Will Hayward
Spritely Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward enjoyed a rocketing start to his career as he became the 11th-youngest player in the AFL era to reach 50 career goals in 2018. The 2016 draftee’s nippy pace and cunning goal awareness have made him a dangerous option in coach John Longmire’s forward line. A broken jaw and a persistent hip injury limited Hayward to just 12 goals in 13 senior games in 2019, but the South Australian is attacking the 2020 campaign on the back of his first full pre-season. Don’t be surprised if the exciting Swan finds himself on a wing this year.

Will Hayward
DOB: 26 October 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #21, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Walkerville (SA)/North Adelaide (SANFL)

doesn't take alot to teach yourself. I did it and i was far from elite. No excuses for players at this level to be one sided.

Fair point and for the record I agree with that. Just saying plenty of players who are A graders have been one sided

Done a lot of research on him, could play before any other 2016 draftee and is better than Florent.

Possibly, although has anyone got a training update?

Personally Hayward fits an immediate need though.

Hayward not playing the intra and not being named in JLT 1 is somewhat concerning. Haven't heard anything about him being injured?

mcveigh was interviewed at half time on the weekend and said he thinks hayward is going to be the best of our young players.

He has massive potential that is for sure

Hayward finished eighth in the 20m sprint with a time of 2.94 seconds, third in the standing vertical jump with 70cm, and finished joint seventh in the running vertical jump after registering 90cm. A minor foot injury (plantar fasciitis) ruled him out of the 3km time trial and the beep test, but Hayward had hoped to go well. “Before the combine, I did a 10:27 3km trial, and I was hoping for a mid 13 in the beep test” he said.

Below article only about a wk ago (Feb 11 2017) reports him as still having "Draftee Will Hayward is managing a sore foot"

Wonder if its the same injury, plantar fasciitis (over 3 mnths now?). How serious can these get and what complications can there be?

The more i read on him and see of his highlights, the more excited i get! Super talent, very quick (2.94s = with Rohan?) and could be a prodigious goal kicker (still to be proven in afl env of course though his junior highlights shows he outbodied/outjumped bigger bodies). No surprise why mcveigh heaped such high praise on him!

Traditional treatment algorithms usually begin with 6 weeks of consistent and daily icing, stretching, NSAID therapy, strapping and taping, and over-the-counter (OTC) orthoses. Counseling as to activity modification, as well as choice of shoe gear, is important. After 6 weeks, recalcitrant cases should be treated additionally with a night splint and, possibly, an injection, along with the initial regimen for another 6 weeks.

If pain persists, referral to a foot and ankle specialist should be considered. Injection therapy, immobilization in a cast or walker boot, physical therapy, and custom orthotics can be employed under more controlled supervision. For severe recalcitrant cases, surgical intervention may ultimately be required.

Sounds serious

he did remind me a little bit of rohan when i watched his highlights. hopefully he has a better tank and can go through the midfield.

depends how serious it is, Mate had it and he just took NSAID and rolled a golf ball under his arch for a couple weeks. Flares up every now and then. But hes a factory worker so maybe its the boots or hard floors. Fingers crossed its a minor case.
My ex was a podiatrist & I spent my uni days inadvertantly learning a bit about feet just through her studies & talking to all her podiatry friends.

PF is usually related to tightness in the achillies/calf/hamstring. A knee issue or sometimes even tightness in the lower back or a weak core can be a factor too. I think most people would be fairly surprised at what some stretching & flexibility work on the lower body can do for it.

He'll now have access to some good orthotics & most AFL listed players have custom boots these days. I've seen players boots that weren't even the team brand, another brand with the team brand sewn over the top (i.e. the player wanted/needed asics & the team was nike).

He's so young it could simply be an issue with growth as well. Most teenagers will at some point have pain in the feet/shins etc as a result of misaligned/unbalanced muscle tension etc.

If in a years time he's still having issues tho, he's either not followed his preperation as he needed to (stretching etc) or he's one of 25 cases that needs more severe treatment (injections etc).

Apparently has a great forwward IQ, but finds it a bit harder to notch up disposals in the middle - hopefully this will come in due course with an improved tank and fast tracked learning around the likes of hanners/JPK etc. He did start out in the midfield in his earlier days and i thought he did well when thrown in the middle in the nab all stars, but i think he has huge X factor up forward given his speed and athleticism, ability to both mark and crumb for goals not to mention a long penetrative kick. Either way, looks to have the tools to be a game changer type IMO.

Looks like dane swan had a similar injury which took him about a month to get over. They do appear to come in quite varying degrees (2-26wks)

Seems robert harvey/josh kennedy had to employ more unconventional methods to recover:

Can only hope it's not a chronic case for hayward.

I noted club today has some updated photos on training - looks like hayward in the bottom pic?
http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2017-02-23/gallery-back-to-work

Perhaps those attending training may have a better idea of how he's progressing and the impact, if any.
