Still would have preferred a few other players over Cripps, watching Dumont slip to 30 was criminal.

Anyone else notice the irony of this statement (in hindsight)

Wait what, Carlton has developed one of there own kids
3 of our own have picked up the rising star nominations in the last 2 years... but the question in my mind is... how many times can he get nominated this year?

What happens if he absolutely destroys the filth this week? Does he get another nod?

I think it was more a case of "no assembly required". He pretty much came to the club with all the tools in hand, and hired his own running coach during the off season. It still does nothing for our credibility as player developers.
We need to lock him up long term ASAP. The bean counters need to work out what this kid is going to be worth in a few years and make sure they're willing to pony up. West Coast will undoubtedly make a massive play for him at some point. Try to take him home and pair him up with his cousin.

One nomination per year, per player.
He'll now be in the running along with 22 other players for the award.

If Byrne gets on the field and stays there, we'll likely have a second nomination coming our way....kid can play.
Can't see anyone else other than possibly Smith coming into contention, though.

Yeah I think you just need to be nominated once, but now his progress is tracked and if he continues to tear it up through the season, he's a good chance, though I've no idea how they score it. We want him to tear it up anyway, the RS would just e icing on the cake.

Come on Crippster! Win this thing!!

It was quite noticeable in the VFL last season that whenever it looked like Paddy was spent physically, he found a way to will himself through to the end of games. Mentally, I think he is one of the stronger players at the club. Heading towards Judd territory.
Which is a great thing, because I wonder if this has perhaps been another weak area in our recruiting (mental strength/willpower).

A powerful young kid with very good footy smarts and clearance ability combined with the fact he's got such a good head on his shoulders that he hires his own running coach and has already demonstrated his ability to will himself through pain and fatigue... I don't see how we could have gone for anyone else.

Absolutely right and even with a broken leg. Judd, Curnow and Cripps.

It's great to now see the likes of Graham, Walsh, DVR, Smith etc pushing themselves almost as hard.
We finally have some good young leaders but Cripps is right at the top of that tree.

I said it in our podcast last night...I think the example that Cripps is setting (in hiring his own running coach etc) can only have a good influence on the rest of the team, regardless of their age. Soon enough the other lads won't want to be shown up by him, and they'll either move on or put in as much effort as he does.

I don't want to sound like the kind of poster to pump up one player by bagging out another, but I'd love it if Menzel could show the same work ethic and sheer dedication to teamwork as Crippa has already.

I'm not a fly on the wall so I don't actually know how Menz goes about his training and the like, but I get the impression at least on-field he could push himself harder to go with that ridiculous amount of talent.

Menzel is a beautiful player and he doesn't have to be a Cripps, Judd or Curnow................not everyone can be.

I just get the feeling that Menzel does crave a little attention but he'll have to be the one who demands that attention and not expect others to help him along. Team first attitude must be in place and maybe it already is. Let's see from here on in.

We have him locked to 2017. And all the vision I see of him shows him to be a very happy young man with zero go home factor.

Menzel has to improve his work rate and influence the game a lot more than he currently does.

2017 is not long term. If we can extend his contract for another couple of years early on, we won't have to pay as much (at the moment he isn't attracting the kind of attention that Boyd did, or that Howe is now getting), but at some point he is going to be a very expensive player.
He might be happy for now, but things change. Money talks. Playing closer to home, with your cousin, for a team that you followed as a kid. He could start to miss his parents, or they could miss him and get in his ear about coming home. Many variables. We need to keep him happy. Give him the players he needs to succeed. Give him opportunities to win flags and Brownlows and make going home look as unattractive as it can possibly be.

Not sure you know what the word irony means?

Dumont actually finally got a sub game on the weekend and did some really good things in his short time.
