News A Real Lion at the Gabba?

Change.org petition opposing this thing:

https://www.change.org/p/brisbane-l...de-it-in-front-of-thousands-of-screaming-fans

I must admit, the longer this goes on, the less scepticism I feel at the idea and the more amusement at the reaction to it.
This is gold. The organizer took Swann's quote that "we can do what we want" out of context to make him say "You can't tell us what to do! If we want to torture animals then we will!" He was actually saying that our Gabba deal allows us freedom to choose our entertainment. Nice try!

I would personally go with cheer leaders and good music ala "The Heat". I think it would give it more lively vibe and more entertaining than our current cheer squad.

No one likes you either.

As for half-time entertainment, we already have it. You know, those kids who bust their little guts running around? The Auskickers who are the future of our game? Without whom the days of our game are numbered?

Yeah, it would be nice if people paid attention to them, huh?

Cant we just have more prize draws and stuff along those lines? Wouldnt cost much to get some gear and have it signed as prizes.

I wouldnt mind seeing 'mugsy' in a gladiator styled battle though.

If we bring in kiss cam ill neck myself.

The club is 12 mil in debt, right?
We need to attract more members, more bums on seats at the Gabba, Right?
Wealthy Americans are paying a million dollars to African private parks to shoot a lion, right?
Well we release the twelve Australia Park Lions on to the Gabba, get 12 wealthy Americans, give them a Kalashnikov each and let the pre-game entertainment begin.
This will result in more memberships, more bums on seats, may even result in a few less wealthy Americans but hey it's going to be bloody entertaining, right?
...and no more debt.

I work for the TAB, so when I'm not watching sport I am (unfortunately) watching horse/dog racing. I can empathize with the people that morally object to this, but really, how is this any worse than horse/dog racing? To me, a lion parading around an oval seems a lot more ethical than a horse (probably injected with the same stuff as Essendon) racing around a track. Thats without even considering that quite often in the races, horses will fall and become seriously injured/have to be put down. I'm not saying I support the Lion parading or horse racing, but isn't it a bit contradictory to oppose one and not the other?

Also, living in Perth, I have been to quite a few West Coast games - The eagle that they let go of before the match always received a positive crowd response.

To be fair, the initial linked petition isn't too bad. I think it raises valid concerns and isn't unduly melodramatic.

The follow up was a bit of a sharkjump.

Thats presuming people dont have an issue with horse/dog racing I guess.

Not a fan of horse racing or greyhound racing either to be honest. But I didn't know that we had to rage against all outrages at once?

Can I express contempt against child abuse in Australia without it being seen as a tacit endorsement of child trafficking in Russia?

I do see what you're getting at, but not sure I see it that way. I think TBD is exactly right that ethical concern isn't only valid if you have an unimpeachably consistent spray at everything. On top of that, this particular thing just adds so little IMO. I'm also not in love with racing animals, but that is the entire event so it's either have it or can the thing. The lion is pre-match confectionary at best, and potentially a really, really bad idea.

Haha, I enjoyed the petition creator taking Swann's "we can do what we want at the Gabba" quote totally out of context to look like he's saying "****, we'll crucify 50 lions in the half time break if we goddamn want to".
Yeah, we can even get rid of the cricket pitch and replace it with a drop-in. ;):(

Hysteria25 raises a good point though. Get the punters through the gates by offering horse and dog racing at half time around the outside of the playing field.

If only we kept the dog track at the Gabba. We'd be raking it in.

Post of the millennium.

I've got a dim recollecton that they used to have greyhound racing after the game at Corio decades ago. Anyone know?

Assuming this works for Brisbane, will Freo follow suit and get a real life anchor at their ground before games?

Watching an anchor sit in the middle of the ground would still be more interesting than watching freo play.

Carlton to have some real blues in the middle of the park at half time?

The Giants to have a real ogre devour live sacrifices.

How about Melbourne?

Marine life to be paraded around in fish tanks?

Eggzactly.

Swanny has us in the paper, on radio, he's talking to the Boss at AFLHQ, the Boss is talking publicly about Swanny bringing in some confidence at the Lions.....

We're in the news people, and its the second week of September and we're not even playing.

Swann wants people to know about the Lions, and think about the Lions, and be aware of the Lions. He's succeeding so far.

Our past few years has been along the lines of "why would you want to play for/go see the Brisbane Lions".

This year, and beyond, Swann wants to make the Club of interest to potential and current players, and potential and current supporters a like.

This ain't about live Lions at games - this is about creating interest and awareness in the Club, on a constant basis.

Well its certainly got everybody talking about the Lions and that was most likely the objective. Of course it won't happen but it certainly gets the mind thinking about what could be done to add theatre to game day. Maybe a permanent Animatronics Lion in the stand which Roars every time there's a goal or just a MGM type Lion on the big screen The kids would love it. All they are trying to do is achieve something like Buck the Bronco doing his lap at Suncorp. Use your imagination folks.

Melbourne have plenty of their own personal demons and Carlton have had 'the blues' all year ;)

Port Adelaide to have some power lines.

GWS to borrow Sandilands for pre-game entertainment.

And Gold Coast ?? A giant mirror reflecting the sun into the eyes of supporters

This media coverage is great!

I want Lion burgers sold at every Gabba concession stand in 2015. 2 all lion patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickled onions on a sesame seed 3 day old foot-long sub.

Delicious and more wildlife-sensitive than whatever the hell goes into those Super-dog things. Ewwwww.

I would not be surprised if there are more mentions of the Brisbane Lions on social media (likes, tweets), and reports on all major tv/radio news bulletins in the country today than any other time this year. Has to be a media strategy by the club...
