Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

You’ve got to wonder if getting a couple of late career Matthew Boyd type seasons across half back is out of the question for Cotchin. Boyd was tremendous in that role and I think Cotchin could do something like that very effectively. Vlastuin probably plays a similar role now, it could release him for other duties.

Forward pocket maybe

Prestia Pickett Graham Bolton Ross

I don’t see the need for him to be midfield majority of the time anymore

If and when Ross regains that 2019 form he may pushCotch out of side. I can't see Cotch doing anything else than play middle. Every position on the ground requires uber fitness.

I like Ross , I think he has a lot of good qualities including winning the footy . however there are very few players who know when the game is in the balance and are able to swing it in their clubs favour with clean skills and weave in and out of traffick and make people look slow . Hird had the ability but Cotchins ability to do it at the level he does is unparalleled .
Ross has never shown that ability and whilst Cotchin is able to maintain that ability he ain’t going anywhere and shouldn’t .

Cotch does things that turn matches, including finals. That is supreme. I love Ross, but ain't no Trent.

He used to. He’s ageing and was never quick to big with. I’m tipping this is his last year.
Still does ! If his form holds up to what it was last year and he was to retire , he’d probably be the most in form player to retire .
Gary Ablett jnr wasn’t at Cotchins current level 2 years prior to leaving Gold Coast.
He can sit on the bench on just come
On when the game needs turning for the next 3-4 years .
I don’t think he will but he could .

Will be turning 31 around mid season, so could be his last, When's he out of contract?
End of 22. Getting hamstring injuries but managing it well ATM. Need a massive injury for him to call it a day early. Inspirational leader. I hope Ross gets some games. I think he will come in for Graham when injured.

I reckon Houli unfortunately is likely to cop some injuries which might see Edwards spend time off half back which will open up space for the likes of Ross to stamp their spot .

Is Houli training or in rehab group? I can’t recall seeing him since they’ve returned

I like the cut of your jib. I'm looking for an intern as i can't keep up with the demand. Pays $0/hour, 12 hour days.

That is doing Marlion Pickett a shocking disservice. The correct proportion is Marlion Pickett 231:1 v Collingwood FC. You are comparing a Grand Final winning legend here with an organisation that specialises in failing to win Grand Finals under almost any circumstances.

We need a more sophisticated graph to tell the real picture. I did some research on this and Collingwood first and reserve teams combined have won one single Grand Final in the last 45 years - the 1990 AFL Grand Final. That is two teams, two entities who have won one Grand Final in 45 years between them. Combined they are currently winning Grand Finals at the rate of one per 89 seasons(their Reserves didn’t get to lower their colours in 2020.)

Marlion jumps off a plane and once he starts playing, in short order wins a VFL flag, AFL flag, gets robbed of a second VFL flag by the fact there is no VFL season, but butters up beautifully with another AFL flag as a reasonable consolation prize. He is officially fuming the VFL season was cancelled in 2020. As a result, he made an executive decision to play so many senior matches he would not have qualified for the reserves Grand Final, but things could have been so different….

So the calculations get a bit difficult here, but Marlion only had a maximum of 7 matches in 2019, and 21 matches including finals in 2020. So from 28 available matches, he has won three Grand Finals. 28 matches when you consider a full AFL/VFL season plus finals is on average 24 matches, represents 1.16 seasons played for 3 Grand Final wins. Collingwood Seniors and Reserves have had exactly 89 seasons available to them since 1976.

Collingwood seniors and reserves Grand Final winning strike rate since the completion of the 1976 season: 1.12%

M Pickett Esq Grand Final winning strike rate, derived from winning three Grand Finals in 1.16 seasons: 259%

So Marlion is currently running at precisely 2.59 Grand Finals won per full season played. 😍😍😍😍

Collingwood seniors and Reserves are running at 0.0112 Grand Finals won per season played. 😂😂😂😂

2.59/0.0112 = 231.

Ergo, Marlion Pickett is winning Senior and Reserve AFL/VFL Grand Finals at 231 times the rate of the Collingwood Football Club. Can we have your CRAY computer update the graph to reflect this more accurate picture please? 😁😁

Only 251 games, so needs to play into 2023 to reach 300 games. Missing +/-20 games early in his career hasn't helped. I want a whole bunch of Tigers from this era to hit that mark - Cotch, Dusty, Riewoldt, Edwards. We were ripped off when Richo didn't hit that mark and Knights was retired by Frawley. Campbell fell three games short but he chose to end it there and I wasn't that upset by it either.
