I think you're underselling the importance of contested footy. There is more contested footy these days which will be reflected in more contested stats. By the same token, more contested footy means you need players that are good at it.

I understand what you're saying about what a player does with it is more important than simply winning contested possesion, but the two aren't mutually exclusive. The best players do both well.

It's also much more difficult to get effective disposals away in packs. Compare Cripps and Fyfes DE - both 69.2%
that is my whole point and why there are more contested numbers than ever before

Just saw who is on the selection panel for the Rising Star Award. Darcy, Tredrea, Richardson, Frawley, Jakovich. Crippsy got no hope.

You forgot KB!

NRS selection panel:

Gill McLachlan, Mark Evans, Kevin Sheehan, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Glen Jacovich, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson & Warren Tredrea

That selection panel ensures cripps will have no chance of winning.

Time to lay those bets!

I haven't heard a KPP commentating yet that doesn't think Hogan should win it, and there are like 5-6 KPP/KPF on the selection panel. I honestly think Cripps has got little chance.

TAC future stars have reported Jesse Hogan kicked a bag in rnd 4 vs Bitchmond

Kicked 3 today with i50 delivery good enough that Hendospud would have had 3-4. Crippa ain't got a chance.

Regardless of the outcome of the Rising Star award, what we do know is that Cripps will be a much better, more influential player across his career than Hogan will be & that's good enough for me.

Do we? Hogan looks set to be the premier forward in the comp. I'd be very annoyed if Cripps loses to Hogan as he has had a better year in my opinion, but over their careers... nobody can predict the future. Both are shaping up to be in the top few players of the next decade.

Cripps to win Brownlow before Hogan wins Coleman

Nah, just needs a couple pre-seasons and half a season without Murph not taking any 3 votes off him.

Hogan will be competing with the likes of Boyd, McCartin & Patton to be the premier forward in the comp. Cripps has already demonstrated enough to suggest he will be at a Judd/Diesel Williams level within the next couple of years. He will have more damaging 30+ disposal games across his career than Hogan will kick bags of goals across his career.

Has Patton had a proper run at it yet? Seemed pretty impressive in the couple games I've seen him. Also no one's mentioned Cameron, who'll more likely be the dominant forward of the next decade.
Not getting my hopes up on Crippa taking the rising star. Judd lost to Riewoldt, I'd be happy if these two kids had half the careers of those two (well, Cripps at least).

I think Hogan is pretty much a guarantee to win the rising star, everybody and their dog seems to be going with the 'he plays the toughest position on the field' line, despite the AFL coaches saying that an inside midfielder is equally the most important position as a goal kicking forward. And Cripps's number as a 20 year old inside midfielder are staggering

ha, the prescient biased fan ;)

And Hogan will be the next Carey... it's looking like it will be he and Jeremy Cameron duelling as the best forwards. We all know how good Cripps is looking like becoming, just like everybody knows how good Hogan should be. Reading the thread on the main board is an embarrassment of Carlton and Melbourne fans scrambling to find fault and dismiss the others achievements. Would be nice to be above that here. Both players will be future stars and players that both their teams are building the foundations of their teams around.

He's the best young kid I've seen at our club in 46 years as a supporter & we've had some good ones. To be achieving the output he has in his first full season at the club (last year was ruined by his broken leg) goes beyond anything that has gone before him.
