Was just watching some old NAB Cup games last night and I was thinking, man I miss those times when pre-season had super goals. It made what seemed like a trivial affair into one which actually had some excitement to it. That was pre-season though, and perhaps just the novelty of it made it seem cool. But it made me think of what it would be like in the regular season.
You'd have players like Dangerfield stampeding down the open corridor bangs it from the square and bam, you've got 9 points. But aside from it's novelty, it would actually make sense in the current game.
Forwards would be aiming to stream out of the 50 to take a mark outside the 50 metres, the way forwards traditionally played. This might alleviate some of the congestion inside 50 that the AFL is raving about. Also, it actually gives purpose to the 50m mark. Would possibly create an entire class of FWDs who are 'super kickers'. Could see the return of Rocca-like players.
It would open up a game to so many opportunities, where players are not only playing the game, but actually thinking about it e.g: Do I kick it deep into the 50 to Hoskin-Elliot for the (more than) certain 6 pointer or do I pass it off to Benny Brown for the ̶Z̶o̶o̶p̶e̶r̶ 9 pointer (we wont be calling it that).
Tradition aside, there's just so many up-sides to this rule and with the AFL's recent farce of completely reworking the great game, this rule change I believe should be welcomed, as it changes the game for the better but doesn't completely reinvent the wheel.
