If Cripps was to have a blinder this week and for Hogan to have another quiet one, it will really test the integrity of the panel. We'll know by Sunday.

Cripps should smash it anyway. Early in the year it was 'Cripps or Heeney' and that was a close run thing, Hogan was playing consistently good (but not great) footy. Then Hogan had a couple of good games after Heeney got injured, and the media started crapping on about him. In the meantime Cripps is still accumulating Brownlow vote-worthy games.

Hogan has been great in half a dozen games and good in another 10. Cripps has been great in probably 15 games and good in another 2 or 3, and he missed a few early in the year. Can't remember him having a poor game tbh

No way that will happen. He has already changed numbers once. Plus thousands of supporters have already got the number 5 jumper because of Judd. The club would miss out on a fair bit of money

Its not going to happen, but he's one player at the club that deserves it.

If Tim Watson was on it, I'd say Cripps would be a shoe-in.

I understand that it can be harder for Hogan to get the ball when his team is getting flogged versus a midfielder, but I feel some people (particularly people on the BF Main Board, not surprisingly) all too easily dismiss just what Cripps has been able to do.

He's a 20 year old, first full year of AFL footy and still physically filling out, able to dominate the contest on any given day but even has shown the ability to get the job done and be remarkably consistent even when most of our better mids go down with injury, not to mention he's received hard tags. He's already putting far more senior players on their arses like they're ragdolls.

Even the great Christopher Judd could struggle now and then with hard tags and little support around him, it's to be expected, but here we have a kid who's just about carrying the midfield against the odds. Not that he should have to, but he's showing what he's made of.

The difference between Cripps and Hogan in my opinion is this;

Hogan is doing Great things for a CHF his age. Almost always takes the best defender and is at the level of most good key forwards in the comp.

Cripps is doing things to a level which no midfielder at any age has ever done. I have never seen a top 2-3 player in the comp (Pendlebury)go to another player to curb his influence. never. Let alone a 20 y.o. with 18 games under his belt.

That's the equivalent of Buddy Franklin going down back to stop Hogan.

Yes that's right, I meant to imply that but indeed, it does add to the point that Cripps has been getting great midfielder numbers even in a depleted (and bad) side with limited support or other star mids to take the heat off him.

Watson only averaged more contested possessions and clearances in his doped up Brownlow year. Even then only just and only because of MM running 2 or more taggers through the middle.

Why are these people called 'experts', when how they judge the rising star will be anything other than their performances this season?

Of course Cripps won't win the award. Why?

- 'Because Hogan is a KPF, that is a tougher position'.
In that case, Tom Boyd would be another favourite for the award. And he would have more of a chance than Cripps.

i don't rate those players because of where they get the ball, i rate them because of what they do with it. There is no point winning contested football if you do nothing with it. A guy getting uncontested football can be just as effective with his disposal as a guy getting contested football

it doesn't matter where you get it, it only matters how you use it

i love Patty Cripps, but my original comment stands as with more congestion brings more contested football for all players to win and the stats would reflect that for all players

if you have have 15 players around the ball giving off quick fire handballs to get rid of it as they are tackled, they are cheap contested numbers being added to a players tally

and contested possessions often don't add up because if you look in the stats, sometimes a player has 23 disposals with 15 contested possessions and 10 uncontested.............where are the extra 2 disposals gone ?

it is because a contested possession isn't actually a disposal and some media get that stat wrong

Theres a reason why Ablett and Judd are the two best players of the past decade and its not because they were the best users of the ball. Fyfe is the current game's best and his disposal is a long way from the best in the comp but they were the best at winning their own ball and dominating clearances.
