Toast A Swift Return

Anyone else notice Swift's head smack the turf leading up to Hurn's final goal?
Looked pretty nasty. He must be desperate to stay in the team. Really encouraging display on Sunday. I've always been a fan.

Notice how Dwayne Russell was like "Logan....oh, amazing courage!" as Logan was backing back yet Swift's act in the marking contest was far more courageous than his and he bounced back up and set up the goal.

Courageous from both players I guess. I heard Russell is a Port Adelaide supporter (poor mug) so his hyperbole didn't surprise me.

Wasn't it Logans foot hitting him in the head?

Something about the way he twists and turns makes me think he is going to injure himself...

He has body parts going in different directions, it's awkward but can be creatively effective.

I must admit my heart was in my mouth when the Port boy went for the mark. Classic "leaving yourself wide open'. Can get Russell on plenty of other stuff but surely not this one.

Dwayne Russell..... Bulk hate.

Speaking of bulk, it perplexes me how people always say things like "just needs to bulk up a bit in the gym and he will be right" or "wait until he gets a few more kilos's on him" etc and yet they never do it.

I'm a gym rat.. so i know exactly what is involved in adding 5kgs of muscle and i don't see why more of our players just don't do it. It's not exactly hard.

Swift is a 3rd year player, it means he has been in the westcoast system for over 36 months, with a dietician, nutritionist and weights trainers at his disposal and still doesn't look to have put on any size whatsoever. Sheppard too. I don't get it. Stephen Hille from freo managed to do it successfully, watts too, but some players just refuse to add size to improve there all round phsyical game.

Look at how Kerr used to look. Bad example, he's been around for years, but still. Look at how hard he goes now. Sylvia, moloney... pretty much any player from geelong are good examples.

We have Gaff, Swift, Sheppard, Masten.. Shuey even.

I think in Swift's case its about not putting too much pressure on his knees. They are bringing him along slowly from a physical perspective. He is listed as 85kgs which isn't bad actually.

There's no need to be bulky anymore. Players like Kerr ran into injuries as they were holding too much weight. The new rules/laws restricting bumps and tackling, even marking contests means players no longer require strength. They need to be able to run all day. Besides talking about weight is meaningless. Cousins was 80kg his whole career. Gym junkies usually have a lot of fat on them.... Footy players need lean body mass which takes years to develop. Swift didn't look small out there, he's probably pretty close to his ideal playing weight.

I think Hill and Watts are bad examples. Hill (have you met him) is still a rake but that is not a real issue as an outside midfielder, but it does allow him to be tagged more easily as he doesn't win his own ball very often. Watts is nowhere near big enough to play as a key forward, he is currently running around as a flanker but he still doesn't tackle very hard or break many tackles.

Swifts arms aren't overly defined but he is strong in the lower body and able to keep his feet which is important for inside mids, unlike some of our other inside mids he has the capacity to burst away from stoppages which is important.

I think he has been given less of a chance than Masten, Ebert and others to have an extended run at AFL level, hopefully they don't drop him if he has a poor game.

I'm not sure if you meant that as it came out, but do you really think players refuse to put bulk on? Having trained at footy clubs, some blokes (like myself) would look at the weights and bulk up, so I was limited to 1-2 sessions per week.:D Other guys would do 3-5 weights sessions and not bulk up at all, but I can assure you no one refused to bulk up.:)

WC should fire their fitness and conditioning staff and hire you since you know what you are doing.

Anyone can put on 5kg of muscle living in a gym, however the cardio an AFL player requires means keeping that weight on is next to impossible.

On top of that Swift has had previous issues with knee injuries, thus any weight gain needs to be incremental and carefully managed otherwise all sorts of problems can develop, I'm sure he is on a very carefully tailored plan to suit his metabolism, body type and takes into account any issues such as previous long term injuries (eg his knee).

Its not just about smashing some protein and hitting the weights for these guys an AFL players workout is fairly unique compared to your average gym junkie.

Agreed with swannies, as if he would have just avoided the gym, he would have been forced in there. It's a lot to do with body types, moreso than it will ever be about desire.

He is pretty strong, and it's not like he hasn't added any weight he does look a little bigger than before. Seems alright.

He must have heavy bones. Still looks so scrawny. I wonder if its the kneck

It's his super tan, black is slimming didn't you know?

His overall size is fine, 85kg and 189cm is a good size (and he's definitely not 191 ive met him a couple of times and he's not taller than me).

Named on the wing this week too! i think his slide under Logan has endeared him to the coach's heart

That collision between Strijk and another bloke earnt Strijk a promotion last year, Swift's slide has earnt him a place in the starting 18 this year!

Moral of the story.. as soon as you get on the ground go and clean someone up!

People seem to think when i say put on some size that it's turn into Ronnie Coleman the bodybuilder or nothing. OBVIOUSLY they still need to keep there aerobic capacity and be able meet there burst or endurance needs as required. It's not just, "turn into a Josh Hunt on the stoids from geelong and become a meatball sub that you can't tackle". It's not so black and white as that. God.

You'll see this weekend against carltons bigger inside bodies. And what they do to us.

Scooter is a perfect example of someone adding on the right amount of bulk. And can you not tell in the way he plays now? Don't argues people, shrugs tackles and generally has more confidence. He's done well and has benefited from his extra weight more then anyone on our list.

Still had 20 touches today. A couple of shanks into the forward line but otherwise pretty good. Very composed and poised around stoppages and deadly by hand. Will be a great midfielder for us.
