What an excellent way to start the season -our selection panel can't even decide on the 2001 team leaders!

For the record (and for those who haven't been hanging out at the Eagles site

), we have co-captains (which I've never liked the idea of) Kemp and Cousins, and three vice-captains in Jakovich, Matera and Wirrapunda. What do you think?

Bloody hell, why didn't they just make the whole team captains. If they can't make a definite decision on that, it doesn't augur well. Eagle Fan, do you think it is because they didn't want to cause in fighting by someone getting their nose out of joint by being overlooked & maybe dropping their bundle?

I'm not overly impressed by having 5 of them.
There's been so much hype and build up over the selection of the Captain, it feels like abit of a let letdown. Don't get me wrong, all 5 are players I admire, I just don't agree with the 2 & 3 setup.

Think Sandie could be on to something.

Think you're right there Sandie.

They really were in a no win situation. Jako's got the experience and credentials, but supposedly not the full support of the team, Cous is young and enthusiastic, is not nearing the end of his career (touch wood), and has his teamates support, but doesn't have the experience of the others. Kemp is great, but is too old, Matera's still not a team player etc etc.... Thought maybe a Jako-Cous co-captain might be the go, but the clash betwen those two particular players would cause problems.... Anyway, you've gotta feel a little bit sorry for Jak, but it's great to see Wirra in a leadership role. Kind of insurance against a Jeff White situation?

I guess we'll just test them all out this season, and choose the best for next year -> when our real coach and players turn up....

lol, I'm with you on that one!

Cant believe it!! What a terrible way to start the year. 5 captains!!!
And a poor choice. The only way i ever saw it was Jakovich Captain Cousins Deputy. Thats it Jako deserves it and cousins would benefit getting experience in a leadership role before taking over. Kemp and Matera never entered my mind. Matera is too destructive and sets a bad example, Kemp is too quiet, he leads by example on the field, but off the field we never see him. Jako was perfect for the role. Dissapointment all round in the Jod camp.

Co-Captains i also think is stupid. There should only be one leader.

I can handle the fighting, its the affection i cant stand and i dont mind us talking just dont try to touch my hand.

Simple explanation for this choice of captains, they wanted to honour the teams great players -Kemp, roo, jako- and at the same time bring in youth. the result, 5 captains.

And by having 2 captains they have a 'bridge' between the young and old players.

"Don't be so humble - you are not that great. "

The Eagles should have bitten the bullet and selected Cousins. Jakovich would have been a worthy captain, but if you're going to create a team, then pick someone young and let him work his way into the job in the hope that he will inspire and lead the players that are his age and younger.

By naming Cousins AND Kemp, what you are saying is, "Cousins, we think you're good enough to be captain, but not just yet so we'll give you an older player to help guide you along". If they were grooming Cousins for the job long term, then it would have been better to make Kemp captain with Cousins as his vice-captain and obvious successor.

If you watch the great captains from the other clubs (and to my mind, the best ones at the moment are Carey, Hird, and Voss), when you see their teams in trouble, they will try and take control of the game and inspire their teammates. Two captains can do that. But what they also do is whenever a quarter ends, they will get the players together and addres them as they head towards their huddles (or the dressing room). You can't do that with two captains.

Just one comment from a Hawk fan.

It doesn't sound like a Ken Judge Idea at all.
Do you think he was overruled on this one.

One captain and (up to 5) a few deputies sounds good to me.

Hey West Aussies And Eagles dudes!! I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy Cuzzy is co captain!! Way to Go Benny Boy!! Who cares if we have 5 captains - what matters is the quality of the captaincy - and as we are all aware it is of extremely high unsurpassable quality - got it??
2001 - what a year to look forward to!!

Onya Benny!!

I understand that Cuz was not comfortable with being sole captain at 22 and the choice was then on for co-captain. Cuz took advice from Vossy who has said he was too young to do it alone when named co-captain at the Lions at the same age (22) No doubt Cuz will be captain alone in a year or two and Wirra vill be vice captain. Both are being groomed by older and well respected veterans in Kempy and Roo. I feel sorry for Jako, but there have been many greats that never made captain.

ps where's my $50

Dees, I don't think Ken Judge made the decision solo. They took into consideration the boards view and also the various opinion polls on the clubs website.

The same sort of thing happened last season with the Lions, Voss and Lynch as Co-captains, and Leppitsch and Chris Scott as co-vice captains.

We now only have Vossy as captain, but we added Darryl White and Nigel Lappin to the vice captains list.

It is a bit of a joke. What is wrong with one captain, and maybe 2 vices (at the most)?

Jako will still be a terrific leader to the team, even if he's not officially as the captain. He'll still be reving the team up and pumping himself up when he gets a goal!

Yes, but Ken Judge would have to have the final say. He would have to agree with the decision.

I can't believe it. You and WA call yourself Eagles Fans. Eagles fans would never say this season doesn't count. You can't take the fact that the Eagles won't be premiership contenders, that we don't matter thois year. 1 Bad season and you start throwing blame left, right and center. How are the Eagles going to get better if there own supporters are giving up on them this season. If anything this season counts the most. It is the season where we see which of our youth will in a couple of seasons make up our team. Ken comes here to a team that has nothing to do but fall and then gets the blame. And cause he won't win a premiership in his second season as coach then he will get dropped. I would love to have Woosha as coach, but not yet and I don't think next year either. This just really dissapoints me that two supposed fans could say such a thing.

This whole thing smacks of management by consensus, which produces nothing but mediocrity every time. Seems like they don't have anyone with the backbone to make a decision and see it through.
