It would be nice if you don't try to enforce your standards on other people regarding playing poker machines and on the millions who play them responsibly within budget and means.

My advice - don't go to a club that has them or support them if you don't like them and when you do manage to get them banned be prepared to both put your hand in your pocket to pay extra or be prepared to volunteer and lend a hand for whatever shortfall may occur.
The same could be said of heroin. Plenty do it without having their lives fall apart, so why screw their lives by imposing other people's standards on them. Just because some people cannot say no.

Really, they should offer a shot with each big win on the pokies.

So.. ban all gambing, ban all sugary drinks, all fast food, all fatty food, ban alcohol, ban cigarettes...?

It is unfortunate but neccessary to protect people against themselves.
We have road rules, seat belts, excise on cigarettes, excise of alcohol, banking regulations, investment regulations, drug laws, gun laws etc etc.
The word is control not ban.
Control of gambling and unhealthy food products is just catching up.

What's wrong with that?
What's wrong in trying to make everybody is healthy as possible.
Because money is what makes the world go around and the AFL aren’t exactly rolling in it anymore.
Also if you take away even say 10-20% of sponsorship it diminishes the value of all sponsors/advertisers so you’ll see further drops. Simple supply and demand.

say what - heroin now !!

please dial down the hysteria, if only for your own good

Yes, that is why we have road rules, seat belts, excise on cigarettes, excise of alcohol, banking regulations, investment regulations, drug laws, gun laws etc etc.
Control means less money wasted crime, car repairs, death, hospitals, medical procedures, social programs, the dole etc etc.

Which has got nothing to do with the AFL/other sports and the money they need to run the sport let alone all of the clubs that rely on them.
I’ll take my local area for an example. The only two proper golf clubs are totally reliant on pokies money, the cricket leagues major sponsor is from a pokies club, and nearly every cricket club would be sponsored from a venue with pokies, the two Aussie rules league’s and pretty much every club would get major sponsors that are from pokies money. Soccer, Darts leagues, Bowling leagues, racing and Harness etc all receive money from them.
I presume you live in WA so may not realise that the majority of venues who actually make money in country areas have them in it. You don’t go killing grass root sport for the sake of some sort of moral high ground that actually achieves nothing. It’s a political issue that doesn’t need to be fought by the sport.

"Former NSW Labor Leader M. Davy has warned that Govt. issued Gambling Cards for poker machines would devestate pubs & clubs fighting for survival..."

Shooters Party R. Borsak said "The economic impact on NRL & AFL sporting clubs...will be devestating".

The LNP govt., however, is assured of passing its anti-pokie legislation- it has already secured majority support in the NSW Upper House.
The NRL & GR RL Clubs with pokies in NSW will be far more financially damaged than Swans, GWS, & GR AF clubs in NSW.
Neither SFC nor GWS own, or receive, pokie funding. GWS, from 2010, said it would not support funding from owning pokies, as the WS are a lower socio-economic area.

Interesting. And a major boost for AF vis-a-vis RL in NSW, unless NRL & GR clubs slash their player/coaches/admin. etc. costs? Or will they cut GR funding- which will boost GR AF?

The Age 29.10.18
Only 7 clubs in the AFL have pokies now- HFC, EFC, Carlton, RFC, & StK FC; & Brisbane & Port. R. Goyder has said it is AFL preference that all AFL Clubs divest themselves of this vlie revenue.

2. The Australian B. Read 2.4.20

Read said, re the possible existential threat to some NRL clubs

"...Greenberg's protestations...of all the NRL clubs in danger due to covid-19, he harbours greatest concerns for those who have relied on the largesse of poker machines...".

On 24.3.20, Read wrote in The Australian that "...only 3 of the Sydney (NRL) Clubs don't rely on poker machine money...".

3. A whistleblower, a former Clubs NSW employee, has warned that organised crime is using pokie dens to launder their illegally obtained moneys- a "massive & alarming" problem.

