it doesn't matter where you get it, it only matters how you use it
i love Patty Cripps, but my original comment stands as with more congestion brings more contested football for all players to win and the stats would reflect that for all players
if you have have 15 players around the ball giving off quick fire handballs to get rid of it as they are tackled, they are cheap contested numbers being added to a players tally

No idea... I heard some sort of noise from Australia while I was in Ireland...but can she sing?
Except they don't- Selwood, Priddis and Kennedy all have similiar CP average numbers over the past 5 years.
What Cripps is achieving is unprecedented for a 20 game, 20yo and it is not because of more congestion, its because he is a very special talent. Top10 in the league for both CP and clearances, regardless of additional numbers.
Players that win their own ball are more important than outside runners because of their greater ability to influence the game. As much as Id love a Gaff or I Smith - they are the icing, Cripps is the cake, candles, the party-hats, presents, band, beer and piñata![]()
The last 10 years the footy has been congested, ever since the Swans started the flood style of play
What players do with the ball influences games, not where they win it
There will always be congested football, but it is no good winning it if you can't get it to a team mate
the amount of times i see a player get the ball from a centre clearance and handball it to a team mate who then gets tackled and another bounce start is just crazy these days. A player can get 3-4 handballs in the space of 5 metre's and the ball doesn't leave an area for 3-4 minutes.
like i said, congested footy means there will be more contested stats added on to a players numbers
a player handballing blindly out of a pack so he doesn't get tackled, that is counted as a contested possession, also a player grabbing the ball and being tackled straight away and a ball up occurs....that is also counted as a contested possession, even though he didn't kick or handball it
i didn't discount anything at all. There will always be top 10 lists but they are not top 10 just because of contested stats, it is what they do with the ball that makes them eliteI guess we'll have to disagree but why discount what Cripps can do because other less skilled players can't. I don't often see Cripps handball blindly or give off a hospital pass - his ability to win the ball is already elite but his vision and ability to stand in the tackle, hold the ball in the air and wait for the right option is exceptional. If he couldn't win the ball to start with he would be a much less effective player.
The best contested players I listed earlier - Fyfe, Dangerfield, Kennedy, Priddis, Selwood, Ablett are in the top 10 best mids in the game - if they didn't win contested footy they wouldn't be rated so highly.

I agree. His vision is already i.m.o. better than those 4.I guess we'll have to disagree but why discount what Cripps can do because other less skilled players can't. I think you're underselling the importance of contested footy. There is more contested footy these days which will be reflected in more contested stats. By the same token, more contested footy means you need players that are good at it.The last 10 years the footy has been congested, ever since the Swans started the flood style of play

Yep, it's guys like Cripps, that get down and dirty, that give the uncontested possession winners the time and space to be able to use the ball properly.I think you're underselling the importance of contested footy. There is more contested footy these days which will be reflected in more contested stats. By the same token, more contested footy means you need players that are good at it.
I understand what you're saying about what a player does with it is more important than simply winning contested possesion, but the two aren't mutually exclusive. The best players do both well.
It's also much more difficult to get effective disposals away in packs. Compare Cripps and Fyfes DE - both 69.2%
Isaac Smith likes thisOutside mids don't have a game without players like Cripps.
Ive noticed Cripps has lower time on ground percentages than our other mids (which is understandable at his age) but given the sub rule is gone next year, I really hope he takes a big step forward with his fitness over the pre-season. We'll need him to spend more time on the ground and he does fatigue with his running at the moment.
Have every faith in the guy's professionalism to get it done though!
Yeah good point. Will need his goalkicking shoes on next year for sure.I suspect we'll see more of him resting in the forward line and hopefully kicking plenty of goals
What do Kennedy, Priddis, Dangerfield and Mundy have in common?
Those 4 players are the only players in 2015 with more clearances, tackles and CPs than 20yo, 22 gamer Patty Cripps who started the season with 3 games to his name (including sub).
