A final drawn after extra time: a footy disaster waiting to happen

Don’t know why it’s taken two complete overhauls to get to a ‘solution’ that still isn’t really ideal - 5min each way would be much better than 3.

Literally could’ve just changed the GF to be the same as the extra time system we had for all other finals and be done with it. Instead we have a bunch of heroes in charge that would rather leave an easy legacy than do the hard, sometimes thankless work to actually improve the game over the long term.

If you've played in a footy grand final and have anything left in the tank at the end of the match you're doing it wrong. Players give their absolute all during the game, 5 minutes each way would effectively equate to another 15 minutes of poor quality game time as the players are absolutely stuffed.

I dunno about you but I found the 15min of extra time in the Port v WC final pretty good quality.

A reminder that thankfully, this was changed.

In the event of a tied Finals Series Match, the following procedure shall apply:

1. Goal umpires confirm scores are identical;
2. There is a six-minute break;
3. Teams change ends;
4. Three minutes of Additional Time shall be played, plus time-on;
5. At the end of the first Additional Time period, the siren will sound and teams will immediately change ends without a break;
6. The ball will be bounced (or thrown up) in the centre and a further three minutes of play (plus time-on) will commence;
7. At the conclusion of this period, the siren will sound and the team with the highest score is declared the winner;
8. If scores are still tied, steps 3 – 8 are repeated until a result is determined.

The following shall also apply:

Starting positions
Any Starting Position (6-6-6) warnings are reset for each period of Additional Time.

Interchange cap
Clubs shall receive 10 interchanges for each 2 x 3 minute period. Any leftover interchanges from each period of Additional Time would not carry over into a subsequent period.

The rule is sheer stupidity.

Imagine this situation at the end of the 2nd extra time with Collingwood up by 6 points

Siren goes to say Collingwood win
But the kick occurs before umpires call an end to play. Now it's tied and the sirens gone.

Awkward situation ensures.

Or what about the scoreboard/timekeepers score being incorrect. Period could be extended as they think it's tied. However, 1 team could actually be up by a point. Then the team down kicks a goal.

Scoreboard could say 118-112
Then they change the scoreboard to 118-113

The team on 113 would've actually been up when the 5 minute period ended, however, because the timekeeper was in opinion it was 112, the period was extended and now they lose.

The rule needs to change. Badly.

Wasnt aware of this. Good they changed it, however, it was never communicated to lower leagues. I umpired a qf this year at 1pt and a gf this year with a 6pt margin. Communications were never communicated to the umpires. So we were there at 3/4 time reminding ourselves of ot rules.

Also, Not fond of the 3min halves rather than 5min halves.

3min is so short and its feasible no score can happen. Lengthen it a little.
