When we stop running under the Queen's monarchy (which I think is getting closer with every referendum we have on the issue) then we drop the Union Jack and bring in a new flag. What that is I don't know.

I don't have any love for the Union Jack as our flag and definitely want it gone. But at this time, I'm really uncertain as what we could replace it with.

Yeah I agree, I want a flag change and a republic, but not 'green and gold'. Like some have said, 'green and gold' looks too tacky and horrible.

The Canadians have the maple leaf for a symbol, we should use the southern cross for a symbol and use that for most part of our new flag, if we're to get one.

I don't mind that flag actually, which was brought up during a debate in the early 90's about the flag.

I also don't mind this design, that footy fumbler posted, but i prefer the colours to be dark blue and white, rather than green and gold.

I don't mind that one. I'm happy with current flag and staying part of the monarchy though. What's becoming a republic going to alter? Just a head of state. It would just be an expensive way to be symbolic and not really change anything because I doubt we'd change our laws. The Westiminster system is one of the more stable democratic systems.

As others have said, I suppose we could follow the Canadian model. They pretty much just changed their flag. They still have a Prime-Minister, follow the Westminster system and have a Governor-General.

Unfortunately, the aboriginal flag is a private commercial design - it has been pushed by the media, but it has no official status. If you want to use it, you pay.

The southern cross can be seen by approximately half the worlds population - all the southern hemisphere, plus approx 25 degrees north of the equator - this includes almost all of India (1 Billion), all of the Phillipines (95 Million), Indonesia (230 Million), bangladesh (150 Million), all of africa up to and including the sahara. Some parts of the Cross can be seen throughout China and the entire mainland US (even some parts of Canada).

At the Eureka Stockade (which has entered our culture as a significant event - amazing considering how trivial it was), the 'rebels' swore 'by the Southern Ccross'. It seems odd to pledge allegiance to something of which the closest part is approximately 40,000,000,000,000 kms away. But thanksto some impressive writing by Banjo Patterson and Adam Lindsay Gordon, we have what we have.
I guess there is a concern that if we don't include the Southern cross in the next flag, will all the Bogans with the tatt rise up in rebellion?

It's funny that in the whole republican debate, the part that attracts the most attention is probably the least important - the flag.

Yes, the Canadian flag is one of the best designed flags in the world, but to say that they only came up with it solely to establish a national identity is false, because they wanted a flag that would keep the French Canadians happy and unwilling to secede, and dumped the old flag to as a way to stop Quebec from forming it's own country.

Most of the world's flags are linked to some degree, many African flags have Red, Gold & Green, a lot of Arab flags have Red, Black, White & Green, so to say that we need to come up with something unique has some benefits, but is difficult considering the amount of nations there are in the world.

And lastly, to simply have the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal Flag, on the Blue Ensign would look ghastly, and would be far more exclusionary than having the Union Jack on the canton (top left hand corner, which is a spot of high regard on a flag), because Indigenous people only amount to 2-3% of Australia's population.

That's why any new flag should have either the southern cross (even though it's also on the flags of Brazil, New Zealand & Samoa), or a Kangaroo on it (I've seen some good ones done on the Ausflag website, if anyone's interested).

And I think we should avoid going down the South African route of having too many colours on the flag, and keep it down to three (Red, White & Navy or Gold, Red & Navy), because having too many colours makes anything look cluttered, especially a flag which is something that is usually seen at a distance.

Personally, I would only change the flag if there was something better to replace it, and most of the designs I've seen are either rip offs of the Aboriginal Flag, or a dog's breakfast combining of our current flag's colours & the Aboriginal Flag, so unless something better comes along, keep it as it is.

Yeah, I know that. My comment was purely predicated on the desire to come up with some new symbol (or even worse) combination of symbols that somehow represented Australia. You get some horrible things going down. The maple leaf was something they always had in the mix, I like how they brought it forward.

I'm a Republican , but I'm not in a hurry to change - there is no need to hurry ,but when we have some spare time we should start down that path .
Part of that process is getting a new flag .We shouldn't hurry into it and we should think very clearly as to what we want as it wont change for a long time .

In a side issue , I side with indigenous people that we are celebrating Australia day on the wrong day .January 26th is actually Foundation Day , the day when the colony of NSW was founded .Australia Day is actually January 1st when Australia became into being by being federated .
