So why exactly would we not just play another 5 minutes each way?

You really think Channel 7 would object to having 4 million people watching for 15 minutes more?
Exactly. The ratings for that extra time would be through the roof. WGAF about what Trump tweeted or how many cats were rescued from a tree today. That can wait 20 minutes, I'm sure.

Also, in order to have ET in a Grand Final, they've done away with the game being replayed, ie 120 minutes plus a full week of training. What's an extra 5-10 minutes going to matter when absolutely everything is on the line? Some extra interchanges could be allowed, but otherwise what's the issue?

the issues are completely different.

the drawback is that both teams have scored the same - fine.

but its completely clear to everyone there including players. no countback, no extra time. nothing vague or unfair.

i am not even a big supportr of this idea - its only a half assed suggestion. but the faults you find with it are not that valid
The fault being that the game has fundamentally not been won?

Why not penalty shots like in soccer?

Best of six shots, if tied then first team to miss.

Fist six shots directly in front 30 meters out.
If still tied then increase the distance by 50m. Six shots.
If still tied next six shots on a tight angle. 3 shots on each side.
No player can kick twice until all players had their kick.

So would teams take out their best kickers from start for the easy shots or save them?

No siren and players being none the wiser to next score wins is a blight on the game.

Golden goal doesn’t work either due to the fact it would be possible to win with a lower score.

Here’s a novel idea. Play another 5 minute period of extra time. If still tied after that, play another. Play them indefinitely until a winner is decided. It’s the only way that truly works.
Agreed. How much longer would it really go? Even three sets of it takes less than an hour. Imagine how amazing it would be

Shocking. It’s a team sport and penalties are an individual thing. They’re only required in soccer because you can go hours without scoring. Not the case in Aussie Rules.

And you have the not so great spectacle of poorer teams parking the bus, in the hope they can fluke through on penalties

Sounds like a game of DONKEY

Im not talking about a 10 second job - im talking about a couple of seconds where the ball is in dispute - where the players push and maul them over the line

Also a free kick in that context

Was at a vafa womens finals game today where the rule has extra stupidity.

In the first four quarters, they play 15m plus 5m ‘time on’ fixed so the quarters are always 20m

Then the extra time is 5m time on plus added time on as accrued, then they fo to golden point and of course no one even knows when that time starts

This game didnt go, a singel point was scored in extra time (womens games often go long periods with no scoring) but the last extra time went a bit over 6m

I thought I’d posted about this before but perhaps not.

Its been raised again in the aftermath of the Cricket World Cup Final debacle.

If an AFL final (including a grand final) is drawn, extra time is played - five minutes, plus time on, each way.

However, if the game is tied after extra time... the game switches to golden point. Next score wins.

The problem: there is, specifically in the rules, NO siren sounded if this happens. Play simply continues in the second half of extra time until somebody scores.

With nobody any the wiser.

What the actual fu**?

Possibly the most important game of the year, the game changes fundamentally from regular scoring to golden point... and there’s NO official notice given to anybody that it’s happened? What on earth?

Scoreboard clocks count up.

What possible reason could there be for this?

If it is to be decided this way then for god’s sake... blow the siren, take it back to the centre, bounce the ball, next score wins.

Good call on actually drawing attention to this now. The league has an awful habit of not thinking things through then being surprised when it happens.

In possibly the first ever example of the AFL showing logic and foresight, and avoiding a problem before it happened… this has been fixed.

Extra time periods will continue until a winner is decided.

Well done Big Footy, we got there.

Well done AFL, one of those things that otherwise would’ve been overlooked until it’s too late. Doesn’t change without this thread I’d imagine, all you Bunk.

Golden point was a terrible idea in footy. Works in soccer where goals come at a premium and works to some degree in rugby where it's a game of possession/territory and you can score via try, penalty and field goal. Doesn't work in footy where there's no offside, the game restarts with a contest in the centre and you have a near 20m high and infinitely high target to aim at.
