Still pinching myself.

Fair dinkum if you did some sort of #4 for #1 or #2 trade it'd have been with view to getting LDU.

Still "can't believe he was still there at our pick". Seriously.

Nothing is guaranteed but if everything went right this kid is a burger with the lot.
Him and Simpkin sliding is just reward from The Footy Gods for us never being a tanking club.

"Time will tell" but the potential is still there to be a best case scenario outright.

A Kelly trade would've likely had 4+23 or 4+2018 1st at its core.

LDU and Walker or LDU and a 2nd LDU equivalent might yet meet or exceed Kelly's value.

We'll see.
If lever demanded 12 + 2018 first 4+23 for Kelly would have been robbery. I think we've gone down the better path. Pykie had quite a good post about the value of staying down low and getting a good core of kids together over a number of years. LDU and someone like Rankine to play together with Simpkin, Ahern, Garner, McDonald etc is a much better outcome than just Kelly and the beauty is that it doesn't exclude us from having another crack at Kelly in 2019 with a whole stable of potential stars at hand.

If we had got Kelly other teams could have hard tagged him and it would have been a nothing step.

Some how I don't think we will need Kelly . He didn't want to come to us screw him . I got a feeling about LDU and Gordon .. Also Hartung . Kelly can stay put he missed out on the big bucks and he will miss out on a flag with the Roos ..

With no ill will towards Kelly, but think he may have missed his big payday.
By 2020 I expect our 'young' crop to have improved enough to warrant a bigger share of the salary cap and any offer to Josh would be significantly reduced.
GWS will continue to have salary cap issues and will make an 'unders' offer.
Would think only a third club would be willing to get near the original offer. Would he leave GWS for a club other than us?
None of these three scenarios would be ideal for him.

The problem with getting Kelly in 2017 is it would have cost us 1st round pick in 2017 and 2018, he would have taken us up the ladder, how far? Who knows, but we wouldn't have had a great look at early talent so our midfield would have been pretty much what it has been + Kelly.

Kelly signing for 2 years isn't really a statement that he is going to be a one club player, to me it seems like it indicates he would like to move to us but GWS is in the window currently. We also need a fair bit of work.

Getting LDU in 2017 plus we will likely have a good look at an elite player in 2018 as well, then the Kelly circus goes again in 2019 and if we go for him again it will likely be 2019 & 2020 1st round picks if he has maintained his form or got better.

But, by then we would hopefully have LDU on 30-40 games, Mr 2018 on 20 odd games plus Cunnington, McDonald and Preuss (with some solid expereience) in the middle, Kelly would be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself. That would be the kind of midfield talent we haven't had since the mid to late 70s. If you have 3 elite ball users in the middle plus cunners and mcdonald for grunt then that would be a premiership calibre midfield.

I think the Kelly/Martin combo might have been a similar boost, but I think it was for the best that Kelly dropped out of the running when Martin did because it might have just put us back into no-man's land.

From the last game of the season vs. brisbane, i got a feeling from watching at a pub that mcdonald will be a feature as a midfielder towards the future. Also there has been sayings of simpkins and garner also moving into a midfield role. This is a great development as it will free up Ziebell to play mainly as a marking medium forward and get others invovled like Zurhaar and a returned M.Wood from injury. This will make our midfield very dynamic instead of the one paced version from 2010. Add this to the likes of Ryan Clarke we discovered in 2017, Dumont's continued development, LDU in 2018 plus X player development, our midfield by the start of 2020 will be quite dynamic.

This x100.

Just Kelly probably would have been the worst case scenario tbh.

Kelly in 2019 will cost most likely 2 first rounders.
Kelly in 2020 will cost us nothing as he will be an RFA.

I don’t get why he didn’t sign a 3 year deal to allow him to come to the club for free.

Do we really want to give up these picks? I would rather her wait another year and get him for free.

Anyways hopefully by 2019 we realise that we already have a good midfield and that we do not pay overs in picks and contract for him. I feel we will need some salary cap to retain our players.

Because he's not in it for the NMFC. This gives him the best opportunity to play GWS off vs NMFC.
Like virtually all young players he is heavily influenced by his manager, who has a serious vested interest in not rocking the boat with any clubs.

Remember, Josh is only 22. Imagine yourself as a 22 year old trying to evaluate the biggest business decision you are ever likely to make in your life? It would be an intimidating scenario.
