So its the fitness coach who should be sacked if the players refuse to run and help their team mates

We might be fit this year, but we were a long way off it the past few years. Not just him, but there are a lot at Essendon who are growing fat off our prosperity

Well that bit is hard to argue with , there are a number of oeple in several areas of the club that have become far too comfortable in recent times.

Quinny is that you? you always have a lot of inside info.....i'm starting to wonder..

:D

No im not involved with the club in any official way other than being a member. There are people on BB that can back that up.
All i can say is do see a lot of the training we do and i do have a good spy who gives me some info from time to time (most of which doesnt see the light of day on public formums ;) )

i dont post often.

but we just dont gut run at all, compared to other teams.

we need to see players just PUSHING THE LIMITS to peel off their opponents, get onto a handball recieve or drift into space and on the other hand and more importantly, use that same gut running to RUN BACK and be accountable.

i think that this problem is one of the biggest you could possibly have.

That's a problem in itself.

Yes it is as you would well know yourself. I can say that getting info out of WH has certainly become a bit harder in recent times ;)

The 2001 North game was the turning point at the club. Since that game, complacency has surged through the place like a virus.

New blood is needed and we will finally get it. Sheedy is everybody's mate it seems - he certainly wasn;t when he first started.

We need a coach with mongrel and the fear of God - or you need to make the players play for you - the best coaches have either.

If the new coach doesn't provide a new environment, we are in real trouble.

Good policy Ant robus- we don't want a leaky boat. And whatever you do, don't mention why Stanton really missed training a few weeks ago. ;)

He had a signed note from his mum ;)

Dons are not fit
08 August 2007 Herald Sun
Jon Pierik

FORMER Essendon fitness guru Peter Power yesterday delivered a damning assessment of the Bombers' conditioning department and claimed a one-dimensional Matthew Lloyd needed to lose weight.

Power, who worked closely with coach Kevin Sheedy between 1981-85 and 1988-91, was astounded by Lloyd's comments in yesterday's Herald Sun.
The Bombers skipper said his team was not suited to playing at the MCG – it has won only six of 23 games there in the past three years – and had essentially become a Telstra Dome specialist.
This prompted Power to send a stinging letter to the Herald Sun, which he was at pains to point out was not aimed directly at Sheedy. The highly respected John Quinn is Essendon's current high-performance manager.
"It is apparent that Essendon does not do enough hard gut-running fitness training, particularly in the pre-season sessions," Power said. "As a spectator, I note with sadness that unless Essendon is up by three to four goals at three-quarter time, they generally get run over in the final quarter.
"What Lloyd was quoted as saying is covering up the underlying reason – the current Essendon team is not fit enough.
"Look at the facts. How often over the last handful of years, for example, have Essendon run over the top of teams?"
Power was with Essendon during its back-to-back flags in 1984-85.
Power's frustration boiled over when the Bombers failed to kick a goal in the final quarter of a 63-point thrashing from Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.
Lloyd had a dirty day, kicking just the two goals.
"Matthew Lloyd should lose 5-6kg of muscle, as he appears to be too top-heavy," Power said.
"He needs to get more run in his legs and, therefore, he would not be the one-dimensional player that he is – full-forward – with the occasional burst up the ground.
"James Hird has lightened up and is enjoying another great season."
Power said Essendon teams under his guidance had "always finished strongly".
"My job was not to be the most popular staff member at the football club because I was the one pushing them past the pain barrier," he said.
"When I speak to former players, some claim to still have nightmares about our pre-season fitness sessions.
"The same players, however, enjoyed kicking a record 10 goals in the final quarter of the 1984 premiership win over Hawthorn."
Power acknowledged the game had changed "a great deal" since he left Essendon after the 1991 season and understood it took a week for some players to recover from their heavy workload.
Quinn fired back at Power, saying his opinion was no longer relevant.
"Saying we are losing games because we are not fit enough is a very long bow to pull," Quinn said.
"If we are not fit enough for the MCG, then Subiaco this weekend is going to be a huge test for us."
Quinn said statistics in the first half of the season showed the team had finished games strongly.
"The fitness of the team is high," he said.
"I haven't had a look at the statistics for the last three or four weeks, but I know three or four weeks ago we were the No. 1 team for the last quarter.
"We had won eight or nine out of 12 last quarters."

I believe this guy has made some good points, especially about Lloyd being to bulky. I know his injury hasn't helped but I believe Lloyd was much better when he was a bit thinner. What are other peoples thoughts on this article?

It would have been better if he checked a few facts first . He was also on SEN talking to KB and he backed away from a few things by saying he doesnt know exactly what is going on becasue he hasnt seen it first hand or spoken to John Quinn so his views are just made by looking from the outside. He also said that it probably isnt Quinns fault at one stage.
Where he mentioned that we didnt do enough hard gut running in pre season he got it wrong. They did . I saw them doing beepers , 220's and 440's regualry during the pre season and often blokes where running until they dropped and where dry reaching. The workload was well up on anything i had seen in previous years.
Just on Lloyd his current weight is down on when he was kicking 100 goals a few years ago . Lloyds problem is he is trying to play body on body and has gone away from what made him effective and that is a leading FF.

I wonder why he leads to the wings ?
