Why are clubs/fans/media interested in Fri night, in Anzac Day ... there are premium slots.
They are, but also for Vic clubs, they're also FTA slots. When you don't get on FTA automatically, you fight to get the slots that will get you there as often as possible. (and if you're going to push for them anyway, you're obviously going to try for the best ones you can arrange).

The Lions outdrew the broncos for six years and the Sydney Swans are clearly the biggest team around in Sydney.
If you really want to know who's got where then look at sponsorships.
And this all of a sudden equates to rl states adopting footy as the number one code. That is far reaching to justify a 3rd syd team.

The attendances of the G.C. follow it's onfield performance. The G.C. are still attracting rl level crowds.
The GWS are steadily moving up the attendance and membership ladder.
Yes, attendances aren't flash by AFL standards but good by rl standards and thus also good in N.Z.
AFL foray into NZ was a disaster with city choosing to dump concept after a few additions. Any other interpretation is fantasy.

Why do I have to tune into 7mate to see all but a quarter of my teams matches here in Sydney?

So the AFL attracted over 12,000 on three consecutive years at Wellington, crowds that the NRL are quite comfortable with.

Population of Wellington is 212,700. AFL attracted between 5% to 10% of the nominal popualation.
The stadium and the weather are widely disliked and 12k is an average crowd.
And look who's playing -St Kilda.

How does afl go in Hurstville?

"This is one reason the St George Club has been so successful. Their general success followed the formation of a fully functioning junior association in their area in 1955, junior clubs like Cronulla, Bangor, Heathcote, Penshurst, Peakhurst, Miranda, Como-Janalli, Ramsgate, Sutherland, Boystown and Hurstville Diamonds formed the core of a nursery for the senior club in particular as well as other local clubs who benefited from the Association."

"St. George AFC had one of it's most successful season in it's 91 year history with 5 out of 6 teams making finals, 4 of those teams making their Grand Finals, and 3 of them winning premierships in season 2019.

Our Masters team went through the season undefeated and won their second Premiership in 2 years, defeating Western Suburbs in a tight game.

Our Premier Division Reserves team finished 5th after the home and away season, but then hit a red hot vein of form in September, taking out the Grand Final over Pennant Hills.

Our Women's team playing in Div 3 finished 5th at the end of home and away before storming in to the Grand Final with 2 big wins. The Grand Final was a tenses affair vs Parramatta, and after a strong first quarter and despite being challenged numerous times by the Goannnas, our girls pulled ahead for an amazing Grand Final win in their first seeason."

Interest declined every year. Fact it was one off fixture didn't bump crowds either. Numbers probably inflated if gws & China game anything to go by.

Pretty sure you've posted some numbers on this very thread that doesn't mean the bulk of the nsw/qld fan base are invested in footy does it.
If you look at various facts and figures like participation, attendances, sponsorships etc then in Queensland if you take all the criteria then
four codes are quite bunched.
The last time there were official census figures involving sport (quite some time ago) it was quite clear in NSW. The outstanding code w.r.t.participation was soccer. Soccer owns participation in NSW. At least a third the way done came rugby league. There was a drop to rugby union and Australian football was close to rugby union. I would say that soccer has had probably an indexed rise in participation. Rugby league is about the same with women replacing the loss of men's participation. Australian (Rules) Football in NSW is booming huge rises in men's and women's participation jumping way in front of rugby union which is suffering.

Those participation number won't see an invested fan base of any reasonable number for at least a generation. It's at least a generation away before the suggestion of a 3rd syd team, the public support is just not there yet.

Why do I have to tune into 7mate to see all but a quarter of my teams matches here in Sydney?
Same reason people in Perth frequently have to tune into 7mate for WA team matches I'm guessing.

What do you think that reason is?
