A thread of level headed reason

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Sad thing for me (and probably many others) is as I got older and my team became the shittest in known history I invested more emotionally.

So Im nowhere near level headed when it comes to working this team out and understanding where its headed.

Have we improved? Yes of course to some degree, made more unclear by teams around us getting worse.

If we beat Essendon finally this Saturday are we getting better or they just at their rock bottom?

If we do win, and back it up against Carlton, put a shift in against Brisbane, then beat Richmond, then we can say maybe.

Not sure Cool Kangas is getting the reassuring hug sought after.

I would assume we're no good until proven otherwise by results.

Good teams don't win every week. Bad teams certainly don't.

I'm as upset as anyone about what we saw Sunday evening, moreso because there were more avenues to victory than usual. For instance, when we play a team like the Bulldogs, everything has to go right a lot more than against the Eagles for us to win. That said, it's still our 23 trying to win vs 23 others trying to stop that.

You can look at the long flight, the hot weather, the early injury to Logue, WCE unusually accurate shot-taking at low % goals, and keep on keeping on when it comes to explanations or excuses as to why we didn't get it done, but that's all just noise. It was a hard-fought game of footy and we came up short. It happens. When you look at the list of players that had good-to-great games, and those that has average-to-poor games, the good news is that there's enough growth in those that were poor that you can see the future looking better. FoS is in season 2, Dovaston just played game 2, Duursma looked good early then went missing (along with half the team); this is where you can see things getting better over a longer period of time.

I wasn't too high after Round 1, and I'm not too low after Round 2. I'll make a more informed assessment about how I feel about season 2026 at the end of Round 6.

And this is the issue. It doesn’t appear that way at all.
Fans of the better teams would find this too. No teams are switched on all the time. It's not a realistic expectation. Of course, it'd be better if our lapses were only short and were fixable.

This actually applies to many of the gripes that posters have about fitness staff / injuries, recruiting, etc. Any time something goes wrong, we must be worst at that area, without considering that other clubs have this too. For example, if a good player gets past our pick, and the pick of every other team, we must have the worst recruiting team.

Its called entitlement.

We've been crap for a while.......when is it 'my turn' to see success.

Results will be all over the place this year, but we live in an age of immediate gratification.

WTAF? Immediate gratification? Are you serious? We’ve been shithouse for over 6 years. I think as a supporter base we’re ENTITLED to see some wins.

Well I woke up the day after the WC disappointing loss feeling more confident of our chances v * because of the loss.

The first and fourth quarters we dug in and showed fight. Sadly the two quarters between left us too much to do to rectify things.

Had we won I’d have been half expecting what we saw in Perth to play out at Marvel with the *Bummers in the media spotlight. A real “here we go again” night off a 2-0 start.

I expect now we’ll definitely be up and about applying maximum pressure and running in waves as we can do at our best. We’ve been brought back down to Earth with a thud.

No passengers. Maximum effort, ala X.

Over to you boys!
Fully agree.

While disappointed by the loss, I found it easier than normal to digest. West coke played to the best of their ability and had a number of weekly non-replicable events go their way. In addition to our positional changes, young player inconsistencies, the hot weather and a mental letdown after setting ourselves for port (getting ahead of ourselves), I feel confident we can fix many of the issues. Nothing I write matters if we don’t beat * and Carlton.

According to Wheelo rating these were the four highest rated players for the Weagles - Murdoch(17.1, 6.8,) Yeo (17, 13,) Duff-Tyler (16.8, 5.6,) and Duursma (16.3, 6.3.)

The bolded were their game ratings, the other number was the predicted rating. So Yeo was considerable better than expected. The three guys playing their second senior game .... their rating compared to their expected rating is thru the roof.

HowTF did that happen? Do you reckon it will happen again, ever?

BTW these ratings are good but not necessarily perfect. They rated Reid at 5.6 ie the 13th worst player on the ground.

Sorry for being negative but I feel typical north season vibes now after the weekend. * will smash us ☹️

You’re either a very ordinary troll or not all there. I’m going with the latter. :stern look

I can’t.

I’m in the seat beside you wondering why the f*** I bother year in year to expect more.

I feel like a blend of apathy and disillusionment has gotten me.

I enjoyed the win last week. But I’m numb to yesterday. It didn’t hurt I wasn’t particularly angry. It just is. Losing is part of our make up now.

The losses are killing my passion and tbh if there isn’t some sort of consistent progression then I will become a member who doesn’t go to games.
+1

I’m actually so upset. Year on year the same bloody hope. Year on year the same bloody disappointment. Can I please get some reasonable, level-headed posters on here - please no pisstakes - just honest assessment and responses - with some kind of reassurance that we are in fact improving? (Or should I just forget about footy?) I can’t take the heartbreak anymore.

It is possible to just walk away, and it shouldn't be judged when it gets to the point that the current custodians of an institution you once revered have turned into something that doesn't remotely resemble the one you remember. I've cancelled my Kayo, cancelled my auto rollover Nth membership, and as I am from a Carlton family, they already bought tickets to the good friday game & I'm obliged to go so i have to wait until then, but after that I'm free of this sh*t, and I can't wait.

It's funny, I used to pee my pants with laughter at membership microwaving Tigs supporters who would go on a "I'm finally farkin done with this mob...nup serious this time I'm really done!" rant every few months, but Jesus do I get it now. You have a matrix moment and something snaps and you look at things differently. I just have nothing but anger towards this self absorbed pack of paycheque thieves and grifters the way you would have anger towards some dodgy Irish gypsy builders who have just bilked you out of hundreds of dollars for a service they have no plans to deliver.

So yeh, just to let you know you can walk away and there are other hobbies and fields of endeavour out there to fill your weekends.

Entitlement??? if you have Kayo, go open up a tab RIGHT now and bring up Sunday's game, and fast forward halfway through to the footage of the teams in the rooms at half time, look at the Eagles who just played a half in the same heat as our mob- they're switched on, engaged, excited for the second half, look like they are buzzing on a six pack of red bull. Then look at us- all cues snugly placed in the rack, looking like they absolutely dreading having to scrape their lazy arses off the chairs and phone in another hour of footy, just counting the minutes until they can get back to Melbourne and their real passion- clowning around to produce to social media content.

So you have players with attitudes like that on 6 figure+ incomes, a president that runs the joint like her own personal NGO, and a coach who, in a pallid attempt to assuage his own feelings of guilt about hurting people with some of his insensitive behaviour 10 years ago, is running the joint like a *****ng YMCA.

And all these people just smugly and blithely expect us to subsidise their ego trips?! that's entitlement.

What makes you so 'entitled'? Putting up with being crap? Putting up with it is a choice. Nobody is entitled to anything.
We pay memberships, we attend games, we support our club via loyalty and donation. We are ‘entitled’ to see effort, drive and a desire in the players to improve - which in turn would lead to seeing more success.

This year we will be better than last year. Last year we were better than the year before. Last week was a set back. There will be more in the future. That is the nature of footy. But we are definitely improving

And we will overreact to both the positives and the negatives. Every win will be heralded as finally turning the corner, and every loss will be conclusive proof we're irredeemable. Last week was a shit loss, and yes, we'll have a few more. We'll also have some wins against the odds.

KB with his usual shit take...

Instant gratification lol

21/132 and we are chasing a quick fix. FMD.

The next two matches are huge. Win both and we have probably improved. Lose both and it's a disaster. Win one, lose one then we are probably not any better than last year. Team selection will tell us a lot I think. For what it is worth, I think we will win both.
