Player Watch #9: Jack Steele – traded from St Kilda

Honestly don't mind this at all, it's low risk moderate reward. It's only really Viney and Steele that are pure inside mids with no ability to play elsewhere, and pending injuries/form, there might only be one of them playing on any given week.

Still plenty of room to rotate more versatile players through the centre square. Koz, Riv, Windsor, Langford, should all see some time in the middle. Chin, Lindsay and Culley possibly as well. Without Clayton, Trac and Goodwin playing favourites there is going to be ample opportunity.

You can definitely argue that we don't need him, but it's so much better than another year of Clayton plodding around and being too fragile to be dropped to VFL

Did Richo LIE to Jack Steele????

Concerning that StKilda kicked out the Captain of their club for onfield football reasons.
Promising that Melbourne were so content that after his medical they would give him an extension to 3 years.

Steele replacing Oliver in the middle.
Rivers replacing Petracca in the middle.
(More time for Langford too who kicks goals NOT so many points like Petracca)

I'm happy with the pick up but it's understandable that some supporters aren't to thrilled with a guy essentially getting the boot from a pretty mediocre side. For me it's Oliver for Steele. Oliver was always going to get the boot why not replace him with a player that's basically the same level of experience. It's better than nothing. We can say Steele isn't great but it's not like Oliver was setting the world alight either. Steele atleast brings some leadership.

side note: how did we allow Spargo to pollute David Neitz's #9.

Was thinking the same thing after watching that video. Gross decision by the club. Give #9 to Langford.

Not sure theres a single number on the list that hasn't been tainted over the past 20 years.

My man Lambo just promoting himself to picking the numbers :coolv1:

**** me there is no bigger alpha in the sport right now just demolishing everyone who gets in his way gets me fired up
Terrific use of ":coolv1:".

Davey into Jeffy into Koz.
I'd say that's pretty good going

Leoncelli before them into the 90s.

Could make a good thread best and worst of numbers of players in each number. Maybe the last 25 years. For example number 9 Neitz worst Spargo, to be honest there was only Trengove in between. I'm too young to remember anyone before Neitz.

As someone who grew up in the Neitz era and i know Trenners was in between (rather forgettable sorry Trenners). But going from Neitz, Tough, Tall, Captain with a major presence around the footy club to little Spargo was quite a shift in that number and I'm one of those people that prefers players forge their own journeys in the jumper, but even i found it quite a difference

#2 Did seem to be almost exclusively a midfielders number before JVR. But Tulip, Stingers and Chunk all wore it well (although Armstrong was in there for a little bit)

I sometimes felt that Oliver and Viney were a bit too similar and got in the way of each other, so replacing one with a similar version is a bit strange, especially as the messaging was that Oliver had to learn other skills to keep his spot in the team.

But yeah, wait and see I guess.

I feel the same. Oliver/Viney didnt really work last few years. Maybe Steele is a lot more defensive than Oliver and the coach will have a major impact here as well. Time will tell. At least Steele seems like a ripper bloke off field and will probably move straight into a leadership role.

The public narrative around why we traded Oliver was clearly bullshit though.
