People need to understand that Cripps has had a great deal of success by monstering other under 18s. Next year he's going to be up against men and his strength which is his size, strength and power wont be a great advantage for him against men for some time. Don't expect him to be an immediate AFL star but rather an eventual star. In time when his running has improved and he has a mature hardened body he will be monstering other AFL players and doing what he has done in the U18s at AFL level but that will not be for some time. It will be an excellent effort if he plays AFL next year, but I expect next year to be more about improving his running and fitness, learning the game/game style, learning to play forward and getting used to playing against men and getting a feel for higher tempo footy.
If any of our draftees is going to haven an impact next season it will be Giles. He's a bit like a young Jarrad Waite, but not playing in a shithouse team. Quite capable of slotting into a pocket or flank at either end or playing as a defensive wingman.
Don't forget that Cripps will also get wiser and stronger and hge'll still be bigger than most other AFL mid-fielders.
What that ultimately amounts to, we'll just have to see. Physical attributes aside, the kid has a good head on his shoulders. That's half the battle.

Essendon board.Still would have preferred a few other players over Cripps, watching Dumont slip to 30 was criminal.

29 times Dumont was overlooked. Not just once by us @ 13.

Rogers also appears to be selecting mids who can rotate through the flanks rather than trying to recruit flankers who can rotate through the middle (and fail at it)Different head recruiter who has the final say.
You do realize that right?
Rogers appears to favour self starters over the players Hughes picked. In terms of drive and intensity, they appear to be more like Kreuzer than Hampson.
I am nearly 50 and I still dont know the full extent of my strength... mind you, I have never had to really push myself to find out.And most importantly, Cripps himself admitted on that AFL.com.au video he is still unsure of how to use his strength & size which means maybe he wasn't just rag dolling the other 18 year olds and that once he can harness his strength he will be even more imposing.
I know, I'd love to pump up a sharks player, just a few SA boys that looked good and the WA coach was rather high on Acres as well.Overlooking one of your own LM.
That's what criminal.

Essendon board.
They needed another midget.

Personally I see things differently.
From the first round of selections I believe Cripps and possibly Aish will make the most impact next year. Cripps physicality and work in traffic mean that we'll be looking to bring him in at the first possible chance. He's quite special in that he started his U/16 career as a 170cm really tough scragger and emerged from the U/18's as a 190cm monster. From all accounts as a junior he had to be tough to fit in due to being undersized and has kept the little-guy mentality even now as a 6 foot 3, 90 kilo brick shithouse. During WA's games I thought he was the best inside midfielder and the best player behind Sheed. Was absolutely delighted when the late mail came in suggesting we'd switched from McCarthy to Cripps, as I initially hoped he may make his way into the 3rd round, but the recruiters were smart this year and realized someone would pounce.
Cripps is probably the closest player to Wines in the draft in that he's big enough to hold his own from the start of next year, but will be even scarier once they've reached their own peak physical strength. Extractors and clearance winners tend to make the best immediate impact at AFL level, as demonstrated by Crouch, Wines, O'Meara and co. Naturally reads the tap well and will be even better now that he will be receiving top-level ruck work from Kreuzer and Warnock. Will also benefit from receiving no attention next year in the Carlton midfield and will most likely be allowed to play totally unaccountable footy. Furthermore, he protects the space over the ball really well and is big enough to move players off their line, meaning he's a great candidate to help protect Judd and Murphy in the clinches and help break tags.
Ofcourse, it entirely depends on other tangibles as to how quickly he gets a game. The pressure is now on Graham, Temay, Buckley, Lucas and Menzel to have big preseasons and clamp down on a spot, because I have a suspicion Giles and Holman will be pressing claims VERY strongly. Giles may in fact be a Round 1 prospect if we want to use him as a rebounding defender or third tall forward, maybe a little longer if he's being groomed to take over the CHB job and release Hendo. Also think this puts pressure on White, Watson etc.
I also think that both him and Holman might be teaching the rest of the blokes how to tackle in a few years, and am so delighted that our recruiting staff decided to draft players with a bit of mongrel this year.

Looking at the footage on Cripps, he looks like he could walk right into the AFL, just like Ollie Wines.
I have the feeling that if his name wasn't Cripps (like homesick Jamie) and he was a Victorian, he would have been snapped up before the likes of Lennon, Freeman and Salem.
Like Wines?
This pick backs up why I didn't want to trade 13 for Adams. Thought we would be able to find a big mid with our first selection. Compared to Adams, he's a man mountain. Appears to have more character and maturity than the Collingwood six footer who belted someone.
Liked the sound of a Dumont, but his highlights were a bit boring and vanilla like others noted. Cripps vision, agility and ability to find a receiver is terrific. Nice turning circle for a player that big. Looks a physical version of Pendlebury with his poise and size in traffic. Doesn't bomb the ball like Robinson.
Would love to ask Wells why they passed on Dumont.I know, I'd love to pump up a sharks player, just a few SA boys that looked good and the WA coach was rather high on Acres as well.
Of course you have to back in the recruiters and I hope I'm wrong.