Another very important reason to ban them (except a limited no. in 1 CBD casino only, only allowing machines to accept one 5 cent coin per spin. The pokie addicts won't lose as much).

exactly as you say they now rely on it. Why pull tens of millions of dollars out of the game when it achieves absolutely nothing for society. Do you expect them to then tell every grassroots comp around the country to do the same to go along with this virtue signalling and destroy local football?
where do you draw the line? Climate change, fatty foods, Alcohol etc? all as big/bigger issues.

Which means it was a poor decision to go that way.

Why pull tens of millions of dollars out of the game

In grassroots ?

when it achieves absolutely nothing for society.

Come on.

Do you expect them to then tell every grassroots comp around the country to do the same to go along with this virtue signalling and destroy local football?

Come on. definitely not around the country.

where do you draw the line? Climate change, fatty foods, Alcohol etc? all as big/bigger issues.

Sport should be responsible. It should promote moderation and healthy lifestyles.

I didn't use quotation marks. It reflects his public views, as AFL Commission Chairman.

Why pull tens of millions of dollars out of the game when it achieves absolutely nothing[False!] for society. Do you expect them to then tell every grassroots comp around the country to do the same to go along with this virtue signalling and destroy local football?
I linked, in my post#3301 above, some of the misery & disgusting damage caused by poker machines, the losses in Aust. of $4.7b etc. What do you think of those issues?

I suggest you do some basic research- you will quickly learn about the misery & financial losses caused to pokie gambler addicts, their families etc. by their pokie addictions. It has been estimated that 40% of total pokie losses are to pokie addicts.

Are you aware that NSW, with 95,000 non-casino machines, is easily "the non-casino pokie capital of the world"?
And that the majority of pokie profits go from the poorer areas in NSW (&, like Vic., the machines are HIGHLY concentrated in lower socio-economic areas) to, usually, owners of companies living in much more wealthy areas?

Also, I assume you don't approve of pokie dens being used widely by organised crime to launder their illegal, filthy drug monies etc. See my above post #3359.

Do you expect them to then tell every grassroots comp around the country to do the same to go along with this virtue signalling and destroy local football?

The grossly overpaid, incompetent AFL executives regularly indulge in virtue signalling- why should they hesitate at opposing the genuine evil of poker machine addiction/massive losses for the addicts/domestic violence/family breakups etc.

Also, it won't destroy "local football" anywhere in Aust. WA doesn't have pokies in communities- how is GR AF going there?

In fact, if pokie dens were abolished/ greatly diminished by the pre-loaded, ID-necessary, Gambling Card new legislation, it is possible, or likely, the NRL & GR RL would be the big, net losers in NSW- since RL is FAR more dependent on pokie revenues (cf the AFL & GR AF in NSW).
This Gambling Card law will likely cause a snowball effect- with QLD NRL clubs to follow some time in the future.

2. "...the cashless card would enable the government to instantly know who is gambling at poker machines, & how much they're spending".

This govt. knowledge would greatly assist in hindering/eliminating the widespread money laundering by criminals, who use poker machines to clean their filthy drug cash monies.

Read Goyder's comments here- he is against poker machines, & has been publicly quoted (as Commission Chairman) that he "hates them" (google it, if you have doubts, re his "hate" comments).

Do you think it is good for Aust. society that the per capita losses are so high- & usually by those most unable to afford these losses, causing such misery?

A bloke who hates pokies but heads a multinational that is one of the top evaders of billions of $ of tax and no doubt his company is part of some cartel that sets fuel and gas prices ripping off people left right and center and no doubt the ones that can least afford it.

good for him, maybe he can employ the thousands that lose their jobs when all the clubs go under

lets get rid of pokies!, they must be pretty bad some hysterical posters have them as bad with heroin.

if you don't like them don't play them, it's very simple, don't go near them or support a club that has them, i don't care, but don't tell me what i can and cant do with my money.

The irony is clubs sell alcohol, at just a guess but 100 time worse than pokies for violence, domestic violence, abuse, health problems etc etc etc

But looks like the SJW set is getting the old jimmies off on pokies, one thing at a time they say, and go and get stuffed to the millions of Australians who play them within means and budget.

