Who is Colin Sylvia circa 2014? Did we just recruit the MFC Scapegoat?
Is he a dominant forward/midfielder, a strong body who can smash through tackles, and who is also a scoring threat with beautiful long goals from the 50 metre arc? A decent mark as well. A player with an intimidation factor due not only to his strong body, but also his skill set.
Or do we get a good ordinary player, who sometimes turns it on, but far too sporadically? A downhill skier who doesn't put in the hard yards and inflicts more pain on the fans than on the opposition players. The player who embodies inconsitancy. The player MFC needed to lose in order to improve.
Do we have a player we are going to be singing the praises of at the end of the season, or will we be firing the finger at the delete button.
What is the impact of these factors going to be on Sylvia;
1) He will be playing in good side that is having a genuine tilt at September glory.
2) He has a no-nonsense coach who will be very clear and uncompromising about what Sylvia needs to be doing every second of his time on the field.
3) He is a fringe player sitting somewhere around 12-25 on our list in terms of depth, certainly nowhere near our top 5. He is pretty invisible in terms of profile.
My call is that he is going to take the opportunity to become a genuine player. Lyon will help him develop the consistency that has always been missing, and he will benefit from the clarity of Lyon's purpose-full game plan. A game plan where everyone is a role player and nobody is the saviour. Where commitment is not an option.
Anyway, I figure going into the pre-season Sylvia deserves to be discussed and get a little bit of scrutiny too. I hope they are improving his fitness base, and expect him to play significantly more in the midfield than in the forward line.
