Was just watching some old NAB Cup games last night and I was thinking, man I miss those times when pre-season had super goals. It made what seemed like a trivial affair into one which actually had some excitement to it. That was pre-season though, and perhaps just the novelty of it made it seem cool. But it made me think of what it would be like in the regular season.

You'd have players like Dangerfield stampeding down the open corridor bangs it from the square and bam, you've got 9 points. But aside from it's novelty, it would actually make sense in the current game.

Forwards would be aiming to stream out of the 50 to take a mark outside the 50 metres, the way forwards traditionally played. This might alleviate some of the congestion inside 50 that the AFL is raving about. Also, it actually gives purpose to the 50m mark. Would possibly create an entire class of FWDs who are 'super kickers'. Could see the return of Rocca-like players.

It would open up a game to so many opportunities, where players are not only playing the game, but actually thinking about it e.g: Do I kick it deep into the 50 to Hoskin-Elliot for the (more than) certain 6 pointer or do I pass it off to Benny Brown for the ̶Z̶o̶o̶p̶e̶r̶ 9 pointer (we wont be calling it that).

Tradition aside, there's just so many up-sides to this rule and with the AFL's recent farce of completely reworking the great game, this rule change I believe should be welcomed, as it changes the game for the better but doesn't completely reinvent the wheel.

Alot of people will scream 'leave it alone' but it's not a horrible concept. Also means teams will have to keep a deep defender to stop goals being rolled through from 55.

Would love to see the return of the specialist forward aswell. Blokes who can mark and kick it a mile would be back

It's basically like a 3 pointer in basketball.

The main problem, the way I see it, is that any basketball player can make a 3 point shot. Some might be more accurate, but any basketball player has a reasonable good chance of sinking one from outside the 3 point line.

While sure, many AFL plays can kick a goal from beyond the arc, many cannot. The 9 point system would advantage big kicks like Franklin, Hawkins, Walker etc. Swans would win every time haha. And Eddie Betts etc would never kick a 9 pointer. I mean, it's already an advantage to be able to kick from out there, makes a forward more dangerous, 9 points would be too much. Plus many inside 50 goals are just as tough to get.

So for that reason alone, not a good idea.

Since when did traditional forwards lead up past the 50m mark? That puts you out near the centre square - in the middle of the traffic.
The old time great full forwards were stay at home players. That’s what we miss - the one on one contests.
Plugger, Dunstall, Hudson, McKenna, Ablett all usually had one on ones or lead from the square out to 20/30 or maybe 40 m at best.
If you reward goals from outside 50 with 9 points, then full forwards will not be kicking them. In fact they will feature less in our game.

For those that don't know, Hungry Jack's gave out a free Whopper on Wednesday if an eagle kicked a goal outside 50 every home game. Ground lit up with HJ's ads etc.

Bit of a buzz when it happened. "Ok Fam, had to take out a 2nd mortgage to get tix to the game, but we're eating on Wednesday!"

Every player in a cricket team can gets to bat, but not everyone can hit it that far over the fence.

Should Cricket get rid of the six because not every player can hit that far, while in the NBA everyone could possibly make a 3 pointer?

Oh I see ..... NBA has a 3 point line so the AFL feels it MUST have a 9 point line. I don't know why we call it Aussie Rules anymore, just call it United Nations Rules. I remember when we used to be able to brag about the game being "uniquely Australian".
You're just jealous all the Hawks' quarterbacks and point guard suck.

Hitting a six doesn't require the strength, size, kinetic energy or whatever that kicking over 50 does. Partly a skill thing. Not so much the case with kicking over 50, though it can play a role.

Plus it's already part of cricket. Footy has been fine without a 9 pointer. Gimmicky imo, but don't mind it for preseason or some exhibition games.
