Hi VAFA lovers, just wanted to say congrats to a couple of Eagles legends for making the Bourke Team of the decade.
Bernard Dinneen, well what can you say? The best Marcellin player in the clubs fine history.
Coxy, well again, a very, very good player. Congrats to both.

The Eagles will be stronger this year, we are following the De La Salle blueprint.

Adios amigos!!!

I just had a look at the clearances on the VAFA website and some interesting stuff

Cultrera & Krakouer from OT going to Aquinas
Spriggs from OB heading to EFL

But most interesting is the number of recruits going to OS, so far they 23 players coming across including

Mark Passador from the SANFL (Gun)
3 players form the EFL
A couple from country leagues and another 3 From VFL and TAC cup

They may not be as bad as everyone thinks!

Looks like Aquinas are recruiting strongly from the EFL also!

I wonder when the clearance for Pettifer, Coughlan and Richardson will come through for xavs? Add biddlecombe to that mix and everyone else in "premier" looks to be in trouble..

I had heard that Joel Bowden and Matthew Richardson are with Coughlan at St Kevin's also, is this true?
Always good to put those Jesuits in their place!

Plenty of stories doing the rounds about Richo. In response to rumours linking him to numerous clubs Richo said on SEN last week there is no chance of him playing anywhere in 2010. I guess time will tell.

Absolutely no chance Bowden or richo will be playing with SKOB however Coughlan may run out a few times (so Im told)...doesnt this discussion belong on the Premier B board?

Geez, a blast from the past!, Doug Hogan, circa the Eagles late 90's and early 00's, great to have you on the forum, the great man has returned!
Hows life up on the Gold Coast Sir Douglas? The last 5 or so years have flown by, VAFA footy has certainly been the poorer for your forced relocation and the beers have never been as cold out at the College since you departed!
My mob finally won our elusive flag in 2006 as I am sure you are no doubt aware, hopefully we can all hang in this year whilst we get some much needed youth into both joints...work calls, I'm off into the cab for the 4 am till 6 pm shift.

Nothing personal here Doug, but I love the way ammo clubs claim to be following some sort of "recruiting strategy". Surely every club just tries to get as many good players as they possibly can, save for the rare circumstance where a good player is not a good person.

Clubs often speak of reverting to a "youth policy" and I know Haileybury have copped flack in the past for recruting ex-AFL players at the expense of their kids. But in all seriousness, what club doesn't try to attract the best youth from its feeder source, and what club would ever knock back a decent player, ex-AFL or not?

It really comes down to the luck of the draw. Some clubs are able to attract good players in the twilight of their careers, whether that be through friends, contact networks or some other avenue. Other clubs are fortunate enough to have good kids coming through their feeder clubs, De La seem to have enjoyed a wealth of talent coming through their school in recent years.

To say that a club is reverting to some sort of a recruiting policy is a wank in my opinion. Sure, a club may focus their energy in one particular direction, however I don't think any amateur club is in the position of turning away potential recruits based on their age or because they don't fit in with their particular recruiting strategy.

Amateur clubs are reasonably transient, there is normally a large turnover of players as blokes choose to go overseas or interstate, concentrate on careers, concentrate on their families or play at other clubs. As a result of this, from what I have seen, it's hard to build a group of players using the "youth policy" as it is very difficult to keep a bunch of young players together for any length of time.

Agree with that, OS will struggle to make an impact this year. But to say the place is no good or players hate the coach is rubbish.

A few have left because they didn't play seniors last year - in a year when they had to play plenty - they will keep developing and try to do that in A Grade.

Rob Ferraro (ex. Noble Park) signed for OS from the Ovens & Murray League. Will be a huge bonus. Probably in EFL top 5 onballers and played in the country team that played against the VAFA last year.
Not a bad pick up at all.

Yes your typical OS pickup.
Play three games,
Assist OS to a respectable 7th
Then Piss Off in 2011

Apparently not everyone wants to join the foreign legion chazz

Aaaahhhh! Plumber. Great to see you carrying the torch still. I have returned from a tour of europe, scandinavia and the sub continent ready for 2010.
Now that I've returned can you fill me in on what happened in 2008? Why no even year glory?

Doug, can you shed any light on why Cox got the flick from the Marcellin coaching job? Or did he bail out?

Well, that does remain a source of great debate around the club.

Many thought that with a limited list, Coxy did a super job of pushing the kids through and keeping the club in A section. I certainly was of that belief.

Not everyone agreed.

Agreed, a good effort last year.

The hierarchy at Marcellin do have high expectations of the list -by all reports they have a few back and training well. That will help.

Was out for a quiet ale last weekend and 2 young Dela guns were trashing the coach like there was no tomorrow. Was obviously the piss talking but when they were in the group they were in saying stuff like 'the coach has nothing to do with how good we are he just inherited a top list' and that 'most of the playing group think he is an absolute fwit"

Was an interesting afternoon and a suprise that 2 guys would talk as stupidly and openly as they did in front of a large group of footy people.

Coaching senior footy has never been a popularity contest as far as Im aware. Some of the most successful VAFA coaches have been less than top blokes but still got results.

I heard that the new coaches pitch to the sub committee was 'structure, structure, structure' with much excitement of a new game plan being implemented this year. Only time will tell.

Is that the same game plan he used with his under 19 Scotch team. Unskilled, soft attack on the ball, whinge heaps when it gets tough, no particular method of play, no set structures. Will be very interested in how the Eagles go with him at the helm.

hahahah back to B or C grade or whatever ur in u beauy toss. seeing as mad dogs often goes out with his players and drinks with them obviously means that he is liked and respected and secondly he side from last yr is just about the same one from the yr before that almost got relegated so i think he should take some credit for last yr you idiot!

The great man Douglass!! Now, that is a blast from the past.

From what you say Doug, it appears that Coxy may have been a little unlucky to lose the gig?
