has to do too much of the inside stuff and like Merrett gets beaten up most weeks. There is no one to share the load. When you watch behind the play live at games both him and Merret are constantly being crashed into. I have no doubt with more inside midfield depth he can be the A player that matches his ability but yes you would have to say he was B grade this year.
Last year when he played a lot more wing the Giants scored from 23% of his clearances which was higher than any other Giants midfielder and he went at 70% rather than the low sixties. This year a lot of his disposal has been under pressure in and out of traffic after getting a poor handball or not getting any protection. He has disappointed me as well but it more due to us not going as deep in the midfield.

Blinder , he had 7p at 49% eff until he went off in q2, maybe you were thinking another game

Wasting this guy until we get one or two extractors who can get him the ball to advantage.

Shiel is one of those extractors. He has been an insider midfielder, who can also offer a bit on the outside, his entire career. He finished 8th in clearances in 2017 and was top 30 this year (with the highest average at Essendon since 2014).

What he needs is guys willing to block and provide protection so that the likes of he and Merrett can do their thing. Pushing him to the outside would really waste his abilities.

Been something we've been crying out for for years. The last bloke who did it probably was Hocking, it's amazing that it still hasn't been addressed. Clarke has it in him, not sure who else has shown it though, which is a real indictment.

That too.
I see a perfect midfield of him in the centre bounce with two bigger bodies who will extract/block/tackle, etc.
Plus a ruck who can deliver to them

Engine room needs some work.

Begley could potentially be that guy but AFL midfield is a bit too quick for him at the moment, seems to get a bit mixed up in traffic when he plays seniors.

He's got the big body for it but nothing else. Lacks awareness, can't find the pill and when he does his disposal is horrible.
