Ghee TBD maybe you're right. Looks like this is having a bigger effect than I thought on his career. Maybe it might be goodbye and goodnight for milo.

He'll still have his following in the dark corners of the Internet but yeah, his credibility in the mainstream has taken a big hit.

Retail and hospitality among the lowest paid workers, now get no reward for missing out on family time, just so others can going shopping & out for eats.
Possibly more casual jobs created, but again, little reward for missing family time for many.

Might be good for business, but as Skoob says parents who have been sacrificing hours with their children to earn a bit more money will now be doing so for nothing.
And on top of that, those who work in those industries will be finding it harder to make ends meet so on their weekends off they won't have the money to spend anyway.

It's not a big pay cut. They still get bonus rates.

Full and part-time retail and pharmacy workers employed under industrial awards will have their Sunday penalty rates reduced from 200 per cent to 150 per cent of the weekday pay rate.

Casuals will be have their Sunday partly reduced from 200 per cent to 175 per cent of the weekday rate.

In hospitality, the penalty rate for full and part-time workers will be reduced from 175 per cent to 150 per cent. The Sunday rate for casuals will remain at 175 per cent.

Public holiday penalty rates for many workers will be reduced from 250 per cent to 225 per cent.

Hmmm, wasn't fully aware of the new rates. I wonder then, if it will create any more jobs or even the less likely, encourage closed businesses to open. Wait and see, like most things, time will tell, but in either scenario, the only winner looks to be the businesses already trading on Sundays.

I struggle to get worked up about it when so many hospitality workers prefer to work those days anyway.

I'd hate to see it happen for nurses, paramedics, fireys etc where those days are part of the job whether you like it or not though. If you are a shift/weekend worker by necessity of the job, you do pay a social, lifestyle and family opportunity cost.

Those figures will not save my ears from burning the minute my wife finds out about it.

Those rate decreases don't go towards hiring more staff, though, they just go to profits in the pockets of the business usually.
That's the reality, it's basically just a concession for business owners. Won't have any other noticeable benefit.

I'm happy not to have to work weekends anymore as it does really mess up with your social life and I'm happy to see penalty rates stay as high as possible.

Parents have been sacrificing time with their kids for years and years.....My dad worked weekends, my grandfather would ride his push bike hundreds of miles up to Mildura just to get work ....would be away for weeks at a time. That's what parents are supposed to do, work for their families when and how they can get it.

The workers are still getting bonus time, just not as much. Perhaps they could work an extra hour or two?

Businesses have to be looked after too, or there is no work for the workers.

This is an official dog whistle to those cafe, small business and franchise operators who are already rorting young, part time and casual workers through systematic underpayment and abuse of labour laws, that their conduct is somehow appropriate. The Fair Work Commision is the bosses court and it has done the bosses bidding by cutting the wages of the most vulnerable workers in the Australian economy. Australia was once the land of the 'fair go' but it is fast becoming the land of the working poor. Locked out of housing, no job security, subject to exploitation ... who would want to be a young person starting out in the world today?

I'm sorry but if you're a parent who works a shit retail or hospitality to job maybe it's time to change careers. There are plenty of subsidies and incentives for mature age persons to get qualifications so they don't have to be working in these fields.

When I was working a menial weekend job I received no penalty rates, was working stupid hours and only got over time between 12am and 6am or if my shift went for more than 10 hours. I think it's a bit of a cop out all those up in arms about they won't be able to make ends meet. Sure it might be a little tougher but I managed to study full time, have some sort of social life and live out of home on really dirt pay. (17.50 an hour).

The argument they won't find people who are willing to work is BS as well. There's always people willing to work and those are the ones that deserve those shifts. Talk about entitled, this change hasn't come soon enough IMO.

But why do they prefer it?
Because it pays better than Mondays, or because their Mondays are full with study or other work? Some might like working the weekend and having their days off while everyone else is at work and everything is open, but I'd suggest they're the minority and more are just okay with it or make the most of it because they don't have much alternative. I reckon those who prefer it, aren't family people, and most unlikely to be parents, especially of school age kids.

Me, it's not that hard if you're willing to work for it.

The opportunities are there if you can be bothered to go out and get them. My generation has the most over entitled attitude it makes me ill hearing the crap they go on with.

Those small business & franchise operators work damn hard I'm glad they're finally getting a break. I know two cafes in coorparoo and woolangabba who will now be able to afford to open on a Sunday. That's between 6-10 people who now will get another shift a week.

I didn't realise life was so simple. Of course, just change jobs. It was there, staring us in the face the whole time, although I don't know how we missed it when Joe Hockey and now Michael Sukkar revealed a similar solution to housing affordability; "Just get a high paying job".:straining:

And of course businesses will find workers. No-one is disputing that. "Happy to work", or desperate to work? It's a buyers' market in case you haven't noticed, and that is another reason this stinks, because there is no recourse for those in these jobs to improve their pay. Don't like it? We'll just replace you. Entitled? For expecting decent pay for shitty hours? Indeed, the whinging bastards. They should turn up for nothing and be grateful for the free air conditioning for the weekend, lucky campaigners.

So if it helps to make businesses more profitable and cafes, small shops, etc. don't close it must be good for workers as well.
I must be missing the spate of business closures due to penalty rates. Small business closures are pretty steady year on year and rarely is it due to a fringe thing like extra pay on a weekend.

Yes just change jobs. It's easier now then ever to get more qualifications while continuing to work your current job. Gaining an education has never been more flexible & easy and if you have no qualifications it's even easier and cheaper!!

When I was looking at gaining a trade qualification after I'd completed my degree I had a look at tafe to do a cert 2 to make myself a more attractive apprentice. Because I had finished a degree I wasn't eligible for any subsidies so the cert 2 would have cost me over $4500 to complete. If I had no qualifications? Around $400.

Now that is a real rort imo. However I understand why that policy is in place.

If you're an adult with a family with no qualifications boohooing your penalty rates have been cut and working a menial retail or hospitality sector job well I show absolutely no empathy for you. We all have and still have opportunities to further our careers regardless of age.

And you reckon the poor strugglers are entitled. Right.
Try running a household and family on a shoestring and finding those "opportunities", let alone employment if you're a 40-60 year old mum.
Silly comments.

Don't spin my words Skoob. I said my generation was entitled which is current mid 20 year olds.

I'm obviously not the only person who shares these sentiments. We all have the same opportunities in life.

Also describing my opinion as silly is uncalled for. Attack my argument not the person behind it, it only makes for thread to turn into disaster which makes for tiresome reading for everyone.

Yeah this is a crappy decision and I don't think it will create a single new job, or provide any long term benefit to many 'small businesses'.

Businesses will trade on weekends if it is profitable to do so.
Businesses will be profitable on weekends not because they save 12.5% of their wage budget on those days but because they have enough customers to make it profitable to open.
Whether they will have enough customers will be determined by whether their potential customers have enough disposable income.
You simply can't make small businesses more profitable by sucking money out of their likely customers pockets.
The big winners from this will be big retail, but that will be funnelled to their shareholders and not back into the wider community.

The other thing of course is that Sunday (or Saturday depending on your religion) is the Sabbath.
God told us not to work.
Those who work on the Sabbath are literally damning their immortal souls so that we can have coffee and cake after walking the dog.
I for one think that double time and a half is fair enough if they will ultimately have to burn in the fires of hell for all eternity.
