A rucking paradox

OK. In 2011 it was a different coach, so it doesn't count, and when everyone was fit in 2012, Sandilands and Clarke played as the ruck combo, with Bradley as the second tall forward. I doubt there have been many occasions where Bradley played as second ruckman under Lyon when both Sandilands and Clarke were available.

The last time that both Bradley and Sandilands were both fit at the same time was 2012. He was picked more than once ahead of Clarke in 2012. Last year Bradley and Griffin played until Griffin was injured and then Bradley was injured.

Who knows what Ross will do when everyone is available but I think if Gumby was fit he would be playing instead of Clarke. Maybe not all the time but I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen.

How often did Kepler and Sandilands play together with no second ruck? More often in 2012 did Lyon play two genuine rucks ahead of a genuine ruck + Kepler situation.

I don't buy the idea that the preferred ruck combination is Sandilands + Kepler. Why would the club have five genuine ruckmen on the list if Sandilands + a part timer is the ideal set up?

The most recent game was the elimination final that year. The only other game since then that they were all available was the Adelaide final and the general consensus on here was that Bradley should have played.

Ross played Griffin and Bradley at the start of last year when Sandi and Clarke were injured. You would think if he was so concerned about the second ruck he would have played Hannath. Hannath only got a game when Pavlich went down.

I think as I said before if Gumby was fit this would have been experimented with, especially with Clarke underdone
And we'll never know but my suspicion is it would've put too much pressure on Sandi, and we would've soon resorted to the preferred set up of Sandi-Clarke.
I just can't see Bradley getting a game over Clarke

Interesting topic.

On the flipside, after watching yesterdays game, the ruck contest is what really stood out for me. Lobbe was rucking against Kreuzer/Warnock and the hitout count was 28-44 in favour of the Carlton duo. But Lobbe had better taps and aquired 5 tackles where as Carlton duo had 1 in between them. The pressure and mobility that Lobbe gave made Kreuzer and especially Warnock look slow and cumbersome. Neither presented up forward, neither was a marking option and Lobbe rucking solo gave the option of 1 quicker player on the field. He gave first use and provided a contest, when he didn't win the ruck he made sure it was going to be a stalemate.

Sandilands and Clarke are both very agile for big guys, both can play forward and be a marking option too, Whilst Sandi moves well, he lumbers at an average pace, I cannot see Sandi/Griffin rucking together purely on the basis that the speed it robs makes the combo obsolete, especially with the interchange cap. Unless of course there are plans with an early vesting with either.

Im still unsure on Keplar, I think he can fill a variety of gaps, but i dont see him in the ruck ever again unless we are a ruck or 2 down. And even then, dawson did a fantastic job when he had to fill Griffins shoes when he went down. I see Bradley as a forward only in all honesty.

Not really. Lyon only plays players if they are physically ready.

The fact Lyon switch from Bradley to Clarke in the semi final suggests he had doubts about Sandilands and Kepler being the best combination.

Fremantle has a plethora of physically capable genuine ruckmen now. I question the idea that Sandilands and Kepler is the preferred ruck combination.

I agree. Who is saying that the preferred ruck combo is Sandi & Kep ?

By my count, two sides played with three genuine ruckmen this weekend.

West Coast played Cox, Naitanui and Sinclair. Theirs was a unique case - Naitanui is very quick and not a lumbering ruckman in any sense of the word, so therefore it's more akin to them playing two true ruckman and a freak. Also against Melbourne you could just about field 22 ruckmen and still win easily.

Geelong played McIntosh, Blicavs and Simpson. Blicavs is also quite athletic, however it was raining which makes it harder for big men.
