Who is Colin Sylvia circa 2014? Did we just recruit the MFC Scapegoat?

Is he a dominant forward/midfielder, a strong body who can smash through tackles, and who is also a scoring threat with beautiful long goals from the 50 metre arc? A decent mark as well. A player with an intimidation factor due not only to his strong body, but also his skill set.

Or do we get a good ordinary player, who sometimes turns it on, but far too sporadically? A downhill skier who doesn't put in the hard yards and inflicts more pain on the fans than on the opposition players. The player who embodies inconsitancy. The player MFC needed to lose in order to improve.

Do we have a player we are going to be singing the praises of at the end of the season, or will we be firing the finger at the delete button.

What is the impact of these factors going to be on Sylvia;

1) He will be playing in good side that is having a genuine tilt at September glory.

2) He has a no-nonsense coach who will be very clear and uncompromising about what Sylvia needs to be doing every second of his time on the field.

3) He is a fringe player sitting somewhere around 12-25 on our list in terms of depth, certainly nowhere near our top 5. He is pretty invisible in terms of profile.

My call is that he is going to take the opportunity to become a genuine player. Lyon will help him develop the consistency that has always been missing, and he will benefit from the clarity of Lyon's purpose-full game plan. A game plan where everyone is a role player and nobody is the saviour. Where commitment is not an option.

Anyway, I figure going into the pre-season Sylvia deserves to be discussed and get a little bit of scrutiny too. I hope they are improving his fitness base, and expect him to play significantly more in the midfield than in the forward line.

Im expecting an article in the west sometime soon where sylvia states hes never trained as hard before and how he never understood the effort that was actually required at a top team..then to come out of the block full tilt

I expect Sylvia will take some time to settle in to a new club with new teammates and a new gameplan. He may be critisized early in the year, but I suspect that by season's end, he will be making a significant contribution to the attacking aspect of our midfield. Looking forward to seiing Freo attck more, and I think Sylvia will be a part of that change.

No scapegoat for me. If he is playing poorly then Ross will drop him.

Like Lach said deBoer is not in his league and cracks a game. Silvia once he understands the game plan will go just nicely.

I think he'll look good in purple

I reckon you'll look good in purple as well, Colin :D

Yep, except I think it will be an afl.com story. Not to mention how much he is loving Perth and the boys have been really welcoming!

But seriously, he is one that I am really looking forward to seeing how he goes. I was so negative towards D Pearce when we got him, but I was pleasantly surprised how well he went. (Just wish someone would tell him to stop peppering the goals and give it someone else!!!)

Yeah, like Pearce he is a maligned player with an unconvincing history, still languishing under the label of "potential", and mostly with the adjective of "unrealised" in front of it.

The thing that makes me optimistic with him is that there is little doubt that Melbourne has failed to develop talent, so unless he has simply come to Freo for the weather and the fish and chips we have a shot at getting that talent to get more air time. We are looking for more hurt factor in the forward half of the ground and he brings that.

All players who would attract the midfield defensive focus before Sylvia. Big contrast to his time at the D's. That will be dangerous for any opposition, and with the likes of Barlow and Crowley places our midfield around the standard that some of the great modern teams have had. A great mixture of blue collar work ethic and x-factor.

Good Post.

Good players also improve incrementally with real talent around them.
I am banking that will be the tale with Col Sylvia.
