2023. The A League has agreed to create a relegation, promotion league for the next season. However, it was understood that a lack of infrastructure and talent across many smaller clubs would be the ultimate barrier to the over all success of the league.

So the powers that be dedicated the year 2023 "Year 1."
Year 1 would see the ten existing teams joined by ten new, handpicked and FA backed clubs, created a twenty team league. This unique year would see the top ten clubs remain in the A-League, and the bottom ten forming the new B-League in 2024.

The Gold Coast was always a problem for Australian Sports. So the FA were never interested in returning to the region with serious backing. And that's when Red Bull, with their marketing and youth development acrimony stepped into the breach.

Melbourne City were the next merger. After losing faith in their over seas franchise model and focussing on their Premier League side Manchester City pulled a large portion of their ownership stakes out of Melbourne. Sensing their long overdue opportunity to enter the big league was South Melbourne Hellas, who bought out the remaining controlling stake

and merged the two entities, enjoying the financial support of the City Group and their own loyal, home grown support.
