I posted this in the Suggestions forum, but I think it needs more exposure than it will get there.

Mags
It's time to call your bluff.

One of the problems with the internet is that most people using it are computer users, not experts. With all the hype and bullshit surrounding the internet it's very easy for dickheads like Mags to spout forth bullshit and make people nervous.

Mags no more knows your IP number or ISP than I do and I assure you that I don't know and can't find out.

Time to stop the bullshit Mags. I have no problems with people knowing my ISP or the IP address that I'm using. So the challenge to you Mags, is to tell us all what those details are - and any other info about me that you can devine with your snale oil.

If you can't put up - shut up.

i think most people knew that anyway.

But I always enjoy reading ppl taking shots at Mags.

Well whether Mags has cracked into log for IP addy's on this site is one thing, but let me tell you, even email sent thru yahoo or hotmail for example, leaves it's trail.

A few weeks ago I had problems with some rather 'suspicious' (for want of a better word) email. I rang Yahoo Aus-NZ and the lovely lady there told me how to check the IP of the email and directed me to a site that traces those IP addresses and matches them to ones that have been allocated to ISP's.

In this case, I was able to trace an email from a hotmail account to an ISP in America. Pretty handy that was! Oh and by the way, we had suspected the email had come from a certain part of america, and we were right!

Oh nah not really, Only that your ISP only connects u to big footy.com and saint kilda fan forum.

Thats all i got so far.

Plus i dont go around looking at isp's just for the fun of it!

Someone says shit about me i think i have the right to know dont i?

I'm not talking about email - which carries a history around with it, I'm talking about Mags' repeated boast of 'I've got your isp' or I've got your ip', I'm not sure if he even knows the difference between the two.

I'm an IT professional and nothing gets up my nose more than Carlton supporters - oops, sorry - I got carried away - I mean than dickheads who profess to be able to see all through their magic little monitors.

There are three common ways of of tracing the original address of a posting on a bulletin board.

1. Environment variables are recorded in the system logs when a request for a page is received. IP information is part of the information recorded. The logs are not publicly available and are stored below the root directory of the web site so are not visible to the web. System administrators and approved people only can see this info.

2. The program that runs the board picks up an environment variable from the incoming message and posts it with the message or records it in a log or both. Bluey and anyone else that he authorises have password access to that information, but no-one else does.

3. This is difficult even if you have the equipment. You can trace the call through the high level proxies that sit on the internet and cache pages and direct traffic. You have to know which of the proxies is being used, have access to their logs and be able to synchronise the call through the system. You need to be a federal policeman or belong to the tax department to get this done.

Mags is full of hot air, so don't be sucked in by him. I know you weren't Arch, but there are some who would have been.

Incidentally Mags, I've never been near the St. Kilda forum, didn't know they had one.

Sabre_ac,

Now look what you have done. You added an extra post to your overall total. You should've just edited your post were you placed the wrong smilie!
