A bold trade for pick 2

Talk is that Melbourne have been laughed at in every trade meeting they've held in regards to pick 2.

They want a player and a pick. And not just any player; an elite A grader and a first round pick.
Good on them for having a crack but I can't see anyone going for it.

I wouldn't want to lose any more players this off season. Takes time for a team to Gel and to learn how to play together. If we lose any more guys then it puts us too far back IMO.

GWS will take Boyd - it would be a colossal waste of pick 1 to take Aish or someone like that. There are some good picks in this draft but as Lockyer24 said, Jack Martin and Jesse Hogan are already gone leaving a group of mids / running defender types that you're hardly going to sell the house for at this point.

Not worth the silly price Melbourne have put on it.

Pendlebury for Boyd.

I just don't think #2 works for us. Aish will be a very good player, but not worth packaging 10+11 for or worth losing Sidebottom & a pick. Thats what Melbourne would be after. At pick 10 & 11 we can get 2 good midfielders that are not that far off what Aish will bring. For me #2 is not worth another thought.

The number 1 however is a different ball game. Sadly with Franklin gone this is now out of our reach as I think GWS cancelled their plan to trade this after Lance did the dirty on them. Boyd is a different proposition than Aish, he is not a dime a dozen mid.

A deal I would contemplate is Nathan Brown, Blair & pick 11 for the #1. Highly unlikely to get both those players to agree to this. However, it would suit GWS needs, effectively getting two mature experienced bodies & importantly two leaders into their team without losing too much in the draft order where they can still draft a quality kid or trade the pick for more experience. Though it would all depend if they are happy that Patton & Cameron are the future up forward for them. If they looked at a backline of Phil Davis, N. Brown & Heath Shaw they are looking a lot more solid there.

For us we can slot Reid down back again and bring Frost up a spot in the pecking order so Brown can be covered. Blair also is effectively covered with the emergence of J. Thomas, Broomhead, Kennedy and of course Taylor Adams. Losing 3 quality players (effectively best 22) for one is a bit extreme, but would do so for Boyd - would also forget Jesse White pretty quick too if this happened.

Ok....so we've established a trading relationship with GWS now.....so lets give them their pick of 3 of our fringe (Goldy, Caff, Clarke, Frost, Harry, Kmart, etc....) and picks 10 and 11 and get BOYD

Or, like Hine said, pick two quality players this year, wait for next year and get more draft options that won't require us to rely on bold trade moves such as these, in the process losing three or four players from different positions for one player with one position.

They wouldn't even consider that deal, I don't think. Don't get me wrong, I wish they would! I think they would come straight back and say they want Beams or Reid or someone like that. Top picks (especially pick one) have become absurdly overvalued by the teams that hold the pick and claim to have the pick "on the table".

Heard Jay Clark claim that St Kilda offered GWS pick 3 and any player on their list and GWS said no. Granted the Saints list is bloody awful, but it indicates that they want a "star" (and one younger that Riewoldt) or nothing at all.

I know Boyd looks fantastic and I was advocating a big trade for him before Thomas and Shaw left, but circumstances have changed in terms of our playing stocks so I don't think we can afford to lose experienced A-graders. Happy to keep Brown in our side, but I don't think his trade value is huge.

Now cue the Herald Sun announcing some crazy deal we've done for pick one! :D

Look I know your way makes more sense....but sometimes sense just doesn't win the prize. We suffered all year due to a lack of forward presence (besides Cloke) I don't mind Reid up there at all...but players like Boyd come along once in a generation. He has the "presence" of a young Jono Brown and would make everyone at CFC play straighter. Every club will be fighting for those better KPF draftpicks next year. This one is rolled gold and our last chance to get him for 2-5 years. Midfielders are available in every draft....big guns like this young bull come along very infrequently.

Was hopin Shaw and N.Brown for Boyd but i reckon GWS would want Shaw and B.Reid for Boyd. They want guns or key defendersni reckon.Anyway i reckon they would rather offfload Patton before Boyd.
