I have realised why the working class players (who used to lack skill and decision-making) such as King, White, Farmer and Tuck have improved. Damien Hardwick used to be a hard nut, a solid player, and he's taught them the things for them to improve.

...It sounded better in my head but you get what I'm trying to get across right?

Yeh thats been evident pretty clearly! your 100% spot on, Dimma has shown these guys how to simplify their game style and excel at the basics and its paying dividends for the side!

All players mentioned are much improved!

Absolutely. Its amazing how much a player can turn around when he feels the sincerity of his coach instead of lipservice. Gotta love Hardwick.

I love Jake King as a bloke.

But tonight he was very frustrating to watch. He got caught with the ball so many times....!!!!

Another thing: The best coaches have generally been those that have were hard nut working class players when they played. E.g Malthouse, Sheedy...Hardwick???

Another thought came to me - maybe those types of coaches are the best because they get the best out of your Farmers, your Kings, your Tucks etc.

Malthouse with Collingwood - the last few years, Collingwood's team hasn't looked that good on paper, but look at where they've finished on the ladder each time. Malthouse gets the best out of his players.

Thoughts?

I think Farmer is good.

Out of the other 3....

....White's not the complete hack I once thought, but will he keep improving enough? Will he show what he's shown tonight and against Port, against good teams? Let's see if he has the same licence against Sydney in a fortnight.

King's played 3-4 good games (one was last week) and the rest have been nothing more than poor.Liability most weeks.

Tuck's played well of late but is an ordinary footballer and always will be....really I'd rather just have better players in their spots eventually...

Add Edwards to that list. I thought he was scrap heap material last season. But kudos to him. Looks like Dimma's got him bulked up, not a push-over around the contests and looks like he enjoys at least trying to impose himself on a contest.

Watch these tackers continue to build bigger bodies over the coming seasons too. Will take a long time, but finally starting to look upwards.

Tuck is one of if not the best clearance player in the compa dn the way he was treated last year and early this year was disgraceful. If any can't see that he is a good player they are kidding themselves. He has been getting in our best constantly over the last month.

I completely agree. You look at Collingwood and behind all the membership drive hype and razzmatazz, behind the top 4 finishes they do not actually have many if any stand out talents. We are spooning and have bigger starts IMO. However they are greater than the sum of their parts. That is why MM is a top coach and he is a top coach whether or not they take the flag.

Edwards was great early on. But faded out late.

Terry Wallace, Spud Frawley, Tony Shaw were all hard nut working class players, not the greatest coaches though!

Didak, Shaw, Pendlebury, Medhurst, Leon Davis, Dale Thomas, Luke Ball and Darren Jolley are all stand out players (or hang on, the Herald Sun tole me Malthouse is the hero. Ps. How is his 12 year plan at Coll going?)

Yeah they don't have many stand out talents. Just Didak, Shaw, Pendlebury, Dale Thomas, Ball and Jolley.
...havent seen didak do anything this year that makes me think hes a standout...except in diving...or missing when the heats on...just who was driving that car?!?!?

shaw...doesnt like the physical stuff...a little like didak...

pendlebury...inconsistent...a good player, not a stand out...

dale thomas...another leon davis...flashy...

ball...good player when fit...best years with saints...

jolley...ditto like ball...best year if any...with swans...

I think Kingy played well tonight and has been in a rare vein of form for the past month.

Sure he gets caught with the ball a bit and his left foot always seems to find the wrong side of the boundary line, but i think many will agree with me when i say that he has become a vital cog since being switched to the half forward line.

No I just have an aversion to mediocrity and unlike the majority of this board it seems, can tell the difference between good players and average ones....but hey , the likes of you and JAKWANKING feel free to continue your love affair with the hardworking plodders who rack up stats and just throw it on the boot....meanwhile, I'll continue to dream of players who might win us flags one day....:thumbsu:

I long for the day we start bombing out in finals rather than bomb out after Round 5 , when the only question marks we have over players is whether or not they can stand up September, not whether or not they can stand up in April, May & June or at AFL level period.........the only simian-like intelligence on display here is yours....
