Anyway being umpire appreciation weekend..can I suggest if you run into the VAFA Umpires doyen 'Benny' that everyone give him a Dougie Bollinger type hair ruffling!!

The Whale.

umm probably not a good idea - best to wish him a speedy recovery if the rumours I heard are true that he had a heart attack...

OS over Marc - Really boring game (who's going to give up at half time?) 30pts
Coll over OT - tougher gamer than i reckon Coll will want, home ground advantage will go a long way i think. but collegians a little too strong. 24pts
UB over OX - tough pick but i think UB just may get over OX 9pts
De La over SMBT - home ground advantage and knowledge will get them over here, cracking game. 19 pts
OM over OB - (I hope) OM thump OB. OB to have a couple of players front the VAFA tribunal (again) on tuesday. 60pts

Some top games this weekend. The Blues v Xavs and the De La v St Bedes should give us a clearer picture of who the serious contenders are.

This is by far the toughest tipping round to date, as previous posts have alluded to, the games that will sort the contenders from the pretenders will be OX v UB and DLS v SBMT

OS v MARC - No this is not a mistake, im tipping a draw. Both teams are incapable of winning a match at the moment, thus a draw is the only viable outcome

OT v COLL - The T's play Marles well, but Collegians have shown they are right in the mix this year and should take the chocolates. COLL by 23 pts

OX v UB - Dont think OX have really hit their straps yet, so im going to stick with the blues who are in red hot form at the moment. UB by 34 pts

DLS v SBMT - DLS have the wood over SBMT and will account for them in what will be a fizzer. DLS by 52 pts

OB v OM - Having cracked their duck, the OMs will continue on their merry way and confirm that OB will join the eagles in B section for 2011. OMs by 43 pts

anyone who watched the SBMT vs AJAX grand final can understand why the umpires from that day don't care for SBMT. They used weak, try-hard rough tactics against a 100% fair team. Maybe that was the reason they won but it was a disgrace to watch.

The president is clearly a cretin if he thinks umpire abuse is the way to solve a problem

$1000 fine and letter more than appropriate. Umpires are an easy target and need to be protected

Back to C Grade or premier 3rds or whatever rubbish sholly is calling it.

Whatever the name it is still 3rd division and your 100% fair team is still there.

this is the A section thread - please return to your rightful place.

Thanks for your time though

OS vs Marc
OT vs Coll
OX vs UBL
DLS vs SBMT
OB vs OM

Big call on Marcellin, reckon they are ready for a win and OS are floundering. I'm worried about picking Xavs over the rampant Blues, but I have to give them a go at home.
OTP

You only missed it by 111 points. Marcellin were terrible.

Dont think we can put it down to just the bad performance on Saturday, ARE is a more appropiate word! Got to feel for them though they have had a shocking run with injuries. Its just a matter of who will be going down with them at that end of the table.

vafa guru, having reviewed Sententious' previous posts he/she has never posted anything about Ajax and seems to have only posted about Old Xavs, De La, Old Trinity and Old Brighton games. this could mean he is from one of those clubs or gets to see a variety of games, like an umpire for instance. im guessing supporters from the abovementioned clubs couldn't give a stuff 1. about SBMT in 2006 and 2. Ajax aparant unfair treatment in a grand final. Therefore it could be concieveable that this psuedonym belongs to someone that could umpire, like sacha for example. If so it seems so very sad that this person would bother posting on bigfooty and should probably concentrate on officiating. This is a big if but this comment seems like one of someone that has never played footy especially in a grand final "They used weak, try-hard rough tactics against a 100% fair team"
anyway enough of this topic, especially after umpire appreciation weekend, the majority of VAFA umpires are great.