There is a huge gulf between a premise that facilitates the sale of alcohol or the playing of pokies as an adjunct and the large establishments that exist purely for the sale of alcohol or the promotion of gaming.

violence, domestic violence, abuse, health problems etc etc etc

Professional people are always in the spotlight. Football players are educated on many health and social matters.
For the contact sports and the constant high pressure produces surprising few unfortunate cases.
The reality is, problems exist in the general public that are so common that they don't receive the attention that they deserve.

Worth mentioning that Goyder was chair of Wesfarmers when they bought Coles, whose major competitor Woolies made shitloads of money from pokies venues.

You would be lucky to find one percent of these venues who don’t provide other entertainment, aren’t also sport clubs, restaurants etc.

1. In the biggest change in NSW GR RL in c. 100 years, the Country Rugby League (CRL) has been "retired"- &, in 2019, combined with the NSWRL.

Many RL experts (inc. P. Rothfield, P. Gould etc.) have been stating, for at least 10 years, that "RL is dying in the bush", or words to that effect.

The combined organisation is still called the NSWRL (formerly in charge of GR comps. in Greater Sydney only). From 2021, jnr & snr GR RL, for all of NSW, will be divided into 6 Zones & associated Regions (formerly c. 16 Groups).

The amalgamation of the 16 Groups is designed to improve jnr & snr GR "recruitment & retention" (probably motivated by the significant, long term decline in GR male contact RL).

The NSWRL states (see below link) it will shorten travel times for many GR jnr country RL teams.
(How? I assumed contraction of the Groups, into 6 Divisions, would have the opposite effect. GR snr country teams will have longer, average, travel times -because much fewer country snr. GR teams exist now, cf previous decades).

The semi-pro R. Massey Cup (ie RM is Grade below NSW Canterbury Cup, basicly NRL Reserves) previously only covered Sydney metro- but, from 2021, will now cover the whole State, with teams from Newcastle, Hunter, & Wollongong regions...& much increased travel times!

(Similar to the one-off 2020 Presidents Cup. Because there were not enough snr GR RL clubs in Sydney willing to play a covid-shortened season in 2020- players not being paid in 2020, so players pulled the pin!
To provide a snr GR comp. for the teams/players that wanted to play in 2020, teams entered from Sydney, Newcastle, Hunter, & Wollongong. Newcastle & W'gong comps. cancelled 2020).

If travel times, on average, increase (& NSW is a large state), it would be expected this would be detrimental to RL retention & recruitment: unless the idea is, sensibly, based on having more teams (bigger area) playing, more often, against teams of a similar standard. In body contact sports, getting a lot of thrashings is a well known major factor why teams lose players, or fold.

Will these changes stabilise/reverse the long term GR male contact trend of a "...mass exodus of junior & bush players..." in NSW (& ACT & Qld.) ?

2. Western Advocate A. Proszenko 19.6.17

"Blueprint To Save Bush Rugby League"

CRL Oficial B. Lowrie said

"We're excited by it, we believe it's a blueprint for OTHER REGIONS (my emphasis) in the future".

This new 6 Zone concept (in point 1, above) may have been based on the successful introduction by Penrith Panthers to directly "affiliate" with new Penrith-branded GR teams in the Central West. Panthers set up Academies (Bathurst, Dubbo, Forbes) & Penrith-branded pathways there, increasing RL tribalism & GR enthusiasm, & playing some NRL games there.

(AFL HQ: re GR AF in Tasmania, & its own 19th team, pay attention to Penrith's great success!
Ditto with GWS, & the big rise in NSW Drafted players from 2012, cf the previous NSW Draft drought from 2000!
Ditto GCFC...ditto Brisbane...ditto Sydney 1982).

EDIT:

June 2017
"Staying at home (Central West) would be a huge boost for many a junior
A further benefit would be a promising player from the region (CW) would not have to pack up & move to Sydney"
