Nicholson is the best 18 year old playing in the entire VAFA competition. He'll be drafted to one of the new AFL franchises.

Agreed. Nicholson is a star (thought he was older than 18 however)
Believe he did a pre-season with an AFL club pre 2009 season. Should be in the squad. Surely this is an oversight.

He trained with Hawthorn

Did a preseason with Geelong, was offered a spot on their VFL list. Is either 18 or 19, would be a cert to make the Unders Squad. Is an ex CBC St Patrick's boy & would be in the Top 10 players in A Grade this year.

See chairman of selectors Mick Hazell has decreed who is to be in the Vic Squad at this stage. How on earth did Nicholson from UB and Beck from OM miss out? Far too many ordinary B grade (and lesser grade) footballers in that squad for mine - who is Florance? Why are they plumbing such depths? In my day (not that long ago) it was a big thing to be selected for the big V - I don't remember too many D graders training on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings at EP back then.

Maybe Hazell feels morally obliged to look after the lower grades given his Salesian roots.

Mal you are a moron. (Newbie for sure)

Paul Florance is a gun who has played state football in previous years and would walk into any A Grade team. David Boundy would be on everyones shopping list. Owen Weatherley would be 1st pick FF.

Players like Denver Artz and Ewan Thompson were automatic picks regardless of whether they were playing in B, C or D Grade.

Get your pin head out of the clouds.

thanks for the kind words Max

Denver Artz was overrated.

I repeat what I say about Florance - who is he?

Weatherley has kicked 20 to date against average defences - let's not get ahead of ourselves. B grade is still B grade and the gulf between A and B is large - ask Weatherley's teammates about it. Contrast this with Ramsden (21) and Handley (16) against far more disciplined and diligent backlines - on that basis alone, he would be third picked at best - not first as you put it.

I don't believe Boundy is better than many of the key position players already playing in premier A either. He hasn't exacly set the world on fire in that incredibly difficult section known as 'Division 2'. Unlike the VAFA selectors, I take the view that you pick blokes on form at a decent standard, not reputations (read Boundy) or even past deeds.

Maybe you can suggest that the selectors should start looking at 'some gun' in D4 because he's kicked 33 goals in 4 weeks against full backs that have an average weight of 113kgs and eat pies at half time.

My feet and pin head are firmly on the ground Max.

Hmm...Paul Florance won the comp B&F in D1 at age 21 after coming back to Bulleen-Temp from Northern Bullants I believe. Would comfortably fit into an A grade midfield, but whether he's good enough to make the open Rep Side remains to be seen.

He played very well in the open U23 side last year, so I guess that'd help his case.

As for Weatherley being able to play footy, I guess the North Adelaide football club probably had a fair idea when they were picking him in SANFL seniors. He's much travelled in the bush leagues, but played Rep footy for Ballarat League a few years ago and I think will be able to hold his own.

If you play A grade (sorry Premier), you get fed by Premier grade midfielders.
Down in Division 1, let me assure you, the service isn't so flash. Andy Cultrera would be able to attest to that right about now.

I'd rather be a defender in a lower grade side - there'd be fewer times that your opponent got you on a lead where you had no chance to spoil. With less pin-point delivery, you're always a chance to make a contest.

thanks re Florance.

agree re backlines for OS (what is the problem down there?) and Marcellin (decimated by injury) - are OB that bad? I haven't seen them nor have I heard much about them other than there was an exodus pre season.

Wow, Max, that's one helluva classy post you've written there. Three insults and a rebuttal that would get you laughed out of the Kaniva Commercial.

Now my maths isn't that great but if you play the rule of thirds (6 A-graders, 6 B-graders, 6 C-graders in any given team) that's a good 60 blokes who are "walk up starts" in A Grade amateur clubs. Hardly ticking the boxes for automatic representative selection, now is it?

"Pin head" and "moron" say more about the intellectual midget using the insults online than anything else, but it's the "newbie" one that gets me, and I can see it's not the fiirst time you've used it either.

Must be unreal rocking up to Old Ivanhoe in the pre-season.

New player: "Hey mate, my name's Bruce....yeah...from down Balnarring way. Hey would you like a cold one?"

Max : "P1ss off, moron, I don't talk to new players with pin heads like yours, come talk to me when you've been here a few years."

Kind of goes a long way to explaining what went on at Old Ivanhoe last year I guess.

Nicholson will play in the U19 match for sure - a match that will attract far more interest from AFL scouts. The best U19 players from the country vs players from the best U19 comp in the country (although practically all of the players selected will be playing seniors). The unders squads will be annouced later this week they said...

Brucey, Brucey, Brucey

My comments were directed to a novice poster( May 2010), who gets on the Thread and bags a Footballer who quite deservedly is nominated for the Rep Team. Refer Scribes in depth background on said player.

So OI got relegated, it happens to all clubs except those in D4.

And Bruce if you rocked up and said I'm from Balnarring, I would do what anyone would do at OI, introduce you to the coach.

Anyone is welcome, the door is open, and hopefully I can joint the Premier A Thread next year. Maybe, maybe not. Time will tell.Go Hoes

You would think with the strong Blues connection with GWS that Nicholson is a monty to get drafted there. I don't know how Max can justify his non selection in the senior side though, Sholly has lost the plot there.

Mal from Malvern posts and then Bruce from Balnarring posts, what's the chance of two usernames so similar posting after each other defending the other, about 1,000,000:1?

What's next Mal/Bruce, are you going to be Pete from Portsea or Basil from Behind?

Weatherley kicked around 300 goals in 2 years for Silvan in 08 and 09, and has played 4 games this year....is a BEAST.

Not sure who I bagged Max as no names were mentioned. Sloppy work.

Mal,

The impression I got from your posts was that, as you'd never heard of Paul Florance, then perhaps he wasn't deserving of getting picked in the initial squad. Whether it's bagging a bloke is a matter of interpretation.

I trust this isn't the case, but that's how it came across to me initially.

Cheers

Interesting to see the tribunal results from the weekend.

SBMT fined $1000 for the continual abuse both during and after the game of umpire Koffman by the president Matt Beasley.

SBMT president and officials are to visit umpire training and make an official verbal apology to the umpires and a written letter of apology is to be sent from Matt Beasley to Koffman.

If I remember correctly there has been a bit of history between Koffman and SBMT, originating in the 2006 C Section Grand Final between SBMT and Ajax...

Firstly Sach is a top bloke and great umpire - very much undeserved abuse.

Secondly what are peoples thoughts of OB reserves player only getting 4 weeks for spitting in a Collegian players face.. Personally, I think the penalty isn't tough enough. Stuff like that has no place in this game!

Would have thought this forum is precisely the place to discuss such incidents. $1000 fine = must have given him fair mouthful and clearly overstepped the line.

Well done to the tribunal for making the statement that such treatment of the umps isn't on.

And very timely with Umpire Appreciation Week coming up.

Regardless of if there was an underlying issue you just can't treat the umpires in that manner, especially as a leading official of a footy club.

Absolutely - clearly he was frustrated at getting rolled at Brindisi St (rare) and now having lost two on the trot (rare) and I think face DLS at Waverley this week where they got smashed last year (?) which stuffed them up for the double chance - I don't think they have mentally recovered from that mauling - are they getting a bit wobbly?

I wouldn't dismiss St Bedes just yet, Mal. They are a very good club with still a strong list despite the loss of a couple key players in successive years.

I think St Bedes style of play will counter the 'play on at all costs' and excessive numbers around the ball style of De La, and there wouldn't be a huge difference in the size of the two grounds.

I think it will come right down to the wire for these two proud and competitive clubs.