This is so not true. Too many free kicks and soft 25metres being paid. Let the game go umpires. You dont get paid on commission and how many frees you pay. Stay out of the game as much as you can. I have seen that many soft free kicks given to teams in their own forward 50. Its deciding games. Umpires shouldnt decide games. Pull your heads in fellas, and realise you are there to monitor the game as much and as best you can. Whilst trying to keep ur input as minimal as possible.
I strongly believe umpires are holding grudges on certain players who have given them a mouthful. Pay the free against them and warn them, but then the player and team have a clean plate. Players are also being sent off for saying the F-bomb to themselves. not even having to yell it in anger anymore. The VAFA players arent being paid to be role models, and those who do support the VAFA, are ex players and parents. So they are the older generations, not the young ones. Let the players show some passion. We love to see them care about the game. And leave the role model crap to the AFL players and stupid wages. Not having to pay to play this game.

Great in what context? If you're talking about umpiring ability, there's around half a dozen genuine "A" grade fieldies and even less goalies and boundaries IMO.

I've never seen a non controlling umpire make as many decisions as I did at the Xavs v Blues game on Saturday. The top talent is as sparse as it's ever been. It's a tough gig and getting tougher due to the higher levels of scrutiny. That probably has much to do with it. I gather the lack of top talent is not something peculiar to the Ammos it's just bloody hard getting people to take it on.

I would say that most of the umpires in a-grade ammos do a pretty good job - much better than the umpires in the AFL in so much as they let things go a lot more. As for the swearing, they are purely implimenting orders from up the line so you can not really blame them for that. I am continually amazed that people are surprised that umpires make an incorrect decision or get it wrong sometimes. do players ever make mistakes or say, miss goals from 20m out directly in front??? you need to look at your own team which i'm sure made their share of costly mistakes during the game before suggesting that the umpires are deciding games. the umpiring bitch is boring and a waste of time.

I disagree hhound - fair and reasonable criticism is not umpire b%tching and I suspect is rarely feed back to the men in white. Certainly there doesn't seem to be any forum or method of clubs giving the VAFA feedback on their opinion of the level of umpiring - and as the key stakeholders and financiers of the game clubs have a right to be heard on this issue and to not suffer at the coal face on Saturday for making their thoughts known.

FG is spot on the money in my opinion and it seems the need/want for an umpire to get "involved" in a game gets worse the higher up the grade you go and the more important the game is!!! I don't think anyone really gets that upset when an umpire makes a judgement call on a 50:50 decision – most people are grounded enough to realise that if the umpires where really that good they wouldn’t be umpiring in the ammo’s in the same way that if the collective “us” as footballers where really that good we wouldn’t be playing ammo’s….

But what really ruins a game of footy is when a contentious (or worst still bad) decision is followed up with pedantic, child like behaviour such as awarding 25's (or 2 lots of 25’s) and sending people off for bad language, talking back etc because the umpire is thinned skinned. The situation will often deteriorates further if the umpire becomes vindictive and continues to penalise teams in some sort of statement of authority for the remainder of the game (and if you think that doesn’t happen you are kidding yourself!!!). That is what I think FG is referring to and that, I believe, is a fair criticism of the some umpiring in the ammo’s.

Some player/supporters will always make their opinion known but by the very nature of a 50:50 decision you are going to have people disagree with you. You can’t expect to resolve this issue but there is no need to incite the situation. Umpires need to understand that with the power to make decisions that directly affect the game, their role comes with the responsibility of keeping some sort of calm and order in the game - not inciting teams and supporters by acting in a tit for tat type role in which they will always win. And yes, it doesn’t excuse the brain fades that some players and clubs undergo but that’s footy – it’s a hot, passionate game and we don’t want that to change!!!

As for people not complaining about players making mistakes you have obviously never been around on a Tuesday night doing sprints, 400's, push ups, circuits, one on ones and all other sort of stuff because Saturday’s performance wasn't up to scratch – most coaches are more than willing to point out where you’ve stuffed up!!! :)

Seriously boring argument going on, anyway on another matter!

Can anyone from Marcellin please confirm that Senior Coach Paul Dodd was asked to leave on Sunday after a 4th straight hundred point loss, and inturn he has resigned from the club effective immediately? Who is now coaching?

The board sat down with Doddsy sunday for a scheduled season review, Paul believed the he could not take the playing group any further and unselfishly stepped aside with the best interest of the playing group in mind.
